Offense Notes

Targeting Offense in a Matchup Between Aces?

Monday night’s slate is a pretty small one with just six games and twelve teams to choose from, but there also isn’t any one particular team that stands out as the top offensive target. As a result, there’s likely going to be excessive ownership on a handful of teams — notably Baltimore, Detroit, Cleveland, Chicago, and Minnesota — and some others that are much lower owned than they should be. Two of the teams that could be among the strongest GPP options are the Padres and Brewers, and that may seem peculiar considering the matchup between Brandon Woodruff ($10,600) and Blake Snell ($8,900). Again, this slate is on the smaller side and that means there’s more of a need to do something unique to gain an edge in GPPs.

So why this game in particular? Well this matchup between Woodruff and Snell is sort of a duel of aces, but in reality these are really second tier arms (a notch below Cy Young level) and they’re getting treated as better than what they are due to the context of Monday’s slate, where there aren’t any truly elite starting pitchers to pick from. The prices on the Padres and Brewers hitters also aren’t that appealing either — see Fernando Tatis Jr. ($6,200) — so there’s just no way for the vast majority of lineups to prioritize these players, especially when they’re paying up for expensive pitchers. Simply put, both of these teams have good hitters who are in bad-but-not-horrible matchups, and there’s far more upside here than what the field is going to give them credit for.
