Fantasy Basketball Picks: Top DraftKings NBA Snake DFS Strategy for February 17

Alex Hunter breaks down Wednesday’s DraftKings NBA Snake contest, which locks at 7:00 p.m. ET.

There are ten NBA games on the schedule tonight and if you haven’t by now, you need to check out DraftKings’ new Snake Draft format! Below, we break down some of the best targets for tonight’s DraftKings NBA Snake slate.

Favorable Early Round Targets

Joel Embiid, F/C, Philadelphia 76ers

NBA Snake Rank: 2

Embiid (back) was a scratched right before tipoff Monday, but he is listed as probable for tonight’s matchup against the Rockets. In his last ten starts, the center is amassing 54.3 DKFP per game, and Embiid currently ranks second in odds to win the MVP this season (+450) on DraftKings Sportsbook. This Houston club he is going against has allowed the most rebounds per game this season and they will continue to be without their top center Christian Wood (ankle).

Current starter DeMarcus Cousins has the size to matchup with Embiid, but he doesn’t have the speed, agility or patience to slow down this monster on his home floor. During the Embiid era, the Sixers have notoriously been a far better home team and over the past two seasons, and the former Kansas Jayhawk is scoring 4.9 more DKFP per game on his home floor compared to when he is on the road. Embiid is going to destroy Cousins for a minimum of 50 DKFP tonight and hopefully the injury tag next to his name results in him dropping a little past his pre-draft ranking.

Jimmy Butler, F/C, Miami Heat

NBA Snake Rank: 16

The Heat keep losing, but Butler is doing everything he can to save their season. In Monday’s loss vs. the Clippers, the 31-year-old was outstanding with a 30/10/10 triple-double of 65.5 DKFP. This set a new season-high for Butler and since returning from his self-isolation, he is amassing 50.2 DKP per game.

In desperate need of a victory, Butler and the Heat head to the bay to meet a Golden State club that is the second fastest unit in basketball. This is a huge pace increase for this Miami team that ranks 23rd in possessions per game, and Butler is a very safe investment for 40-50 DKFP.

Early Round Player To Avoid

Trae Young, G, Atlanta Hawks

NBA Snake Rank: 10

Young has been very underwhelming recently, failing to surpass 40 DKFP in three straight. Over his last two, he has faced two top-ten defenses, the Knicks and Pacers, and things don’t get any easier tonight against the Celtics. Yes, Marcus Smart (calf) is still sidelined for Boston, but they have still locked down opposing point guards, giving up the 5th least DKFP per game to the position over their last five.

They also defend the three point line very well, yielding the 6th least made three pointers per game and the 8th lowest three point percentage this season. Young will find his groove again soon, but I don’t think it will happen tonight, and I certainly don’t want to waste a top-ten pick on the struggling guard.

Late Round Fliers

Jaylen Brown, G, Boston Celtics

NBA Snake Rank: 25

Brown has been one of the most consistent players in fantasy basketball this season. He recorded 39.75 DKFP in last night’s win against the Nuggets and has contributed at least 35 DKFP in 21 of his 25 games this season. It feels like a forgone conclusion Brown will be named to his first All-Star team this coming Thursday, but first, the Cal product has a date with the Hawks this evening.

This Atlanta defense ranks 26th in defensive rating across their past ten and Kemba Walker should get the night off for Boston with this being the second night of a back-to-back. The point guard hasn’t be available for both legs of a back-to-back this year and Smart is also still on the shelf. When these guards have been off the court in 2020-21, Brown’s usage rate has risen to a large 32%. He has generated 3.3 more DKFP at home in the TD Garden this year and Brown brings safety and upside tonight.

Jamal Murray, G, Denver Nuggets

NBA Snake Rank: 37

Last night vs. the Celtics, Murray collected 45 DKFP across 33.3 minutes. The Nuggets were without Will Barton (personal), Paul Millsap (knee), P.J. Dozier (hamstring), Monte Morris (shoulder) and Gary Harris in this loss, pushing Murray’s usage rate up to a season-high 35.1%. Most of these players should remain out again Wednesday and even if a few of them returned, Murray’s role should remain large in this gorgeous spot vs. the Wizards.

After Tuesday night, the 23-year-old is scoring 41.4 DKFP per game over his past three and the success should continue against this Wizards club that is 1st in pace and 26th in defensive efficiency.

David Nwaba, F/C, Houston Rockets

NBA Snake Rank: 146

Monday night, all of Victor Oladipo (foot), Christian Wood (ankle), Eric Gordon (groin), P.J. Tucker (quad) and Dante Exum (calf) were out for Houston. With the club so shorthanded, Nwaba entered the starting five and posted 41.75 DKFP against the Wizards. He led the team with 40.6 minutes and the only player of that group that has a chance of returning tonight is Tucker, considering his questionable tag ahead of Wednesday’s matchup with the Sixers.

Nwaba’s efforts Monday should have been enough to earn him another start and the 28-year-old should log 35-40 minutes, no matter the status of Tucker. This matchup against Philadelphia is brutal (7th in defensive efficiency), but you would be hard pressed to find a player this deep in the draft rankings that is projected for more volume than Nwaba tonight. I wouldn’t expect another 40 DKFP outburst, but the wing should finish in the 20-30 DKFP range.
