Fantasy Basketball Picks: Top DraftKings NBA Snake DFS Strategy for January 13

Alex Hunter breaks down Wednesday’s DraftKings NBA Snake contest, which locks at 7:00 p.m. ET.

The NBA season continues tonight and barring any more postponements, we should see eight games on Wednesday night, and if you haven’t by now, you need to check out DraftKings’ new Snake Draft format!

If you’ve ever played season-long fantasy before – either for NBA or any other sport – you’re likely familiar with how a Snake Draft works. In short, for these contests, once the allotted number of entries are filled in a contest, the draft will begin one minute later. The entrants are assigned a random draft order and will commence in that order. The player with the first pick gets dibs on anyone while the player with the last pick will get a double pick, as it’ll end the first round and thus begin the second.

Roster requirements for lineups: G – 2, F/C – 2, Util – 2

Favorable Early Round Targets

Luka Doncic, G, Dallas Mavericks

NBA Snake Rank: 1

The Mavs are expected to get Kristaps Porzingis (knee) back tonight vs. the Hornets, but they are still without many other key players due to the NBA’s COVID-19 policies. Their injury report lists all of Josh Richardson, Dorian Finney-Smith, Maxi Kleber, Dwight Powell and Jalen Brunson out for health concerns. The sample size is small, but when Doncic has played without all of these players over the last two seasons, the Slovenian superstar has scored 1.6 DKFP per minute.

His usage should be enormous tonight and Doncic is producing 66.5 DKFP per game across his last four. He is coming into this contest with three days of rest under his belt and Doncic should be the first player off the board in snake drafts tonight, regardless of this Hornets defense presenting a tough matchup (9th in efficiency).

Damian Lillard, G, Portland Trail Blazers

NBA Snake Rank: 6

Lillard has struggled in his last two, scoring less than 40 DKFP points in each, but tonight’s matchup vs. the Kings is exactly what the doctor ordered. Up until this point of the season, Sacramento is the worst defense in basketball in terms of efficiency.

Plus, they rank inside the top-ten in pace and this Western Conference matchup should be an absolute shootout, hence it has a slate-high O/U game total of 235.5 points on DraftKings Sportsbook. In his last eight starts that took place in a game total of 235 points or higher, Lillard has been spectacular with 54.6 DKFP per game.

Early Round Player to Avoid:

Trae Young, G, Atlanta Hawks

NBA Snake Rank: 12

Editor’s note: Tonight’s game between the Hawks and Suns has been postponed.

Young has been a huge disappointment recently, supplying only 31 DKFP per game in his past three. Yes, we are only ten games into the season for the Hawks, but Young is averaging 5.4 DKFP less than a year ago and his usage rate has dropped by 2.5 percentage points. Now enter in an ugly matchup with the Suns and Young is an easy fade at his high draft ranking.

With Chris Paul in town, Phoenix is giving up the 3rd least DKFP per game to opposing PGs and they rank 28th in pace.

Late Round Fliers:

Jarrett Allen, F/C, Brooklyn Nets

NBA Snake Rank: 37

Allen is clearly well ahead DeAndre Jordan right now, starting at center in five straight contests for Brooklyn. With the starting role, he has generated 34.8 DKFP per game and has reached the DraftKings double-double bonus three times. Additionally, Allen has managed to avoid serious foul trouble in all five of these tilts as a starter, and he has logged 31.7 minutes per game as a result.

He should be right around 30 minutes again tonight, in an appetizing spot against the Knicks. Head Coach Tom Thibodeau has them playing much better this season, but this defense is still very susceptible to big men, allowing the 6th most DKFP per game to opposing centers. Allen should tally a double-double in this inner city matchup and is a nice mid-round target to fill out your snake lineup.

Richaun Holmes, F/C, Sacramento Kings

NBA Snake Rank: 45

Holmes (probable, ankle) returned from a one game absence on Monday and showed no signs of an injury, putting up 47.5 DKFP in 36 minutes vs. the Pacers. He was huge for the Kings in the win, finishing with a team-best +12 in plus/minus. This marked Holmes’ third effort of over 40 DKFP in his last six games and he should be very active again when the Blazers come to town on Wednesday.

As noted above, this contest is slated for the most points on this eight-game slate, and this Portland squad is yielding the 9th most rebounds per game. Holmes is scoring 7.0 more DKFP per game on his home court this season and his upside is far greater than most of the players ranked around him tonight.

Tyus Jones, G, Memphis Grizzlies

NBA Snake Rank: 51

With Ja Morant (ankle) still sidelined, Jones has found his groove as the Grizzlies’ starting point guard. He is averaging 30.1 DKFP per game over his past six and has really flashed some great upside in his most recent two, first with 40.5 DKFP against the Nets and then 35.25 DKFP vs. the Cavs. Jones’ playing time has been very consistent during this time, with the guard obtaining at least 30 minutes in four of his last five.

Now for Wednesday night, Jones gets an excellent matchup vs. the Wolves, who have the 3rd worst defense in the league right now. They are surrendering the 5th most DKFP per game to opposing point guards and this contest’s total currently sits at 220 points on DraftKings Sportsbook. 30-40 DKFP is certainly achievable for Jones in this setting and he is a name that could easily slip past his draft ranking.
