Thursday’s five-game slate in the NBA includes an exciting matchup between the Los Angeles Lakers and Denver Nuggets, two teams that could face each other again deep in the Western Conference playoffs. This matchup is also the featured Showdown contest on DraftKings, so let’s discuss some players to consider as you build your lineups.

Los Angeles Lakers vs. Denver Nuggets

Captain’s Pick

LeBron James ($17,400 CP): There are basically three players to consider for the Captain’s spot. Nikola Jokic ($18,600 CP) would be the most expensive, and he has a high floor, but this isn’t exactly a great matchup considering the Lakers have the best defensive rating in the league. James also comes with an incredibly high floor, averaging 49 DKFP per game. The Nuggets have also allowed the third-most assists per game in the league, which is an area that James obviously excels in with his average of 7.5 dimes a contest.

Anthony Davis ($16,800 CP): The third player in the discussion along with Jokic and James for the Captain’s Pick is Davis. His scoring numbers are down this season, thanks to him averaging 2.7 fewer free-throw attempts per game and shooting just 70.9 percent on the attempts that he has taken. However, it’s hard to complain about a player who is averaging 22.3 points, 8.7 rebounds, 3.3 assists, 1.3 steals and 1.9 blocks. He’s also remained extremely efficient from the field, shooting 52.4 percent.

UTIL Plays

Will Barton ($6,400): Expect Barton to play a lot in this game with Gary Harris (thigh) and PJ Dozier (hamstring) out. After Harris went down early in Sunday’s game against the Jazz, Barton was forced to play a total of 37 minutes in the contest, which he turned into 35.3 DKFP. What’s so appealing about Barton is that he can contribute in multiple areas, evident by the fact that he has averaged 11.1 points, four rebounds and 3.1 assists despite only playing 29 minutes per contest.

Monte Morris ($4,800): Morris is another player who could see added playing time with Harris and Dozier out. He’s become an important part of their bench, averaging a career-high 10.8 points per game. He’s also been an asset in the assists department throughout his career, averaging 3.4 assists per game this season after averaging at least 3.5 of them in both of the last two seasons.

Kentavious Caldwell-Pope ($3,200): We’re continuing to hunt for players with cheap salaries so we can play at least two of James, Davis and Jokic in a lineup. Caldwell-Pope might be worth taking a chance on given his three-point shooting prowess. He’s on pace to average at least 1.8 triples a game for the fourth time in the last five seasons and the Nuggets have had trouble defending behind the arc, allowing the 10th-highest three-point shooting percentage in the league.

Michael Porter Jr. ($7,200): This could be a tough matchup for Porter. Most of his contributions come in terms of points and rebounds, which are two areas that the Lakers excel in slowing down their opponents. As mentioned previously, the Lakers have the best defensive rating in the league. On top of that, they have allowed the third-fewest rebounds per game. Porter’s salary could also hinder your ability to add two of the top three players to your entry, so it might be best to just avoid him altogether.

The Outcome

The Lakers have been road warriors this season, posting a 12-2 record there. However, they are only 4-4 at home. The Nuggets are also 7-3 on the road, so this has the makings of a hard-fought contest that could come down to the final minutes. With that being said, look for the Lakers’ defense to give the Nuggets a lot of trouble, and ultimately propel them to a victory.

Final Score: Lakers 111, Nuggets 107
