Manchester City opens its 2020-21 campaign with a trip to Molineux Stadium to face Wolves on Monday evening. With some players questionable, we break down DraftKings’ soccer showdown, with suggestions for Captain and the flex positions.

Captain

Kevin De Bruyne ($19,200)

De Bruyne was recently awarded the PFA Player of the Year. Not many can argue that he didn’t deserve that honor after his stellar performance in the 2019-20 campaign. He scored 13 goals and led the Premier League with 20 assists. Intangibly, his precision and accuracy kickstarted several plays that eventually ended up with the ball in the back of the net. There is far too much value in him as your Captain.

Others to consider: Raheem Sterling ($16,800)

High-priced flex options

Raheem Sterling ($11,200)

Sterling hadn’t scored a goal for a sizable chunk of this year. He broke that drought with a clinical finish in the first game back after the suspension against Arsenal and he has been in tearaway form ever since. He finished the last season as the league’s fourth-highest goal scorer with 20 goals. It wouldn’t be farfetched to say he could surpass that tally this season.

Gabriel Jesus ($9,600)

Manchester City confirmed Sergio Aguero could be out for another two months with his knee injury. That should mean more starts for Jesus as he settles into this new role. He filled that void with aplomb after the resumption of the EPL as he eventually finished with 14 goals and seven assists. Wolves will want to ensure he doesn’t have space in the box to intercept the deliveries of de Bruyne, in particular.

Raul Jimenez ($8,000)

Jimenez had an excellent campaign last season as he finished with 17 goals. His proficiency in the air fit right into Wolves’ set-up, with deliveries aimed at his head from either flank. He is also Wolves’ designated penalty taker. With VAR becoming so universal in its impact of decisions in the box, that could be a crucial factor.

Others to consider: Bernardo Silva ($8,200)

Value flex options

Adama Traore ($7,200)

There was plenty of speculation about Traore’s future with Wolves. He will stay with Wolves, at least for the foreseeable future, which has become additionally important following the imminent departure of Diogo Jota to Liverpool. He doesn’t have the obvious goal-scoring impact but he adds so much value with his speed and power down the right wing. He is also averaging 11.3 DKFP per game.

Ilkay Gundogan ($5,000)

Riyad Mahrez ($9,000) is doubtful as he makes progress toward full fitness after he tested positive for the coronavirus. Bernardo Silva ($8,200) picked up a quadriceps strain whilst on international duty, which means Gundogan will have to step up to the starting XI. He will play a holding midfielder role while moving forward in build-up plays and the occasional counter-attack.

Others to consider: Ederson ($6,800)
