This is the third game of the four-game series between the Toronto Blue Jays and Oakland Athletics. The Athletics took the first two games of the series. Robbie Ray ($9,600) takes the mound for the Blue Jays while Chris Bassitt ($10,800) goes for the Athletics. The temperature is expected to be around 61 degrees with 66 percent humidity and winds blowing out to center at six mph. DraftKings Sportsbook has the total set at 8.0 runs, with the Athletics favored on the moneyline (-124).

Captain’s Picks

Chris Bassitt ($16,200 CP) - Bassitt has been solid to begin this season. The FIP is 3.63 and he’s only allowed three home runs in about 34 innings. He’s struck out 36 batters while walking 12. The BABIP is at .312 while the LOB% is at 75.9%, so he’s been a little unlucky. The most encouraging thing to his start is the 12.1% swinging-strike rate. He had never had a number above 9.9% in his career, so it could be small sample size talking, but the number is what it is. Bassitt is very tough against righties, as the ISO is .118 and he induces 51.4% ground balls against them. Against lefties? The ISO is .191 while the fly ball rate is 41.8%. You know what though? The Blue Jays have only one lefty in the lineup and his name is Cavan Biggio. Muah ha ha.

Ramon Laureano ($14,100 CP) - Laureano has six home runs and eight stolen bases in 121 plate appearances, so there are multiple paths to fantasy goodies. In his career, he has a .279/.336/.482 slash with a .203 ISO against left-handed pitching. Robbie Ray is allowing a .236 ISO against righties.

Value UTIL Plays

Stephen Piscotty ($5,600) - Piscotty bats seventh in the batting order but he has a career .203 ISO against left-handed pitching. Now, Ray still does strike out 30% of righties and Piscotty has a 27.8% strikeout rate on the season, so this is not a smash spot by any means. That said, the reward can be tremendous. Piscotty has three home runs and one stolen base in 72 plate appearances this season.

Cavan Biggio ($7,200) - Biggio has been awful to start this season as he’s tried to incorporate a more aggressive approach at the plate. The early results have not been pretty as his strikeout rate has increased by 11.4 percentage points, his swinging strike rate has gone up 5.4 percentage points, and his chase rate has spiked 9.6 percentage points from last season. That said, Bassitt is more susceptible to lefties and Biggio has hit both of his home runs this season against right-handed pitching and is posting a .153 ISO.

Fades

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. ($10,600) - Vlad has been amazing to start the season. The slash is a robust .340/.479/.617 with a .277 ISO. It’s been fueled by a .373 BABIP, but even when regression comes, you’re still looking at a .290 average. The plate discipline numbers have been fantastic - 18.5% walk rate and 16.8% strikeout rate. He has seven home runs and one stolen base on the season. As mentioned above, Bassitt is tough against righties, as he throws a sinker 47% of the time to them. In his career, Vlad has a .133 ISO against that pitch with a 75% ground ball rate.

The Outcome

I see a low-scoring affair in this one. Bassitt should be able to control the Blue Jays’ lineup, while Ray could give up a couple of home runs but also rack up plenty of strikeouts. Both bullpens are very good as well. In the first two games of the series, the final scores were 5-4 and 4-1. I see a similar outcome to the 4-1 game.

Final Score: Athletics 4, Blue Jays 2
