Week 9 Thursday Night Football had it all, as Jimmy Garoppolo threw four touchdowns, Emmanuel Sanders hit 100 yards receiving while Kenyan Drake topped 100 yards rushing.

The San Francisco 49ers held off the Arizona Cardinals on Thursday Night Football to open Week 9, keeping their perfect record intact and move to 8-0. The 49ers won 28-25 on the arm of Jimmy Garoppolo, as he played the best game of his career. The Cardinals drop to 3-5-1 on the season.

Gambling Results

The 49ers came up short of covering the -10.5 line, dropping to 5-3 against the spread, while the Cardinals improved their ATS to 6-3 on the season. The 43-point over hit with the help of Kyler Murray putting together three touchdown drives over 70 yards against a tenacious 49ers defense.

Fantasy Performances

Garoppolo put together a stellar real-life and fantasy game as he completed 28-of-37 passes for 317 yards and four touchdowns. The Cardinals pass defense isn’t good, but Garoppolo had thrown nine touchdowns through seven games and hadn’t topped 300 yards, as his team won through running the ball and defense. This was an eye-opening game for anyone who doubted Garoppolo could take over.

Garoppolo might not have been the biggest surprise though, as freshly acquired Kenyan Drake ran all over the 49ers, carrying the ball 15 times for 110 yards and a touchdown and catching all four of his targets for 52 more yards after being with the team for just a handful of days. He got the start due to Chase Edmonds and David Johnson both out with injuries, but his performance will be hard to dismiss by Kliff Kingsbury and his staff.

Another newly acquired player put up big numbers, but this was for the 49ers, as Emmanuel Sanders caught 7-of-9 targets for 112 yards and a touchdown. There is no doubt who the No. 1 wide receiver in San Francisco is now. His main competition for targets will continue to be George Kittle, who also had a strong fantasy day with 6-of-8 receptions for 79 yards and a touchdown. Kittle finally has some competition, but the two will likely see enough work as the top dogs to keep a good fantasy upside.

Kyler Murray turned an okay day int a good fantasy day when he hit speedster Andy Isabella for an 88-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter to bring the Cardinals within three points. For the game, Murray completed 17-of-24 passes for 241 yards and two touchdowns while rushing five times for 34 yards. Despite some rough patches against this stout defense, Murray persevered and played a clean game, giving his team a chance to take out an undefeated team.

The biggest disappointment was Tevin Coleman, who was coming off a huge four-touchdown game in Carolina, only to be stifled by a not-great Cardinals defense. He finished with 12 carries for 23 yards and caught 2-of-4 targets for 13 yards. His counterpart, Matt Breida, who had an ankle injury and was considered questionable, ran the ball 15 times for 78 yards and caught both his targets for 14 yards. Coleman would have likely seen more work if he had been more efficient, but Breida was the superior player on Thursday night. They will continue to split work.

Injuries

George Kittle had an early scare as a defender hit his knee with his helmet, putting Kittle on the ground in obvious pain. He shook it off to truck the whole Cardinals defense on a touchdown catch and run, but he wasn’t 100 percent for the rest of the game. It’s likely a good thing that San Francisco will get extra rest with the 49ers next game coming on Monday night.

In Week 10, the 49ers head back to San Francisco to take on the Seahawks on Monday night, while the Cardinals travel to take on the Buccaneers.

Tevin Coleman comes off a huge Week 8 fantasy display to face the Cardinals on Thursday night. Can he keep up his big numbers?

49ers running backs recap

The 49ers ground game was not huge in Week 9, but it had its moments. Matt Breida led the team with 15 rushes for 78 yards and added two receptions for 14 yards. Tevin Coleman had 12 rushes for 23 yards and added two receptions for 13 yards. Raheem Mostert rushed once for a two-yard loss. Jeff Wilson had one reception for two yards.

Matt Breida, Raheem Mostert game status update

The 49ers will have Breida and Mostert ACTIVE for Week 9 TNF. Both were questionable, but the 49ers will have their full contingent of running backs. Coleman remains a strong start with Breida as his primary complement. Breida has some starting value, while Mostert and Jeff Wilson do not have value. The one concern is Wilson vulturing some touchdowns away from the others, although that clearly was not a problem for Coleman in Week 8!

The Panthers had no answer for Tevin Coleman in Week 8, as he rushed 11 times for 105 yards and three touchdowns while catching both of his targets for 13 yards and yet another touchdown. His 13 touches were his fewest since his first game back from an ankle injury, but that didn’t matter, as he torched Carolina for 40.8 DraftKings points.

During that game both Matt Breida and Raheem Mostert suffered injuries but coach Kyle Shanahan said on Wednesday that he believes both will suit up for Thursday night.

Fantasy Football Analysis, San Francisco RB Tevin Coleman

The Cardinals are a matchup that opposing running backs shouldn’t be wary. Statistically they have been better against the run than the pass, as they rank fourth-worst in passing yards allowed and tenth-worst in total yards allowed to running backs. But there isn’t much distinction between the two, as they are poor against both. Over their last six games they’ve given up 100+ yards to Latavius Murray, Devonta Freeman, Joe Mixon, and Christian McCaffrey while allowing seven touchdowns to running backs during that span.

Coleman’s only downside for fantasy has been his split in work with Matt Breida but the 49ers also run the ball more than any other team with 38.8 attempts per game. And this week, they are 10-point favorites in Arizona, meaning they should be set up to run all game long without being forced to push the ball through the air.

Coleman’s usage last week would have been better if he hadn’t closed the door on any chance of a Panther’s comeback by pitting four touchdowns on the board, so we should look toward his recent usage for are projections. In his three games before Week 8, he had 16, 20 and 22 touches. And in Week 7 he had his highest snap percentage at 66 percent while Breida was at 27 percent.

Coleman is the lead back on a team that will run the ball all day if they have the chance and they should have that chance on Thursday night. He won’t score four touchdowns again but as the no-doubt goal line back, I expect a touchdown and a healthy workload to get him above 100 total yards.

Traditional Fantasy Start/Sit Recommendation

Start.

DraftKings DFS Recommendation

Coleman has the most upside of any running back going in this Cardinals matchup. He also ranks seventh in my PPR rankings, so his $5,500 price tag on the Thursday through Monday contests looks like a nice value. Would it be better for Coleman if Breida and Mostert were out this week, sure, but this matchup sets up extremely well for Coleman. We also can’t count on his backups to take on as much work if they aren’t at 100 percent.

In the Thursday Night Showdown, Coleman has the highest upside of any player going and makes for the safest play in the captain’s spot. Fading him in tournaments is risky and would likely take a series of unfortunate events to pay off.

Thursday night football pits the 49ers against the Cardinals. Is Jimmy Garoppolo worth starting in fantasy football this week? We give you the answer.

Jimmy Garoppolo performance update

Garoppolo finished the game throwing for 317 yards and a single game career-high four touchdowns. He finished the game with 31.88 DKFP. We broke down his performance here.

In Carolina last Sunday, Jimmy Garoppolo played a solid game, completing 18-of-22 passes for 175 yards, two touchdowns and one interception in a 51 to 13 blowout. If you didn’t watch the game and started Garoppolo, you might have been ready to collect a whole gob of points from your quarterback after his team put up a 50 burger, but alas, the 49ers rushed for five touchdowns and over 200 yards while their franchise quarterback handed the ball off.

Garoppolo finished the week as QB19 in fantasy and right now he ranks 27th in fantasy points per game for quarterbacks. The addition of Emmanuel Sanders should help, but an efficient running game and dominant defense will continue to limit his upside.

Fantasy Football Analysis, San Francisco QB Jimmy Garoppolo

So far, Arizona has allowed the third-most fantasy points to quarterbacks, with big games to Matthew Stafford, Lamar Jackson, Kyle Allen, Matt Ryan, and Drew Brees. They rank 27th in DVOA against the pass and 26th against the run so that they can be beaten through the air or on the ground, and that’s where Garoppolo’s numbers face their most significant obstacle this week. Will the Cardinals be able to score and stop the run enough to push Garoppolo to throw more than his 27.1 times per game, which ranks 31st in the league?

The Cardinals offense is uptempo but still ranks 20th in points scored per game, and the 49ers are favored by 10-points, and they have the No. 1 defense in the league. That doesn’t doom Garoppolo, as his team should score points, and in turn, he will have opportunities to put up fantasy stats around the goal line. The trouble has been, the 49ers have thrown the ball 30 times compared to running the ball 50 times once in the red zone this season. If you take that down to inside the ten-yard line, the ratio is 15 to 27, and inside the five, it’s nine to 16.

I believe Garoppolo can put up good numbers in this game, but the odds are that he won’t be needed to do much more than hand the ball off. He is a borderline call this week, as there are three useful starters out due to byes, with Drew Brees, Matt Ryan, and Jared Goff taking a week off, and the Cardinals are a good matchup. If you need him, he shouldn’t kill you, but his upside is low.

Traditional Fantasy Start/Sit Recommendation

Sit.

DraftKings DFS Recommendation

With his ceiling low this week, Garoppolo won’t be on my DraftKings radar except in Showdown games. When putting a Showdown team together, it will be hard not to take into account Tevin Coleman’s role in the offense, especially with injuries to Raheem Mostert and Matt Breida possibly narrowing that role. Garoppolo’s upside is likely linked to Coleman and whoever backs him up, as short passes with big yards after the catch are in his wheelhouse, but so far, he’s targeted running backs 39 times to 56 targets for tight ends and 91 to wide receivers. The good news is that George Kittle is set up for success this week against the Cardinals awful tight end defense and he is likely the key to a strong fantasy performance for Garoppolo. Stacking Kittle and Garoppolo will likely be a chalky pairing, but one that has a good chance of hitting for the Showdown.

Kyler Murray always has good upside due to his rushing ability, but he is riskier than Garoppolo due to his suspect offensive line and the 49ers No. 1 in adjusted sack rate ranking. We want to go for upside in Showdowns, but even Murray’s upside takes a big hit against the 49ers.

The 49ers won their eighth straight, and Jimmy Garoppolo was a big reason why. We break down the fantasy football implications for their Week 9 win.

The San Francisco 49ers beat the Arizona Cardinals in Week 9 Thursday Night Football, and the game was keyed by Jimmy Garoppolo. He has had some solid enough performances this season, but he was downright dominant in making some huge throws in the 49ers victory.

Garoppolo also paid out big for fantasy football and DFS players. He threw for a season-high 317 yards and had his first career four-touchdown performance. For DraftKings Showdown players, Jimmy G led all performers with 31.88 DKFP.

Garoppolo has been up and down this season, so seeing him break out — even against a shaky Cardinals defense — was a big deal. It does not make him a weekly must start, but he has some choice matchups moving forward. The 49ers face the Seattle Seahawks in Week 10 on Monday Night Football followed by a home game against the Cardinals. Both line up as strong opportunities for Garoppolo to build on this game.

It gets a little more difficult after that, with the 49ers hosting Green Bay, and then traveling to Baltimore and New Orleans. That New Orleans game is the first week of most playoff weeks. However, if you advance to your semifinals, you get Garoppolo vs. an abysmal Atlanta Falcons defense. There’s some value to be had in the next month and a half.

49ers tight end George Kittle took a helmet to the knee on the team’s first offensive drive. He appears to be getting ready to go back into the game.

George Kittle status update, end of game

The 49ers finished off the Cardinals in the fourth quarter, edging them out 28-25 as they ran out the clock in the final minutes. It is notable however that George Kittle was not on the field during the final drive. He is a great blocking tight end, to go along with being a dominant pass catcher. The fact that he did not play is of some concern. The 49ers have 11 days until their next game, a Monday Night Football contest with the Seahawks, so Kittle has time to get well.

George Kittle status update, halftime

49ers tight end George Kittle had a solid first half with five receptions for 56 yards and a touchdown, but he is in some measure of pain. His final catch of the half got the 49ers down to the 1 yard line, and he had to grab a lineman’s jersey to pull himself up. It’s safe to say the 49ers will take a look at his knee during halftime.

Post halftime update: After halftime, Shanahan told the TNF sideline reporter that he is hoping Kittle can gut his way through the second half and get to the layoff the 49ers have after this. They play on Monday Night Football next week, meaning 11 days until their next game.

Update: He just scored a 30-yard touchdown, so I think everything’s OK.

Editor’s update: George Kittle returned to the field on the 49ers next drive. He appears to be good to go moving forward.

San Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle suffered an injury to his knee in Week 9 Thursday Night Football. Chandler Jones hit him in the knee with his helmet while Kittle was blocking on a Tevin Coleman run. Kittle was able to walk off under his own power, but he was limping and went into the medical tent to get looked at.

Kittle has since left the tent and is working to stretch out his knee, and is doing some running on the sideline. The 49ers offense punted, so we will have to wait and see what happens next time they return to the field. Ross Dwelley is the 49ers primary backup tight end, with Levine Toilolo dealing with a groin injury, according to Chris Biderman.

We break down the last minute fantasy football decisions you have to make with Week 9 TNF inactives due in a few hours.

The NFL kicks off Week 9 this evening, and we get a big NFC West matchup between the San Francisco 49ers and Arizona Cardinals in Glendale, Arizona. Thursday Night Football has brought some crazy NFC West finishes, so this should be a good one to watch.

We had some fantasy football injury questions coming out of the final injury report, but it appears we’re getting some answers. David Johnson will not play, which means Kenyan Drake is in line for a heavy workload. Matt Breida and Raheem Mostert appear on track to play, but likely will remain behind Tevin Coleman in the 49ers pecking order.

Inactives are due at 6:50 p.m., but there will be news earlier in the day as we prepare for the game. If you’re trying to figure out your fantasy football lineups, this information is critical to getting the right players in the right spots. There’s plenty of time for the rest of your fantasy lineups, but many of us have some last minutes decisions to make on Thursday evening. And if you’re looking to play some DraftKings Showdown, make sure and combine this info with our last minute strategy piece.

We’ll provide updates on injuries, key start/sit decisions, and more leading up to the 8:20 p.m. kickoff.

Cardinals right tackle Justin Murray out

The Cardinals have deactivated right tackle Justin Murray and moved Justin Pugh over from guard to tackle to replace him. This is Pugh’s first game at tackle since his Giants days (2013-2017). This makes life a little more difficult for Kyler Murray, and certainly doesn’t improve the ground opportunities for Kenyan Drake.

Marquise Goodwin a surprise inactive for 49ers

The trade for Emmanuel Sanders is having ripple effects on the 49ers wide receiver depth. veteran Marquise Goodwin is a healthy scratch. That leaves Sanders, Deebo Samuel, and Dante Pettis as the three primary options. Kendrick Bourne and Richie James will also see looks. Sanders is the only one with consistent fantasy value for now.

Matt Breida, Raheem Mostert ACTIVE for Week 9

No surprise from the 49ers as running backs Matt Breida and Raheem Mostert are active for Thursday Night Football. Tevin Coleman will get the start at running back, with Breida as the primary backup. Mostert will get some work as will Jeff Wilson, Coleman and Breida are the two best fantasy options. Breida is a step below Coleman, but still solid against the Cardinals.

David Johnson INACTIVE for Week 9

As expected, Cardinals running back David Johnson will not play on Thursday Night Football in Week 9. He and Chase Edmonds will not be playing. That leaves Kenyan Drake, Zach Zenner, and Alfred Morris as the primary backs. Drake seems the safe bet to get most of the work tonight. He’s not a great start given the nature of the 49ers defense, but there’s some volume potential at least.

Matt Breida, Raheem Mostert expected to play

Breida (ankle) and Mostert (knee) were listed as questionable on the final injury report. Thursday afternoon, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported that Breida felt good this morning and is going to play tonight. Adam Schefter followed up by saying Mostert will play as well.

If both backs are active tonight, Breida is the better fantasy option as he is ahead of Mostert on the depth chart behind Tevin Coleman. That being said, Breida is a risky start. This is a solid matchup for the 49ers running backs, but Breida’s recent history has featured repeated aggravations of ankle injuries. He’s a strong start this week if healthy, but be wary with the injury.

David Johnson not expected to play

Early Thursday morning, Adam Schefter reported that Johnson is not expected to play in Thursday Night Football. Johnson missed last week with an ankle injury, but unlike Chase Edmonds, was not ruled out for Week 9 when the final injury report came out. Head coach Kliff Kingsbury said he would be a game-time decision. It would appear things did not come around as hoped. In the absence of Johnson and Edmonds, recently acquired Kenyan Drake is likely to get the start. Zach Zenner and Alfred Morris will probably get some work, but Drake is likely to be the primary back on Thursday.

Matt Breida and Raheem Mostert both suffered injuries in Week 8, what are their fantasy outlooks for Week 9 on TNF?

Matt Breida, Raheem Mostert injury status update

Breida and Mostert are both ACTIVE for Week 9 Thursday Night Football. Breida is the stronger fantasy play behind Tevin Coleman.

Both Matt Breida and Raheem Mostert suffered injuries in Week 8 against the Panthers. Breida picked up an ankle injury and Mostert a knee injury. The good news for the 49ers is that coach Kyle Shanahan says he expects both to be available for the game, but both will receive evaluations Thursday morning.

Usually, when a coach says he “expects” someone to play, they end up playing. And Breida has played through multiple injuries in the past, so it wouldn’t be surprising if he does again on Thursday.

Fantasy football analysis, San Francisco RBs Matt Breida, Raheem Mostert

If coach Shanahan is correct in his assessment, Breida would again back up Tevin Coleman and have fantasy value in a run-heavy scheme and likely positive game script. There is always a chance of an in-game re-aggravation to his ankle injury, but if he plays the whole game, he is worth a fantasy start. The 49ers have been consistent in giving two running backs the bulk of the touches since Coleman returned from his ankle injury four weeks ago. If Breida is healthy, Mostert and Jeff Wilson would again have sparing usage.

If Breida can’t go, Mostert becomes a useful fantasy play, much like Breida. The 49ers run the ball on average 38 times a game, and as 10-point favorites, that should happen again this week. Coleman has topped out at 22 rushing attempts in a game this season, which is a good number but still leaves room for others to work behind a strong offensive line in a good matchup.

And finally, if both Mostert and Breida were to sit, Jeff Wilson would get a big enough bump to have some flex appeal as well. After Coleman’s four-touchdown game last week, he’ll be riding high and healthy, so he should see his max opportunities, but that would also mean the backup running back will be in the range of 10-14 touches and could see mop-up duty. Don’t be afraid to play the 49ers No. 2 back this week.

The Cardinals are ruling Chase Edmonds out for Week 9, but are not prepared to do so with David Johnson. We break down the fantasy football implications.

David Johnson game status

The Cardinals announced their Week 9 inactives, and Johnson will be INACTIVE for Thursday Night Football against the 49ers. He and Chase Edmonds are both out for the game, leaving Kenyan Drake, Zach Zenner, and Alfred Morris as the active running back options. The recently acquired Drake seems to be the most viable option of the three.

Editor’s update: David Johnson is not expected to play on Thursday.

The Arizona Cardinals have formally ruled out running back Chase Edmonds for Week 9 Thursday Night Football against the San Francisco 49ers. Head coach Kliff Kingsbury told the media on Wednesday Edmonds is out and David Johnson is “still working through it,” according to beat writer Darren Urban.

Kingsbury is planning on a running back by committee that will involve recently acquired Kenyan Drake, and Zach Zenner and Alfred Morris. Johnson will be a game-time decision, according to Pro Football Talk.

Fantasy football analysis: Cardinals RBs Chase Edmonds, Kenyan Drake, David Johnson

Zenner and Morris hold no fantasy value. Drake is the most talented of the three, but would be more of a desperation play given he’ll have had a playbook for no more than 72 hours heading into the game. The big question is what happens if Johnson is active. The 49ers run defense has dominated this season, giving up the second fewest points to opposing running backs. Johnson is usually a must start, but if he actually is active, he might be worth sitting for this game.
