A new Bundesliga season kicks off on Friday with defending champions Bayern Munich facing Schalke 04 in the opener. We break down picks for captain and the flex positions for DraftKings’ soccer showdown.

Set your DraftKings lineups here: Bundesliga Showdown $35K Counter Attack Special [$10K to 1st] (BAY vs S04)

Captain

Robert Lewandowski ($19,200)

Lewandowski was comfortably the leading goal-scorer in the previous Bundesliga season, with 34 goals. Next on the list was Timo Werner with 28 goals. Without Werner in the Bundesliga this year, it’s highly likely that Lewandowski will lead the goal-scoring charts again. He currently averages 21.5 DKFP per game.

Others to consider: Serge Gnabry ($14,400)

High-priced flex options

Serge Gnabry ($9,600)

Gnabry has been a standout performer for manager Hans Dieter-Flick. His speed and dribbling skill, as individual characteristics, make him hard to stop. Both of those traits together in a single play can be devastating, as was seen during the Champions League against some of the best teams in the world, including Barcelona. He averages 15.4 DKFP per game, second highest on this slate.

Thomas Muller ($11,200)

While all the spotlight has fallen on Lewandowski and Gnabry, Muller has quietly executed his role. Bayern Munich maintains a very high offensive line, which means players around the box have plenty of width and space. That can be lethal when Muller has the ball. In the 2019-20 Bundesliga season, his role transitioned to a provider as he racked up 21 assists along with eight goals.

Joshua Kimmich ($8,400)

Kimmich’s category has changed from defender to midfielder on DraftKings. That’s a good indicator that his offensive contributions have increased substantially. He still moves back to help out defensively, but he is a willing attacking option for Bayern Munich. He used the right flank well last season, drilling accurate deliveries into the box. With Lewandowski and Muller in there, he has a high chance for an assist in this game.

Others to consider: Leon Goretzka ($7,600).

Value flex options

Mark Uth ($7,200)

Schalke acquired Uth from Koln in the offseason. He will certainly provide the team with a bit more offensive vigor after a sub-par season in 2019-20. He scored five goals along with five assists for Koln last season. For this slate, Uth is a hedging target against a strong Bayern Munich defense, but he also has a chance to capitalize on the counter-attack with a high line maintained by Bayern’s preferred press.

Manuel Neuer ($8,000)

Bayern Munich is such a stellar offensive team that the defense can occasionally be forgotten. The Bundesliga is an incredibly fast-paced league, with a much higher goal average per game than the rest of Europe. Despite this, Bayern Munich has the best defense in the league. Even last year, the team conceded the fewest goals in the Bundesliga. Neuer has a lot to do with that. Only a fantastic play from Schalke will prevent another clean sheet for him.

Others to consider: Alphonso Davies ($6,600)
