The Battle of L.A. will take place on Saturday, Aug. 14 at 10 p.m. ET with the Los Angeles Rams and Los Angeles Chargers kicking of the preseason against each other in their shared home of SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, CA.
It’s always tricky to predict who will start or get reps in the preseason but in the case of both the Chargers and Rams, their respective head coaches have already made it known who won’t be playing on Saturday.
Rams starting quarterback Matthew Stafford is not taking a single snap during the preseason, zero chance of it according to head coach Sean McVay. Backup John Wolford is also a scratch from preseason action after having an appendectomy last week. This means Bryce Perkins and Devlin Hodges will suit up for the Rams and have a chance to put stuff on film.
Similar situation to their Charger counterparts with Chase Daniel being named Saturday’s starter after franchise QB Justin Herbert was effectively ruled out of all of preseason action. With the veteran Daniel being slated as the LAC backup, don’t expect to see much of him as Easton Stick and K.J. Costello will get a bulk of the reps.
With Cam Akers already done for the season with a torn Achilles, Darrell Henderson has assumed the leadership mantle in the running back room according to Sean McVay. Because of this, don’t expect to see much if anything from him on Saturday as Jake Funk, Xavier Jones, and Raymond Calais will all get work and battle for a roster slot.
On the Chargers side, Austin Ekeler is one of the handful of critical players head coach Brandon Staley has ruled out for the entire preseason. This is set up for Justin Jackson Joshua Kelley, Larry Rountree, and others to get a bulk of the carries.
The Rams will most likely take it easy when it comes to the likes of Robert Woods, Cooper Kupp, Desean Jackson, and Van Jefferson. Expect to see rookie Tutu Atwell get some burn in his first taste of preseason action.
On the Charger side, Keenan Allen is one of a handful of guys ruled out for the preseason, and Mike Williams is dealing with a hip flexor according to Staley. Jaylen Guyton and Josh Palmer will most likely get in on the action on Saturday.
Don’t anticipate much if any of Tyler Higbee on Saturday for the Rams. This opens the door for rookie Jacob Harris to get some action after impressing in camp. For the Chargers, Jared Cook is part of the group that will not play during the preseason, so you’ll see the likes of Tre McKitty and Donald Parham on the field.
