USA Volleyball will need to do some soul searching once they get home from Japan, but for now the goal is merely for the three teams still in medal contention to come away with some hardware from the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.
Gone are the indoor men’s volleyball team, who went 2-3 in pool play and lost to Argentina to miss the quarterfinal round. Also former gold medalist Phil Dalhausser and Nick Lucena beat a good Qatari team 21-14 on the beach in the first set, but dropped the final two and are heading home after the Round of 16. And it’s the same for Kelly Clayes and Sarah Sponcil who went 3-0 in pool play, but fell to Heather Bansley and Brandie Wilkerson of Canada after holding a 1-0 set lead in the 1/8 finals.
The pressure falls to April Ross and Alix Klineman, who draw a tough matchup in Cuba’s Lidy and Leila, but the Americans will be -900 favorites at DraftKings Sportsbook. Also Jacob Gibb and Tri Bourne, thrown together last minute due to COVID-19, will get Julius Thole and Clemens Wickler of Germany.
And the USA is safe for making the quarterfinals in women’s volleyball, but will play for seeding against Italy this evening. There’s a three-way tie for first atop the Group A standings, with only the winner not getting put in a randomizer for the crossover games against Group B to open the quarterfinals.
