The United States started off historically slow at the Tokyo Olympics, failing to win a medal on Day 1 of the Summer Games for the first time since 1972. With gymnastics and swimming getting underway later than previous Olympics, it was only a matter of time before the Americans got on the medal board.
Here’s how Team USA has fared in Tokyo in terms of hardware. This is through 12:50 p.m. ET on Monday, August 2.

Team USA medal notes
July 24/25 — Chase Kalisz and Jay Litherland continued a swimming tradition of the Americans going 1-2 in the 400m individual medley. On the women’s side, Emma Weyant and Hali Flickinger captured silver and bronze in the 400m individual medley. The women’s 4x100 freestyle relay also took the bronze medal.
William Shaner set an Olympic record in his 10m air rifle gold medal performance with 251.6 points. He had won a World Cup event in Croatia earlier this year. He’s a decorated shooter in college at University of Kentucky, finishing second at the NCAA championships as an individual and winning team gold in back-to-back seasons.
July 25/26 — Team USA swept gold in the individual skeet events, with Vincent Hancock winning the men’s event and Amber English winning the women’s event. The US also took home gold in the men’s 4x100m freestyle relay for the second straight Olympics.
July 26/27 — Lydia Jacoby added a gold in the 100-meter breaststroke. The big news Tuesday morning was Simone Biles withdrawing from the gymnastics team all-around after a poor showing on the vault. The US took home silver behind ROC.
