Ladies and gentlemen, the weekend. We’ve got a splendid seven-game slate coming your way on the hardwood on Saturday night, with several teams coming off back-to-backs and at least a couple of matchups that promise to impress. Los Angeles Lakers vs. Brooklyn Nets

Nets -10.5

In the “Boy, imagine LeBron and AD were healthy” Bowl, I don’t see much of a reason to believe in the Lakers. They are 4-6 against the spread without the pair this year, and the games which they’ve either won or kept competitive have been against very bad opponents. To make matters worse, Kyle Kuzma, Marc Gasol and Alex Caruso are questionable for this one. The absence of the former would bring an already-slow offense to a halt, and the latter two have been vital to the Lakers’ defense, which started the year at an elite pace and has barely hung on without L.A.’s stars. Brooklyn’s offense should dominate.

Washington Wizards vs. Phoenix Suns

Suns -12

I will admit, there aren’t many teams I love more than the Phoenix Suns. I find myself backing them night after night because they play spectacular defense and have a knack for getting by in close games thanks to Chris Paul. This one shouldn’t be quite so close, though. Not only are the Suns beastly against the spread at home, going 18-9, they’re also a ridiculous 16-7 ATS as home favorites. Phoenix checks both boxes on Saturday night, and the Wizards, who have managed to cover in three straight, might not have Bradley Beal here. I expect them to struggle here going up in competition from the Warriors to the Suns, and also don’t have any idea how they’ll score without Beal.

Philadelphia 76ers vs. Oklahoma City Thunder

Thunder +10.5

Alright, this is called best “bets” for a reason, right? So, we’re going to bet against the health of Joel Embiid. He’s questionable on the second night of a back-to-back here for Philly, and even before his long injury-related absence his status in these spots was spotty. I really have a hard time believing he’ll give it a go here, especially against such a weak opponent.

With that said, the Sixers’ offense should really be hurting. Not only has this team scored roughly 13 fewer points per 100 possessions without Embiid, we literally just got to see what this team looks like without him — and it’s bad. The Sixers struggled to cover, and score the basketball in general, without Embiid, and I don’t think things will be too peachy if he sits here.
