Fantasy Hockey Cheat Sheet: Top DraftKings NHL DFS Picks, Lineup Strategy for May 5

Neil Parker gives his top NHL picks and lineup advice for Wednesday’s fantasy hockey slate on DraftKings, which starts at 7:00 p.m. ET.

It’s a busy nine-game slate in the NHL on Wednesday, and the Avalanche and Blues are the two largest favorites standing out on DraftKings Sportsbook. Additionally, there’s a potentially heated matchup between the Capitals and Rangers after the extra-curricular events in their game on Monday. It’s also worth noting that the Wild and Golden Knights combined for 11 goals in their Monday meeting, so another high-scoring affair could be in store. Here’s a look at the fantasy landscape ahead of Wednesday’s NHL action on DraftKings.

Top Line Stacks

Avalanche at Sharks

Gabriel Landeskog ($7,300) - Nathan MacKinnon ($9,200) - Mikko Rantanen ($8,600)

The Sharks have allowed the third most goals per game this season, and MacKinnon, Rantanen and Landeskog have already combined for 11 tallies and 19 helpers through seven games against San Jose. Additionally, the trio has recorded 6.08 goals per 60 minutes while also generating 19.37 high-danger scoring chances per 60.

Blues vs. Ducks

Jordan Kyrou ($3,800) - Robert Thomas ($2,900) - Mike Hoffman ($5,200)

There’s potential for St. Louis’ third line to be sneaky Wednesday. The trio has clicked for a high-end 6.73 goals per 60 minutes this season, and they also provide coverage to both power-play units. Additionally, it’s likely they log easier on-ice matchups than the top two lines. Anaheim isn’t a daunting opponent, either. The Ducks have allowed exactly 3.0 goals per game through their past 17 games and only won five times during the skid.

Superstar to Build Around

Filip Forsberg, NSH at CLS ($6,600) - The 26-year-old winger posted a two-point game against Columbus on Monday and offers a high floor through his shot volume. Forsberg ranks 13th in shot attempts per 60 minutes among NHL regulars this season, and there’s probably some positive regression ahead of his current 9.8% shooting percentage considering he posted a 12.8% mark over the previous four seasons. Columbus has also allowed 3.48 goals per game during its active 3-13-5 stretch.

Value on Offense

Eeli Tolvanen, NSH at CLS ($4,700) - Sticking with the favorable matchup for the Predators against Columbus, Tolvanen projects as a solid stack option alongside Forsberg. The 22-year-old rookie has posted a respectable five goals and eight assists through his past 15 games and is locked into a top-line gig while also skating with the No. 1 power-play unit.

Alex Barre-Boulet, TB vs. DAL ($3,900) - While this is a tough matchup with Dallas allowing just 2.54 goals per game, Barre-Boulet remains in a favorable fantasy setup. He’s skating on the top line with Brayden Point ($6,800) and Ondrej Palat ($6,300), so the potential is definitely there for the talented scorer.

Stud Goalies

Juuse Saros, NSH at CLS ($8,300) - There have been a couple underwhelming outings down the stretch for Saros, but his 15-5-1 record, .943 save percentage and 1.88 GAA speak for themselves. As noted, the Blue Jackets are reeling, and they’ve only scored 1.94 goals per game since the beginning of April.

Marc-Andre Fleury, VGK at MIN ($7,900) - After there were 11 goals in Monday’s contest between the Golden Knights and Wild, look for a low-scoring game Wednesday. Additionally, Vegas has surrendered the fewest goals per game in the league and ranks second in penalty-kill percentage, and Fleury boasts an elite .926 save percentage and 2.08 GAA for the campaign.

Value on Defense

Neal Pionk, WPG at CGY ($4,700) - The 25-year-old defenseman snapped a six-game point drought with an assist Monday, and he’s projected to skate with the No. 1 power-play unit again Wednesday. While Calgary’s 80.4% penalty-kill percentage ranks 13th in the league, this salary might be a little low considering Pionk’s 1.6 points per 60 minutes ranks 22nd in the league this season among regular blueliners.

Erik Brannstrom, OTT vs. MON ($2,700) - A low-salary flier, Brannstrom projects to quarterback the No. 1 power-play unit again Wednesday. He’s positioned for success, too. Montreal sports an underwhelming 23rd-ranked 73.1% penalty-kill percentage this season.

Power-Play Defenseman

Roman Josi, NSH at CLS ($7,200) - Another Predator to target in the noted favorable matchup against Columbus, Josi ranks 15th in points and fifth in shot attempts per 60 minutes this season among regular defensemen. He’s also logged 24:20 of ice time per game (3:01 with the man advantage) and is a willing shot blocker with 81 through 46 games, which further highlights his high-floor, high-ceiling fantasy profile.

Justin Faulk, STL vs. ANH ($5,400) - With Torey Krug ($5,000) and Vince Dunn ($4,300) both nursing upper-body injuries, Faulk has taken on an extended role. Faulk has registered two assists, 17 shots and seven blocks through the past four games, and he’s projected to skate with the No. 1 power-play unit again Wednesday. As noted, the Ducks are an opponent to target.
