Fantasy Basketball Picks: Top DraftKings NBA DFS Lineup Strategy for Lakers vs. Timberwolves Showdown on March 16

Mike Barner gives his top NBA lineup advice for Tuesday’s fantasy basketball Showdown contest on DraftKings between the Lakers and Timberwolves, which starts at 10:30 p.m. ET.

Tuesday brings seven games in the NBA, including a couple of exciting matchups between teams with playoff aspirations. One matchup that has the potential to produce a lopsided score is the Los Angeles Lakers hosting the Minnesota Timberwolves. That game is also the featured Showdown contest on DraftKings, so let’s discuss how things might play out on both sides.

Los Angeles Lakers vs. Minnesota Timberwolves

SHOWDOWN STRATEGY

Captain’s Pick

LeBron James ($18,900 CP): James stands out as maybe the top choice for the Captain’s spot among players on both teams. With Anthony Davis (calf) out, James has scored at least 51.5 DKFP in six of his last 10 games. However, it’s worth noting that the Lakers just played the Warriors on Monday and they have five total games this week. If there was ever a time to rest James, this matchup versus an inferior foe might be it. If you decide to roll with him in this spot, just be sure to monitor for updates on his status leading up to tip off.

Kyle Kuzma ($11,400 CP): If you want to roll with a more well-balanced lineup, then deploying Kuzma at this spot is appealing. Like James, he’s stepped up with Davis out, scoring at least 30 DKFP in six of his last nine contests. With the Timberwolves sporting the fifth-worst defensive rating in the league, Kuzma’s expanded role could help him provide significant returns in this matchup.

UTIL Plays

Anthony Edwards ($9,000): With D’Angelo Russell (knee) and Malik Beasley (suspension) out, Edwards has quickly become one of the focal points of the Timberwolves’ offense. He hasn’t disappointed, averaging 23.9 points and 2.9 three-pointers over his last seven games. Add in respectable averages of 5.9 rebounds and 1.9 steals during that stretch and he’s an appealing option despite the Lakers being one of the toughest defensive teams in the league.

Montrezl Harrell ($7,800): Davis isn’t the only frontcourt player that the Lakers are missing right now. Marc Gasol (COVID-19) has missed four straight games and won’t be able to make his return Tuesday. Across the previous four games that he missed, Harrell scored at least 34 DKFP three times. With the Timberwolves ranked 27th in terms of fantasy points allowed to opposing centers, Harrell could be in line for a productive evening.

Talen Horton-Tucker ($3,600): The Lakers demolished the Warriors on Monday, which resulted in Horton-Tucker logging 28 minutes. Never one to shy away from shot attempts, he scored 18 points on his way to 40.5 DKFP. With the team set to play on consecutive nights, and the potential for another blowout, don’t be surprised if Horton-Tucker sees significant playing time again.

Fades

Ricky Rubio ($7,200): Even with the Timberwolves being so shorthanded, Rubio hasn’t been very productive. In fact, he’s scored fewer than 30 DKFP in six of the last eight games. With more appealing options like Harrell, Kuzma and Dennis Schroder ($8,000) all in the same salary range, taking a chance on Rubio having one of his better performances seems like an unnecessary risk.

The Outcome

Operating under the assumption that James does play in this game, it’s going to be an uphill battle for the Timberwolves to keep things close, let alone pull off the win. They have been awful on the road, posting a 4-16 record away from Minnesota. As far as the spread goes, though, they are 8-12 against the spread on the road, while the Lakers are only 8-12 against the spread at home.

Final Score: Lakers 114, Timberwolves 105
