Simone Biles claims bronze medal in women’s balance beam at Tokyo Olympics

American gymnast Simone Biles made her return to competition on Tuesday and medaled in the final event of the women’s gymnastics’ schedule at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics. Biles finished third in the balance beam to take home the bronze. Chinese gymnasts Chenchen Guan and Xijing Tang won gold and silver, respectively.

Biles had withdrawn from competition after a shaky vault run in the women’s team competition. She was concerned about mental health issues that led to her developing the twisties during her vault run. She had qualified for all four women’s individual events but withdrew from the women’s individual all-around and the individual finals for the vault, uneven bars, and floor exercise. However, she returned for the balance beam on the final day and had a solid showing.

Biles put up a difficulty score of 6.100 and an execution score of 7.900. Her teammate Sunisa Lee had the highest difficulty score at 6.400, but could only manage a 7.466 on execution and finished in fifth place. Canadian Elsabeth Black finished fourth.

DraftKings Sportsbook offered some limited odds on the event. Biles was installed as the favorite at -110 followed by Lee at +275 and Tang at +300.
