The Women’s high jump finals took place on Saturday night in Tokyo, Japan, with 14 athletes competing for the shot to win the gold medal. The US had one athlete participating in the final and that was Vashti Cunningham. Cunningham qualified for the finals after jumping 1.95 meters in the Group A qualifications.
However, Cunningham could not duplicate her performance on Saturday night, jumping 1.96 meters in the finals. The gold medal went to Mariya Lasitskene of Team ROC, who had a high jump of 2.04 meters, which was short of the Olympic record (2.06 meters).
The silver medal went to Nicola McDermott of Australia, who had a jump of 2.02 meters. The Aussie tried to jump 2.04 meters to dethrone Lasitskene, but she could not do it. The bronze medal went to Yaroslava Mahuchikh of Ukraine, who jumped 2.00 meters. The Ukrainian athlete finished second in the Group B qualifications with a 1.95-meter jump.
