The second WGC Event of the season takes place this week at Austin CC for the WGC Dell Technologies Match Play. The top 64 golfers will face off in a bracket-style format. For a rundown of the format, refer to this DraftKings Playbook Article. Also, the tournament starts on Wednesday, which is a day earlier than usual.
2015 marked the change in the Match Play format to what we see now, and for the last four years, the tournament has been hosted here at Austin CC. The previous four winners’ average odds were +3850, with Kevin Kisner as the longest at +8000 and Dustin Johnson the shortest at +1000. Expanding out over the past seven years, the average odds were +3100. Along with Austin CC, TPC Harding Park and The Golf Club at Dove Mountain were the other courses that have hosted the tournament during this timeframe. The outright market is still providing us with winners at or below +8000. Matt Jones’ pre-tournament odds last week at the Honda Classic were +7000.
Even though Match Play experience is necessary and somewhat of a priority to win, current form is also essential. The past winners dating back to 2015 have won in their last five events coming into the Match Play, except for Kevin Kisner in 2019.
As mentioned in the DraftKings Preview article, Hatton has a knack for Match Play, which bodes well with his stellar current form. Hatton could eventually play both Dustin Johnson (+1400) and Bryson DeChambeau (+1400) if both were to also advance. His T9 in 2019 and his ball-striking, which ranks top five over the previous 24 rounds, should be all the evidence you need to back him this week, even against the best in the world.
Momentum in golf is significant, and getting one of the best ball-strikers over the previous two tournaments at plus-money to win his group feels like value. Yes, he’s going up against a trio of Pete Dye specialists, but few are hitting it better than Thomas, ranking second in approach over his previous 24 rounds. Louis Oosthuizen (+250) would be the next choice in this group with a 23-14-3 career singles record in Match Play.
Throw current form out the window with this one and embrace the chaos and variance of this tournament. Wolff has been an absolute terror the past few times he’s teed it up and has sported an injury over the last month or so. Still, Wolff’s talent is undeniable, and when he’s playing his best, he’s tough to beat. Conversely, Conners has been outstanding over his previous few tournaments, but neither has played in this event before. I’d argue, Wolff has more relevant experience with the Match Play format, only being a couple of years removed from his time at Oklahoma State, where he performed admirably in singles at a similar format.
