Showdown Strategy

Los Angeles Dodgers

We have another Clayton Kershaw ($17,400 CP/$11,600) start on tap tonight. He’s having a terrific postseason and started the World Series off with a strong game. In Game 1, he led the Dodgers to a win by pitching six scoreless innings and scoring 29.7 DKFP. For the playoffs, Kershaw is averaging 25.43 DKFP. Don’t buy into the narrative that Kershaw can’t pitch in the playoffs because the numbers don’t show this to be the case. He has a 3.00 SIERA in his career in the postseason and makes for a strong Captain play.

Since we have two aces on the hill today, good bats will be tough to come by. It’s not that these teams don’t have great offensive weapons, because they do. The problem is that I think this game will be low scoring. For this reason, I am looking to roster some cheap bats to jam in with pitching. Joc Pederson ($5,600) is almost certainly getting lifted for a pinch hitter at some point in Game 5, but he has the potential to a homer in one of the two or three plate appearances he sees.

If you’re desperate for some salary savings, Austin Barnes ($4,800) is almost always behind the dish when Kershaw pitches. He isn’t incapable of hitting and is likely going to be the cheapest starter in tonight’s game. Barnes homered and scored 16 DKFP in his last start.

In the midrange, Cody Bellinger ($8,800) is one of the higher upside bats and should come with less ownership than Mookie Betts ($9,800) and Randy Arozarena ($9,200). Even if he isn’t playing as well as the two aforementioned stars, Bellinger has four homers in the playoffs and has reached base in every game in this series. He’s a decent pivot with upside.

Tampa Bay Rays

Tyler Glasnow ($10,800) pitched really well in the first game of the series through four innings. Unfortunately, his pitch count got inflated but the Rays left him out anyway. Fatigue led to an implosion in the fifth inning as Glasnow tossed a career-high 112 pitches. The World Series isn’t the best time to try to extend a pitcher beyond his normal workload and Glasnow is still a great upside play even if he only pitches four innings. He struck out 14.28 hitters per nine innings in the regular season. I don’t like him as much as Kershaw, but Glasnow is a good DFS option.

As I wrote yesterday, I am not sure why Yandy Diaz ($5,000) is always getting lifted for a pinch hitter when a righty comes in. In the regular season, he had a 141 wRC+ against right-handed pitching and a 130 wRC+ against left-handed pitching. Diaz is one of the best hitters on the Rays and should always be in the lineup. He’s one of the better cheap plays tonight.

A couple of other plays to consider for cheap are Mike Brosseau ($5,800) and Hunter Renfroe ($6,200). Unfortunately, these two will almost certainly only play half the game because of pinch-hitting and defenses switches, but this is pretty unavoidable in this series. Brosseau and Renfroe both have big splits and hit left-handed pitching well.

EDITOR’S NOTE: Brosseau is not in the starting lineup for tonight’s game.

The Outcome

If Kershaw is on the mound, I am picking the Dodgers to win. We saw this same pitching matchup in the first game of the series and Los Angeles came away with an 8-3 win. Hopefully, Kershaw can have another good outing and change some of the narrative that surrounds him.

Final Score: Los Angeles 4, Tampa Bay 3
