USA vs. Japan, Gold Medal Game, August 7/8
How USA got here: The Americans have won 54 consecutive Olympic games, and they’ve gone 5-0 into the gold medal game. Team USA won all five games by nine or more points, and games haven’t been too close down the stretch. The team faced Japan on July 30th and came away with an 86-69 victory. The Americans defeated Serbia handily in the semifinal game, but Diana Taurasi injured her hip in the third quarter and never returned to the floor.
How Japan got here: Japan’s only loss of this year’s Olympics came to the United States in the 17-point loss. The team has gone 4-1 to get this far and advanced to the gold medal game with an 87-71 victory over France in the semifinal round game. Japan pulled away for a pair of blowout wins and came away with two close victories.
