Offense Notes

Worthy Nationals Chalk?

The Nationals are probably in the best spot of any team on Thursday’s main slate, drawing a mediocre pitcher in Merrill Kelly ($7,100) while also getting the benefit of a strong hitting environment in their home stadium. At first glance it may seem like Juan Soto ($6,000) and Trea Turner ($5,800) are too expensive, but the rest of the lineup is cheap enough that it shouldn’t be very hard to fit those two into a stack. The Nats are going to be popular, but it seems fairly worthwhile to target them in GPPs regardless.

Leverage Spot for Diamondbacks

The Diamondbacks are on the opposite side of the game in D.C., and they’re facing Patrick Corbin ($7,800), who very likely will be the highest owned pitcher of the day of Thursday. Corbin is underpriced and is very deserving of the ownership, but that’s also because it’s a relatively weak pitching slate and not because he’s a safe play. Corbin struggled in his first start of the season last time out after returning from the COVID IL, and it wouldn’t be a huge surprise to see him struggle again even in a good matchup. The Arizona hitters are pretty cheap, and they should be low owned with so many lineups containing Corbin.

A’s Value Too Good to be True?

The Oakland A’s are probably the best spot to go to for salary savings on this slate, but it’s not necessarily as great of a spot as it looks. Tigers starter Tarik Skubal ($6,300) has had a rough start to the season, but he flashed a lot of upside in his rookie year in 2020 and he’s shown the ability to miss plenty of bats. The A’s also just simply aren’t a great offense, and the most appealing part of this team by far is the fact that they all don’t cost very much. This is likely going to make them a very popular choice for Thursday night, and it just seems like there are a lot of similarly competent teams who will be much lower owned.
