Offense Notes

Are the Yankees Avoidable?

Monday’s matchup for the Yankees is just about ideal on paper, facing the Orioles in the hitter-friendly Camden Yards with Matt Harvey ($5,300) taking the mound. The Yankees have been incredibly proficient in their recent games in Baltimore — as would be expected with Baltimore’s well below-average pitching — and this figures to be the most popular spot on Monday’s slate. The Yanks also aren’t all that expensive either, with only Aaron Judge ($5,900) being priced above $5K, and that affordability is going to make this lineup extremely difficult for most people to pass up. There isn’t really an obvious downside to playing Yankees hitters except for the fact that there are 17 other offenses on this slate and the ownership is going to be extremely high. Harvey has been a bit better this year than he was the last few seasons, but ownership is really the major variable when considering Yankees stacks in GPPs. It’s likely going to be too challenging to build a viable and unique enough lineup with five hitters from this team, but it’s also not a bad idea to prioritize a Yankee or two even when playing other stacks.

Overpriced/Undervalued Astros and Phillies

A large portion of GPP lineups on Monday are going to be Yankees stacks, and without much savings to be had at pitcher, the next group of popular teams are likely going to be the cheap ones. The Angels are extremely cheap after Mike Trout ($6,300) and teams like the Mariners, Giants, and Orioles could be sensible choices as well due to their low prices. The Braves are probably going to be the next most common team to pay up for, with a good matchup at home against Zach Davies ($7,500) and the Cubs, and that’s going to leave some pretty good offenses with some very low ownership. The Astros and Phillies both have good-but-not-great matchups against decent opposing pitchers, and the prices on both teams are high enough that most people aren’t going to want to play them. Justus Sheffield ($5,500) and Adam Wainwright ($7,200) are certainly beatable, however, and both of these offenses are simply too good for the egregiously low ownership that they’re likely to get.
