The Pittsburgh Steelers and Detroit Lions meet in Week 2 of the preseason with both teams looking to continue making decisions on the edges of their rosters. The Steelers are unlikely to make major changes from last year’s group, while the Lions hope to make progress in Year 1 under Dan Campbell.
Quarterbacks
Jared Goff will play in this game, but probably won’t get more work than his Week 1 start. The Lions expect Goff to be their starter and are unlikely to push him too much. The Steelers plan to give Ben Roethlisberger a little work in this game, but expect more of Dwayne Haskins and Mason Rudolph as the competition for the backup job heats up.
Running Backs
D’Andre Swift is questionable to play and the Lions would be smart to hold the running back out given his injury history. For the Steelers, first-round pick Najee Harris should get a little more run but Anthony McFarland and Jaylen Samuels will still command a majority of the snaps.
Wide Receivers
Chase Claypool will not play after a scare in practice. Don’t expect the Steelers to push Diontae Johnson and JuJu Smith-Schuster much either. The Lions will likely hold out Breshad Perriman, who is questionable. Amon-ra St. Brown and Tyrell Williams should get decent snaps.
Tight Ends
T.J. Hockensen is listed as questionable, so don’t be surprised if he’s held out of this game. The Lions are low on quality offensive weapons at the moment and losing Hockensen would be damaging. The Steelers will give Eric Ebron and Pat Freiermuth snaps, but expect the latter to see more work in this one.
