Showdown Strategy

Los Angeles Dodgers

It is tough to know what to make of tonight’s pitching matchup from a fantasy standpoint. It doesn’t seem likely either of the starters will work deep into the game, which limits the fantasy appeal. I like Julio Urias ($10,400) a ton as a pitcher, but he’s worked a lot out of the bullpen this season. In three postseason outings, he’s only pitched a total of 11 innings. I expect a decent outing from Urias, although I can’t invest in a pitcher who is only averaging slightly over 60 pitches per outing in the playoffs.

If paying up for a hitter, Mookie Betts ($15,900 CP/$10,600) has to be considered a strong option. In a game where the pitching options are iffy, I like spending big on bats. Not only does Betts come with power upside, but he’s also doing all sorts of damage against the Rays on the base paths. In three games, Betts has reached base six times and stolen four bases. This kind of upside makes Betts worth playing in the Captain’s spot and he’s the current favorite to win World Series MVP on DraftKings Sportsbook at +185.

In the midrange, the best play here is AJ Pollock ($7,200). He’s always been great against left-handed pitching, although his price usually remains in check since he usually posts lower fantasy totals in games against righties. This isn’t a concern with a southpaw on the mound. Against lefties, Pollock has a 201 wRC+ this season.

There is always a risk that Kike Hernandez ($5,000) is lifted for a pinch hitter. Typically, he starts against lefties and Joc Pederson ($5,200) enters the game when a righty is on the mound. Even so, I like the upside of Hernandez at his price point. He’s one of the cheaper batters in this game and has a 120 wRC+ for his career off of southpaws.

Tampa Bay Rays

Like Urias, I can’t make an investment in Ryan Yarbrough ($10,000) tonight. It’s not that he isn’t a quality pitcher, the issue is that he rarely works deep into games. Yarbrough has topped out at 82 pitches in the postseason. With the Rays down 2-1, it also stands to reason that he’s going to have a short leash. If Yarbrough gets into any early trouble, he’s coming out of the game. I doubt we see him pitch more than three or four innings.

Randy Arozarena ($9,800) is having a historic postseason. Everything is jumping off of his bat and he homered once again Friday night in Game 3. A stat that seems nearly impossible, Arozarena has not gone three consecutive games without a homer in this postseason. In total, he’s launched nine homers, tying him for the record for most in a single postseason. Since I don’t love the pitchers, we can pay up for multiple bats in this game.

Kevin Kiermaier ($5,600) has finally seen a bit of a price increase, but he’s still one of the better value bats in this game. One thing that gives him a leg up over the other cheap options is that Kiermaier typically doesn’t get lifted for a pinch hitter. Due to his strong play on defense, Tampa Bay almost always leaves him in the game. Kiermaier is also producing on offense this series, averaging 7.0 DKFP at a discounted price.

It’s too bad that we haven’t seen Yandy Diaz ($4,800) get more playing time in this series. There’s a perception that he only hits left-handed pitching, but it isn’t true — he crushed lefties and righties. Diaz put up a 138 wRC+ in the regular season and was above-average against right-handed pitching as well as southpaws. His salary is too cheap when considering how good of a hitter he is.

EDITOR’S NOTE: Diaz is in the lineup for tonight’s game vs. the Dodgers.

The Outcome

This should play out a bit closer than the odds suggest, but I still favor the Dodgers to win. With all the weapons they have on offense, they have proven really tough to keep off the scoreboard. Los Angeles should win tonight and take control of the series.

Final Score: Los Angeles 5, Tampa Bay 3
