Major golf season continues this weekend, as the U.S. Open is set to get started early Thursday morning from Torrey Pines Golf Course in San Diego, California. Bryson DeChambeau will be determined to defend his title after winning fairly convincingly last year, and he’s among the betting favorites heading into the week, with only Jon Rahm ahead of him. DeChambeau is one of three golfers — along with Dustin Johnson and Xander Schauffele — who are listed at +1500, while Rahm is up at +1050. Many of the world’s best golfers come in just behind the top group, and it should make for an extremely exciting and competitive weekend, as is usual for major tournaments.

Jon Rahm is the favorite and Bryson DeChambeau is the reigning U.S. Open champion, but Brooks Koepka is the most popular golfer this week at +1900 — both in terms of bets and handle. Koepka has been erratic throughout 2021, missing the cut in six of his last ten tournaments. In the four tournaments where he made the cut, however, Koepka has finished with a win and two runner-up positions, and one of those was just a few weeks ago at the PGA Championship. While Koepka may not be as reliable as some other top players, it’s clear that he possesses the talent to win on any given week, and DraftKings bettors are optimistic that he’ll be able to put it together at the U.S. Open.
The first round leader market is a little all over the place this week, mostly because Cameron Young has gotten some traction as a long shot at 150-to-1. Justin Rose is also a somewhat surprising name here, leading in both bets and handle, as he’s not someone who’s had an especially great run of first rounds in recent tournaments. Rose has been pretty solid overall lately, however, with two top 10s and a top 20 in his last four events. He also had a standout performance in the first round of the Masters back in April. Perhaps that Masters showing is what’s giving bettors confidence here, as Rose ended Thursday at Augusta with a four-shot lead before ultimately winding up in seventh place at the end of the weekend.
Koepka is a popular bet in the top five market, but DraftKings bettors are sticking with some more consistent golfers to a larger extent. Xander Schauffele and Jon Rahm, in particular, are getting a lot of traction here, but the surprising name from this list is Phil Mickelson at only 11-to-1. Mickelson is obviously a household name, but he’s far from consistent and his recent win at the PGA Championship was actually his first top five finish in the previous 15 months. Nonetheless, winning the most recent major tournament is going to leave an impression on many bettors, so Phil’s popularity this week does make sense from that perspective. He’s among the most popular bets for the U.S. Open across the board.
