Week 7 could bring back one of the biggest names in fantasy football. We factor Saquon Barkley into our Week 7 running back rankings for standard leagues.

Author’s Note: 10/19/19 8:30 am.: We’ve updated our standard running back rankings once more to address the Friday injury reports and we’ve removed the Thursday night players. The big news is that Alvin Kamara is out and David Johnson is a game time decision. Latavius Murray and Chase Edmonds have been moved up. Johnson was also iffy last week, but eventually played. Therefore he has been lowered in the rankings with the expectation of a lighter workload. Chris Thompson is out and Wendell Smallwood has been added.

Running back (standard) rankings update 10/17 7:00 pm.

Saquon Barkley looks like a lock to return from his ankle injury in Week 7 as does Todd Gurley. The news is not as good for Alvin Kamara who is battling a high ankle sprain. It seems Latavius Murray may get the start against a tough Chicago Bears defense. Chris Thompson remained sidelined during practices today and remains unranked.

Nick Chubb’s assault on the league resumed in Week 6. The Cleveland back has over 85 yards rushing in each of his last 4 games and added 5 touchdowns over that span. Chubb is on bye in Week 7 and Kareem Hunt’s return nears so it will be interesting to see how each is used as the season closes out.

Week 7 is going to be a tough ride if you’ve been relying on Christian McCaffrey. The Carolina Panthers are on bye as are Cleveland Browns which leaves the aforementioned Nick Chubb unavailable. You’ll also need to find a replacement for James Conner for his bye week after he just had his best game of the season. The good news is that we might get Saquon Barkley back in time for a wonderful matchup against the Arizona Cardinals. The biggest injury concern is Todd Gurley who missed his Week 6 game. Should he not be able to go again, Darrell Henderson Jr. and Malcolm Brown will go up in the rankings. Keep an eye on Chris Thompson’s practice reports as he is dealing with turf toe and could very likely miss Sunday’s game versus the San Francisco 49ers.

I hate to keep picking on Miami, but the Dolphins set up as a great spot for Devin Singletary to breakout. The rookie rusher should be nearing full health and the Dolphins are a mess. You can also give Joe Mixon a look. Jacksonville hasn’t been too difficult to run on and if A.J. Green returns it could open up things for the running game.

We’re still picking on Washington and Miami, but a new team has jumped up to No. 1 for this week. We rank the top D/ST for Week 7.

There have already been a few weeks worth of byes, so we’ll highlight some teams who have the week off: Browns, Steelers, Buccaneers and Panthers.

So with that, let’s welcome a new team to the No. 1 spot in the D/ST rankings — the San Francisco 49ers! What do we have for ‘em, Johnny?! Nothing? Well, OK, we’ll have to work on getting some type of prize for the Niners, but for now let’s look at why they’re at the top.

San Fran gets to face Washington. That’s it. That’s why they’re No. 1.

But seriously, despite the great matchup as the 49ers will look to remain undefeated, San Fran’s defense has been impressive so far this season. The Niners rank second in yards allowed per game (237.4) and second in points allowed per game (12.8). Most of this is thanks to a secondary that has been lights out, anchored by CB Richard Sherman, who is having an All-Pro type of season with two picks and six passes defended. San Fran is allowing just 150.2 passing yards per game and should have no problem vs. Case Keenum this week.

Outside of the top 5, there are a few interesting spots that have sort of a David vs. Goliath feel. The first one is obvious, a Thursday night date between the Chiefs, who are on a losing streak (!) and Broncos, who are on a winning streak (!). Denver is coming off a shutout of the Titans at home and is always tough at Mile High. On the other hand, Kansas City and Patrick Mahomes haven’t been very electric on offense of late, scoring just 43 points over the past two games. Sure, that’s around league average, but mediocre by the Chiefs’ standards. Mahomes is facing some adversity for the first time in his career really, and while it’s one game, he was underwhelming at Denver last season. Mahomes threw for over 300 yards, but just one TD at Mile High in 2018. It’d be a little nutty to stream the Broncos’ D/ST this week, but it’s worth a look in very deep leagues if you’re strapped for a D/ST.

The other game I’m looking at is Saints at Bears. Usually it’s New Orleans’ offense we’re talking about, but with Drew Brees sidelined, it’s just not the same. Still, the Saints have Michael Thomas and Alvin Kamara and those two always need to be accounted for. The Bears will likely get QB Mitch Trubisky back, but the way he was playing prior to a shoulder injury doesn’t change things much for New Orleans’ D/ST, which has been sneaky good this season. The Saints haven’t allowed over 300 total yards in three straight games and have forced four turnovers in that span. I don’t think I need to say much about the Bears D/ST, which is coming off a bye week at is at home vs. Teddy Bridgewater, not a bad spot. Wind in Chicago should shift both offenses to more of a ground attack, which bodes well for both D/ST.

If you’re looking for streaming options, though, here are a few quick hits.

The Lions are at home vs. Kirk Cousins coming off a big letdown on Monday Night Football vs. the Packers.

The Cardinals’ offense looked great vs. the Falcons, because it’s the Falcons. I think going on the road vs. the Giants in potentially poor weather conditions in New Jersey makes the G-Men an appealing option given they haven’t played since last Thursday night.

The other New York team is playing on MNF vs. the rival Patriots. The Jets have some momentum coming off their first win of the season, they’re at home, and their D/ST actually returned some value last time vs. New England, scoring a defensive TD on a fumble recovery. The Pats’ offense is also dealing with a lot of injuries.

Well, that just about does it from us for this week. You stay classy, fantasy football community. Good luck!

Need some last minute start/sit advice? Fantasy points projections can help, and we’ve got them for Week 6 Monday Night Football.

The Green Bay Packers host the Detroit Lions on Monday Night Football to close out Week 6. The Lions are a bit of a surprise to open the season, while the Packers have ridden a strong run game and stout defense to the top of the NFC North. This is a huge one for both teams following the Minnesota Vikings own win on Sunday.

Your fantasy football lineups are mostly settled, but you might have one or two remaining questions whose answers might be the difference between winning and losing. If you’re playing some DraftKings Showdown, we’ve got lineup strategy and you’ll have your lineup settled by kickoff.

However, if you’re in a traditional fantasy football league, there is less work to be done. If you were waiting for T.J. Hockenson news, the Lions rookie tight end appears set to play. Unfortunately, we already know that Packers wide receiver Davante Adams will be sidelined with a turf toe injury. Meanwhile, the Packers welcome back Jamaal Williams following a Week 4 concussion.

Matchups are key, but it helps to see what the analytics are saying about potential performances. Looking at ESPN fantasy projections for season-long leagues (1/2 PPR setting), Aaron Jones is viewed as likely to build on his big Week 5, while Kenny Golladay is viewed optimistically against the Packers solid pass defense.

I like the Lions chances tonight, in part because Matthew Stafford is playing some solid football. It should be a close one, and it could come down to whether the Packers or Lions defense has the bigger game. Regardless, here are Week 6 MNF projections to help you further improve your fantasy chances!

The Broncos apparently have gotten more good news on wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders. He left Sunday’s Week 6 game at halftime with a knee injury, but Ian Rapoport is hearing the team is optimistic Sanders will be able to play on Thursday Night Football against the Broncos. The knee injury got him on the practice participation report all last week, and he sufficiently aggravated it that he needed to shut it down for the second half of the game. The team will produce practice participation reports Monday through Wednesday, so we’ll find out more as those arrive.

Emmanuel Sanders injury update 8:57 p.m.

The Broncos have gotten some good news on wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders. He was ruled out at halftime with a knee injury, but the team does not believe it is a serious injury, according to NFL Network reporter James Palmer. They face the Chiefs on Thursday, and Palmer is reporting the short week is not a concern.

The Denver Broncos are holding off the Tennessee Titans, but they’ll have to close out the game with one of their top offensive weapons. Wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders has been ruled out with a knee injury. The news came when the team returned for the second half after Sanders had three targets resulting in one reception for zero yards.

Early in the fourth quarter, Courtland Sutton leads the Brocnos with two receptions for 53 yards, followed by Royce Freeman who has five receptions for 42 yards. DeSean Hamilton has two receptions for 25 yards, and is the receiver who will see the biggest uptick in opportunities if Sanders misses any time.

Sanders entered the game with 24 receptions for 307 yards and two touchdowns.

Lions tight end T.J. Hockenson was listed as questionable, but has been cleared to play on Monday Night Football. We break down the fantasy implications.

The Detroit Lions face the Green Bay Packers, and Detroit expects to have rookie tight end T.J. Hockenson back in action. Hockenson suffered a concussion in Week 4. The team had a bye in Week 5, and he worked his way back to practice this week. He was limited at Thursday practice, then a full participant on Friday and Saturday and listed as questionable for Monday. The Lions announced on Sunday that he had been formally cleared through the concussion protocol and was removed from the injury report.

Hockenson set a rookie tight end record when he debuted with six receptions for 131 yards and a touchdown. He was quiet the next two weeks, catching two passes for eight yards. In Week 4, he had three receptions for 27 yards and a touchdown before suffering the concussion trying to hurdle a defender.

Fantasy football analysis, Lions TE T.J. Hockenson

The Lions and Packers are squaring off on Monday, so you’ve likely already made your start/sit decisions. If you rolled the dice on Hockenson playing, things worked out for you. If not, if he comes out of this game unscathed then you can plan on slotting him back next week. You can expect inconsistent performances from the talented rookie, but he has a ton of upside. He’s not a must-start, but considering how bad the tight end position is, he’s worth a roll of the dice most weeks.

The Steelers won, but Hunter Henry fantasy owners have to be excited after Week 6. The tight end returned from injury in a big way. We break down the fantasy football implications.

It’s been a long road back for Hunter Henry over the past two seasons, but he came back in a big way. Henry returned from a Week 1 tibia fracture to lead the Los Angeles Chargers with eight receptions for 100 yards and two touchdowns. Alas, it was not enough as the Pittsburgh Steelers beat LA by a final score of 24-17.

Henry missed most of the 2018 season with a torn ACL. He returned for the playoffs and looked ready to compete as potentially one of the top ten tight ends in 2019. However, in Week 1 he suffered the knee fracture that sidelined him for just over a month. He returned to full team practice this past week, and it was an impressive return for him on Sunday Night Football.

The tight end position is a particularly weak one, with little consistent depth after the top couple tiers. Henry’s performance moves him quickly into a top ten option. And considering he’s only owned in 48.7 percent of fantasy leagues, there’s a decent chance he might be available in your league.

The other notable bits of news were injuries. Steelers running back James Conner suffered a quadricep that cost him a sizable chunk of the fourth quarter. Chargers wide receiver Mike Williams suffered what appeared to be a leg injury just before the two minute warning. Neither returned after their injuries.

The Steelers improve to 2-4 with the win, while the Chargers drop to 2-4. The Steelers have a bye next week, while the Chargers travel to face the Tennessee Titans.

The Titans have all sorts of problems. They’ve benched Marcus Mariota for Ryan Tannehill, but we’ll see if it changes anything.

The Tennessee Titans is struggling to get going and so the coaching staff finally made a change in Week 6. Head coach Mike Vrabel benched Marcus Mariota in the third quarter and replaced him with Ryan Tannehill. Mariota was 7 of 18 for 63 yards and two interceptions at the time of the benching.

Fantasy football analysis, Titans QBs Marcus Mariota, Ryan Tannehill

It’s been an up and down season for Mariota. It’s unlikely he was getting many starts in traditional fantasy football or DFS contests. He has two games with three touchdowns — at Cleveland in Week 1 and at Atlanta in Week 4 — but his accuracy has been all over the place. He’s alternate high 50s and high 60s in completion percentage, and clearly the coaching staff has had it for the time being.

It’s hard to assess what this means for fantasy football purposes. Tannehill isn’t a particularly good quarterback, so this isn’t an upgrade — and yet who knows if it’s actually a downgrade given what we’ve seen of Mariota this year. It’s just a messy situation for now and Derrick Henry is really the only viable offensive fantasy option for the time being.

Cowboys WR Amari Cooper suffered a quad injury and might not return. We break down the fantasy football implications.

Amari Cooper status update, 6:25 p.m.

The Cowboys have officially ruled out Amari Cooper from returning to Sunday’s game, per Kimberly Jones. He suffered a quadricep injury, likely aggravating the injury that landed him on the weekly injury report. Tavon Austin and Michael Gallup are the team’s leading receivers.

The Dallas Cowboys are trailing the New York Jets early, and their degree of difficulty just increased. Wide receiver Amari Cooper suffered a quadricep injury and left the game. He has been announced as questionable to return, but is unlikely to return, according to team beat writer Clarence Hill. When Dak Prescott was talking to his receivers after a recent drive, Cooper was not among them, according to Hill.

Fantasy football analysis, Cowboys wide receivers

Cooper’s absence means more work for Michael Gallup, Randall Cobb, and Jason Witten. Devin Smith will get more snaps, but remains behind those three pass catchers. And of course, we know that the Cowboys are likely to lean even more on Ezekiel Elliott. Tony Pollard will get some opportunities, but this could become a huge Zeke game until we find out more about Cooper’s status.

The Cowboys face the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday Night Football in Week 7 and then have a bye week.
