The NHL is set to resume its season on Saturday, August 1, with a Qualifying Round Series for teams seeded 5 to 12 and round robin games for the Top 4 in each conference. You can find some analysis here about how things have changed since hockey was last played over four months ago:

Conference and Stanley Cup Odds

Looking at the betting lines, not a lot has actually changed in terms of who is expected to have the best chance to contend for a Stanley Cup. The teams at the top are essentially the same teams who were at the top in the Spring.

Conference Betting Splits

DraftKings Sportsbook bettors are also sticking to the favorites. The four teams with byes are the four most popular bets to win each conference.

Stanley Cup Betting Splits Since March

Since March, bettors have gotten more optimistic about the Avalanche and their chances to win the Stanley Cup. Here you can see how betting has shifted since the NHL season was suspended, with two main variables influencing this surge in Avalanche betting. The Avalanche are getting several key players back from injuries, many of whom had questionable statuses when the stoppage occurred. There are also more Avalanche fans among DraftKings Sportsbook users than there were before, with Colorado turning on legalized sports betting in the time since hockey was last played.

Long shots with Newfound Hope

One team that you’ll see here that’s popped up since March 17 is the Chicago Blackhawks, who were on the outside of the playoffs looking in, but the expanded format put them in the playoffs and has given them a chance to make a Stanley Cup run. They were 125-1 to win the Stanley Cup when the season was suspended on March 12, and they’ve moved to 75-1 since that time.

The Montreal Canadiens have also become a similar long shot contender. They were 10 points back of the 8th place Maple Leafs on March 12, with their playoff hopes dwindling, but they’ve managed to sneak into the playoffs as well and while they have a tough draw against the Pittsburgh Penguins in the Qualifying Round, they’ve been given life that they didn’t previously have. The Canadiens’ odds to win the Stanley Cup have moved from 350-1 to 80-1.
