NBA Best Bets: Predictions to Consider on DraftKings Sportsbook for July 30

Charlie Mulllan gives his best bets for Thursday’s NBA action on DraftKings Sportsbook.

The NBA returns to action with two games taking place inside the bubble at Disney World in Orlando. The league will hope this restart goes smoother than the start of the MLB season, which saw multiple games get postponed due to positive tests for COVID-19. In the NBA’s first game since March 12, the Jazz take on the Pelicans at 6:30 p.m. ET before the Lakers and Clippers - the top two seeds in the a Western Conference - do battle at 9:00 p.m. ET.

Utah Jazz vs. New Orleans Pelicans: Pelicans win (-136)

Before the lockdown, the Jazz were sitting comfortably as fourth seeds in the Western Conference, but turmoil within the team has threatened to derail their hopes of winning their first ever NBA title. Center Rudy Gobert, who tested positive for COVID-19 after childishly touching reporters’ recording devices during a post-game press conference, was said to be unhappy with the number of touches he was getting, which led to friction between himself and shooting guard Donovan Mitchell, who leads the team in points and steals. Gobert, who leads Utah in rebounds and blocks, might get his wish and be more involved after forward Bojan Bogdanovic was ruled out of the remainder of the season with a wrist injury.

These issues play into the hands of the Pelicans, who are well backed to hit the ground running in this game, especially with rookie sensation Zion Williamson back inside the bubble. Williamson spent time away from the time ahead of this game to deal with a family matter, but he’s back and ready to lead the Pelicans into the playoffs. New Orleans is 3.5 games behind eighth seed Memphis and a win in this game will put the Pelicans right in the mix to make the postseason.

Utah Jazz vs. New Orleans Pelicans: Over 226 total points (Alternate Total Points) (+140)

Get the popcorn out, sit back and enjoy. These two sides bring the best out of each other when they have met this season. This will be their fourth meeting and the previous three averaged 257.3 total points per game. The over/under set at 221 points seems low to me and with no spectators courtside, the opening games may see an increase in scoring.

It might be worth looking at an alternative over/under total, and over 226 points (+140) offers more value. In their three previous meetings with New Orleans, Utah has scored an average of 129.3 points while the Pelicans averaged 128.0 points in those meetings. The last meeting in Utah needed overtime for the outcome to be decided. The Pelicans have better scoring stats than the Jazz with 116.2 points per game compared to Utah’s 111.0, but it’s their defense that has let New Orleans down. They concede just over nine points more per game than their opponents (117.0 to 107.9) but Pelicans head coach Alvin Gentry will hope that his time spent in lockdown will have helped him come up with a way of improving the defensive side of their game.

Utah Jazz vs. New Orleans Pelicans: Brandon Ingram to score over 23.5 points (-115)

There is something about playing the Jazz that elevates power forward Brandon Ingram to a new level. Ingram averaged more points per game against Utah than any other team before lockdown. Ingram scored 33 points in the first meeting, 35 in the second and 49 in the overtime game on January 16. Clearly the Jazz have struggled to contain Ingram, and if New Orleans is to win this game, they are going to need Ingram to be top of his game. If Utah has figured out a way to limit Ingram’s contribution, then the Pelicans better have a plan B.

Los Angeles Clippers vs. Los Angeles Lakers: Lakers Moneyline (-167)

What a coincidence it is that the first game back after lockdown is a repeat of the season opener for these two LA teams. The Lakers won by 10 points on October 22 and will see this as a great opportunity to open up a six-and-a-half game lead over the Clippers in the Pacific division. The Clippers will be without shooting guard Lou Williams, who is in the middle of a 10-day quarantine period following a trip to Magic City. Williams averages 5.7 assists per game and will be missed. They could also be without center Montrezl Harrell, who is still outside the Orlando bubble dealing with a private matter. Harrell leads the Clippers in field goal shooting with a 58.0 percent success rate. The Lakers have their own issues with Anthony Davis’ eye injury, although Davis expects to play. Even if Davis does not play, the Lakers should have enough strength in depth to mark their return to the court with a win.

Los Angeles Clippers vs. Los Angeles Lakers: Over 216 total points (-112)

Ir’s uncertain what type of tempo these seeding matches will be played at. In other sports, they have generally been played at a slower pace than normal as players ease their way back into action following a 141-day break for COVID-19. There could be more fast breaks than normal as teams look to catch their opponents cold following an attack. The over/under for this game has been set at 216 and I would go over. I think there will be more points than that. In the three meetings this season, the average points scored has been 215.3. Let’s not forget there is no home court advantage for either side which will make this feel like an exhibition game and we know how high-scoring they can be. These two teams are seeded one and two in the Western Conference so it’s only right that we should expect their star-studded rosters to mark the return of the NBA with a bang.

Los Angeles Clippers vs. Los Angeles Lakers: Kawhi Leonard to score over 26.5 points (-125)

Leonard is looking to win a third title with a third different team and he is pivotal to the Clippers going all the way this year. Leonard raises his game against the Lakers, averaging 30.6 per game, which is almost four points more than his season average of 26.9. The Clippers will look to get him in the paint as often as possible against a Lakers team that will hope they have used the lockdown period to find a way of shutting him down. Vogel will hope to get more from point guard LeBron James, who has underperformed against the Clippers compared to his stats for the rest of the season. James averages 25.7 points per game this season, but that drops to 23.0 against their city rivals. A four-and-a-half month break will have done James the power of good and he will do all he can to lead his team to victory and show why they remain favorites to win the franchise’s 17th title.
