Reid Fowler previews The CJ Cup @ Shadow Creek and gives his picks for your DraftKings PGA TOUR fantasy golf lineups.

The PGA TOUR will stay in Las Vegas for The CJ Cup @ Shadow Creek. The course will play as a par 72, measuring 7,527 yards, and it will be played on bentgrass greens this week. The tournament is a no-cut event.

STRATEGY

Recently held at Nine Bridges in South Korea, The CJ Cup will move to Shadow Creek for a one-year stint due to COVID-19. The course played host to the first “Tiger vs. Phil” match, where Phil Mickelson beat Tiger Woods in a playoff. Shadow Creek was initially designed by Tom Fazio in 1989 and then renovated by him in 2008. Fazio called it a “total site manipulation,” where he added rolling hills, canyons, and water hazards that will be in play on nine holes. The green complexes will have tiers and plenty of undulation, so distance control with the irons will be vital, especially at a slight elevation. Other Tom Fazio courses played on the PGA TOUR over the last five years are Corales Golf Course (Corales Puntacana Resort and Club Championship), Conway Farms Golf Club (2015, 2017 BMW Championship) and Eagle Point Golf Club (2017 Wells Fargo Championship).

The course is far from a desert layout with tree-lined fairways, peaks and valleys, along with waterfalls and creeks that wind throughout the course. Shadow Creek feels like it should play more like a resort course, albeit a long one. The once ultra-exclusive club features four par 4s between 450 and 500 yards and one at 507 yards. The course will also have a par 5 over 600 yards. Like TPC Summerlin, the course will play a little shorter with altitude, and golfers who played last week should have a slight advantage already having played in these conditions. Patrick Cantlay ($9,800), Collin Morikawa ($9,500), Hideki Matsuyama ($9,200), Scottie Scheffler ($8,800), and Sungjae Im ($8,700) are a handful of golfers making the short trip.

The tournament will only have 78 golfers in the field with no cut. Similar to WGC and the last two FedExCup playoff events, finishing position will be vital for success. Leaning towards golfers with high upside and experience playing in smaller, no-cut events might be prudent.

Justin Thomas ($10,800)

We should always consider Thomas in every tournament he tees it up in, but especially when others inside the top five are in the field. Roster percentage should disperse at the top, especially at a “new” course, leaving Thomas potentially under-rostered. We should be leaning on Strokes Gained: Tee-to-Green when playing a new course, and no one has been better there than Thomas since the restart, gaining an average of 6.3 strokes over his last ten tournaments. Thomas finished second at the TOUR Championship while losing a little over three strokes on the greens. He then followed it up a couple of weeks later with a top eight at Winged Foot, where he gained 4.7 strokes putting. Nine of his 13 wins have come in no-cut events, winning The CJ Cup twice (at a different course). Thomas is in the rare camp of golfers who have distance and touch around the greens, which should work well here.

Scottie Scheffler ($8,800)

Few finished last season better than Scheffler, but a positive COVID-19 test derailed his momentum coming into the new season. Scheffler had to miss the U.S. Open via the COVID-19 protocol, and then missed the cut last week by one. He’s lost strokes with his irons in his previous two events, but before that, he gained an average of 3.4 through approach in the five tournaments prior. Accurate and long off-the-tee, Scheffler posses the ball-striking you need to play well here. The four par 5s should be reachable for most of the field, and Scottie ranks inside the top 25 in par 5 scoring since the restart. Scheffler doesn’t make a ton of eagles but can still score, ranking fifth in birdies or better gained over the previous three months. Harris English ($8,600) should also be a consideration in this range. English ranks 13th in Strokes Gained: Tee-to-Green and may go under-rostered with a missed cut last week.

Joaquin Niemann ($7,500)

Niemann finished great last week, gaining just under five strokes tee-to-green. The green complexes will be tricky this week, and very few are better bentgrass putters than Nieman, who ranks seventh over the last two tournaments on this surface. Niemann’s game seems to be rounding into form, and a T12 last week should give him a ton of confidence at a course only 18 miles away from TPC Summerlin. Bubba Watson ($7,300) and Corey Conners ($6,900) have been stellar tee-to-green and should garner some consideration in this range as well.

The Field

The CJ Cup @ Shadow Creek is now in its fourth year and with its move to the mainland U.S. for 2020, there’s more big names in the field than usual. <s>Shadow Creek course record holder and world number one Dustin Johnson ($11,100) is here</s>, as is world number two Jon Rahm ($11,300) and world number three Justin Thomas ($10,800). Joining them will be the consistent trio of Rory McIlroy $10,600), Xander Schauffele ($10,300) and Hideki Matsuyama ($9,200), who will all be searching for their first win of 2020 here.

The big news this week is the return of Brooks Koepka ($9,700), who has been on hiatus since after the PGA Championship due to lingering issues with his knee. Koepka has rehabbed for two months now and will be looking to find some consistent form (and health) prior to the Masters in a month. With Koepka here, all of the previous three winners of this event (Thomas has won twice) are in the field.

The Course

Shadow Creek—Las Vegas, Nevada

Par 72, 7527 yards; Greens: Bentgrass

Shadow Creek is a pure Las Vegas creation that has been around since 1990. Designed by Tom Fazio and paid for by Hotel Tycoon Steve Wynn, the venue was exclusively private up until 2000 when it became semi-open to MGM guests at $500 a round. The venue has only been seen in competition to the public once, when Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods had their first version of “The Match” on it in 2019.

By all accounts, Shadow Creek is a tough Par 72 that features a course record of just 66 (after the 2008 renovations), currently held by Dustin Johnson. Even though it’s located in the desert, Shadow Creek is far from a typical desert setup as plenty of trees and streams do line the fairways throughout. Despite being in the desert, creeks and smaller water hazards are strewn throughout the course with water coming into play on nine of the 18 holes here. As a longer Par 72, comparing it to one of the more classic, longer venues we see every year like Muirfield, Quail Hollow or even Augusta National is probably a good starting point.

Like those previously mentioned Par 72’s, Shadow Creek has a handful of shorter Par 5’s which should all present at least some birdie opportunities this week. The shortest Par 5 measures in around 529 yards, while the longest sits at 622 yards so not all of the longer holes will necessarily present eagle opportunities and the longest of the Par 5’s may even play close to even for the week. There is also a driveable Par 4 on the course that plays to just 324 yards, but there’s also five Par 4’s over 450 yards.

The course has been prepped over the last month or so in anticipation of this event so I’d personally expect scoring here to be a little tougher than people expect. Look for conditions similar to what we see at Augusta most years, where birdie opportunities are available on certain holes while, at most of the others, par will remain a solid score.

2020 Outlook: Despite the calendar now moving into late Fall, the weather this week looks great. Highs will be in the high-80’s most of the week while morning lows will be slightly chilly around 60 degrees. The limited field in play for this week’s no cut event will also have more condensed tee times than usual so wave stacking for classic formats on DraftKings isn’t needed. The wind on Thursday is worth keeping an eye on as Thursday is set to be the windiest of the event right now, with p.m. gusts expected in the 12 mph range. The very earliest starters on the first day could have a very slight advantage, although it’s too early to write that in pen.

Recent Form

<s>1. Dustin Johnson</s><s> </s><s>($11,100, Recent finishes: T6-win): </s><s>The world number one is coming off a stretch of play which saw him grab two wins and a runner-up finish over his last four starts. His T6 at the U.S. Open was disappointing (from a long-term perspective) but solid nonetheless and represented his second top 10 in a major in two months.</s>

2. Matthew Wolff ($10,000, Recent finishes: T2-2nd): Wolff was a hard luck loser last week at the Shriners, just a few weeks after also grabbing a second-place finish at the U.S. Open. The 21-year-old has taken his game to the next level consistency-wise and has now posted top five finishes at two major championships in the last two months. There’s few players better than him right now.

3. Xander Schauffele ($10,300, Recent finishes: T5-T2): Schauffele continues to fall just short of the finish line, as he’s yet to grab a trophy in 2020. However, despite that, the number of top 10 results he’s been able to land has been impressive. T5 at the U.S. Open and T10 at the PGA Championship—his record in limited, no-cut events—is hard to top and makes him dangerous once again this week.

4. Sergio Garcia ($8,400, Recent finishes: T43-win): Garcia followed up his win at the Sanderson Farms event (his first on the PGA TOUR since the 2017 Masters) with a T43 at the Shriners birdie-fest. The last result may not jump off the page, but Sergio’s consistency levels are roaring back to life and he could easily jump back in the mix here given his current level of ball striking.

5. Justin Thomas ($10,800, Recent finishes: T8-T2): Thomas remains in the world’s top three in the OWGR. He’s gained two wins in 2020 already and will go searching for his third CJ Cup win this week. Thomas’ T8 at the U.S. Open marked his best ever finish at that event, although it should be noted that he gained over +9 strokes there around and on the greens to accomplish the feat.

DraftKings DFS Strategy

Cash Games: The salaries this week have the top two players in the field very closely ranked and with lots of potential value in this elite field event, <s>starting with Dustin Johnson ($11,100) here seems pretty standard. DJ is coming off a dominating playoff run and finished T6 at the last major—he also holds the course record at Shadow Creek. After DJ, the decisions get a bit tougher</s>, but I like the potential here for big weeks from SungJae Im ($8,700-see below) and Hideki Matsuyama ($9,200). Matsuyama may have missed the cut last week but ranks second in this field in SG:TTG play over the last 50 rounds. Other potential cash game targets for this no-cut event include Joaquin Niemann ($7,500), Russell Henley ($7,100) and Lanto Griffin ($6,300).

Tournaments: We have quite a few of the top players coming in here off larger breaks and could see one or more get off to good starts on this new season. Rory McIlroy ($10,600) likely intrigues me the most from that group. Rory was beginning to look sharper towards the last few events of last season and if he takes a step up with his irons here, he could break that winless streak this week. Rickie Fowler ($8,100) also stands out as a potential bounce-back candidate. He looked fine in the first round of last week and won’t have to worry about getting through a weekend cutline here. Other potential GPP targets here include the likes of Bubba Watson ($7,300-see below), Matt Kuchar ($6,900) and Adam Long ($6,600).

My Pick: SungJae Im ($8,700)

Im has now finished inside the top 30 in three straight starts and posted his best finish ever at a major championship just three weeks ago, when he landed a T22 at Winged Foot. The results may not sound like anything special, but the stats bear out that the South Korean’s ball-striking has gone to another level of late. The winner of the Honda Classic back in March has gained over +2 strokes off the tee in his last three events and even led the field in that stat at the Shriners last week. His approach game—which was lagging badly in the summer—has also looked much better over the last month or so and he’s now gained over +2 on approaches in three of his last four starts.

The only thing holding Im back from contending of late has been sharpness around and on the greens, but the 22-year-old should gain confidence from a solid week around the greens last week where he gained strokes ATG for the first time in four starts. Im challenged on the Asian swing last year and with his new found confidence off the tee, he should be able to take advantage of the longer scoring holes on Shadow Creek—which will certainly demand solid ball-striking to take advantage of. He’s a solid value for me here at under $9K.

My Sleeper: Bubba Watson ($7,300)

Watson hasn’t been seen on the PGA TOUR since the U.S. Open a month ago but his performance at that event and leading up to it should be cause for optimism on his chances this week. Bubba has gained strokes on Approach and Off the Tee now in six of his last seven starts and his numbers in those areas put him up with the elites in this field in terms of ball-striking. Shadow Creek and its unique design, which features plenty of left to right doglegs, should cater to his creativity off the tee and it’s worth noting that Bubba’s best results have often come at more classic venues like Augusta National and Riviera where longer Par 4’s and Par 5’s tend to put more of an emphasis on Off the Tee play.

Bubba’s putting is an every week concern but on a tougher course that weakness should at least be mitigated (a little). The no-cut nature of this event also guarantees us that a Friday putter blow-up won’t sink our lineups. At just $7,300, he makes for a solid mid-tier target this week in big field GPPs on DraftKings.

Reid Fowler provides his top PGA TOUR bets on DraftKings Sportsbook for the CJ Cup @ Shadow Creek.

The CJ Cup, traditionally played at Nine Bridges in South Korea, will be moving to Shadow Creek in Las Vegas, Nev., for a one-year stint. The course hosted the original Tiger vs. Phil match in 2018, but it’s virtually unknown for the most part. The Tom Fazio-designed course measures over 7,500 yards and will feature tree-lined, lush fairways, waterfalls and tiered bentgrass greens.

The past three winners of this tournament in South Korea include Justin Thomas (twice), who hit on +750 and +800, respectively, and Brooks Koepka at +1000 in 2017. The course will be new to most of the 78-player field, and there’s some positive expected value (+EV) plays in a strong field in a no-cut event. Four out of the top five in OWGR are playing, with Dustin Johnson withdrawing on Tuesday after testing positive for COVID-19.

The DJ withdrawal shifted most of the odds and although I still like Justin Thomas at +1000, the “value” is with McIlroy. Rory hasn’t played his best since the restart and he’ll be the first to admit it. His approach was inconsistent, which wasn’t the case between the 2019 TOUR Championship and the 2020 Arnold Palmer Invitational last season when he rattled off five consecutive top-5 finishes and won twice. McIlroy’s game was rounding into form toward the end of last season, finishing with back-to-back top-8s at the TOUR Championship and the U.S. Open, gaining 7.4 strokes tee-to-green at Winged Foot. When Rory is on, his driver sets him apart, even from the world’s best. His putting has improved since the four-week streak of losing on the greens in August, which is a sign his entire game is coming together. Rory’s won multiple no-cut events from WGCs to the TOUR Championship and could be in line for another one this week.

Hopefully, you guys snagged Scottie at +4500 or even at +4100 before the DJ news, but Scheffler is still fair-market value at this number. His missed cut last week was disappointing, but he shot 69-67 en route to missing the weekend by one stroke. Scheffler’s played in two tournaments since testing positive for COVID-19 and should feel back in a routine this week. Three top 5s from the PGA Championship to the TOUR Championship last season is no easy feat, and if the CJ Cup becomes a birdie fest we should want the guy who shot 59 less than two months ago.

Believe it or not, Conners has gained strokes putting in his past two events, which hopefully is a sign for things to come and not an outlier. The ball-striking is elite with Conners, and with limited data to draw from this week, backing ball-strikers may be the prudent strategy. With only 78 players in the field, a top-20 should be in the range of outcomes for Conners, who ranks second in SG: Ball-striking since the restart.

The No. 1 golfer in the world is going to have to start self-isolating.

The PGA Tour announced on Tuesday that Dustin Johnson, the No. 1 golfer in the world, has tested positive for Covid-19. Johnson has withdrawn from the CJ Cup, which was scheduled to start on Thursday in Las Vegas at Shadow Creek.

Johnson last played at the US Open the week of September 20th. He tied for sixth at the event. Prior to that, he closed out the 2019-2020 season winning The Northern Trust, finished second at the BMW Championship, and winning the season-ending TOUR Championship to take home the FedExCup.

Prior to his withdrawal, Johnson was the favorite to win the CJ Cup at +850. Jon Rahm is now the favorite, improving from +1000 to +900 at DraftKings Sportsbook.

Zach Thompson sifts through the golf bargain bin and provides his top value options for The CJ Cup.

The PGA TOUR is staying in Las Vegas for the second straight week after a three-way playoff at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open resulted in Martin Laird claiming his first win in over seven years. After playing at TPC Summerlin last week, this week the Tour shifts to the exclusive Shadow Creek Golf Course. It’s a new venue for this tournament, which usually takes place in South Korea but had to be relocated due to COVID-19.

The field this week will be just 78 players and there will be no cut. Some of the bigger names are back in action for the first time since the U.S. Open as Dustin Johnson ($11,100), Justin Thomas ($10,800), Jon Rahm ($11,300) and Rory McIlroy ($10,600) lead an elite field as players start to get tuned up for The Masters in a month at Augusta. The tournament has only been in existence for three years and Thomas has won twice with Brooks Koepka ($9,700) taking home the win in 2018. Those wins may not help those players on this different course, but it does show the high quality of the players involved this week.

Set your DraftKings fantasy golf lineups here: PGA TOUR $450K Resurgence [$100K to 1st]

Shadow Creek was designed by Tom Fazio and was used for The Match: Tiger vs. Phil in 2018 but has never hosted a tournament like this, so the course data is difficult to come by. What we can say with certainty is that it’s a long course at 7,560 yards that plays as a par 72 with bentgrass greens. Its length puts it right around Quail Hollow’s length but short of Torrey Pines, which is the longest course in the regular rotation.

Fazio also designed Firestone Country Club in Akron and Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, which have recently been stops on the Tour and could provide solid course correlations. Fazio also designed the Corales Golf Course, which hosted an event earlier this season in the Dominican Republic, but not many of these elite players teed it up there.

Like many Fazio designs, Shadow Creek features wide fairways and rolling terrain with average undulations on the greens. The key stats are expected to be Strokes Gained: Approach and Strokes Gained: Around the Green, but it will also be key to have plenty of length off the tee. There are four par 5s and a driveable par 4, so scoring on those holes will be key, favoring players with more distance in their game.

The no-cut nature of this event makes taking a flier on cheaper plays a little less risky since barring injury or withdrawal everyone will play four full rounds. Getting great value plays will be a key along with pinpointing the right superstars to get into your lineup. Let’s take a look at who stands out this week from the options available for $7,500 or under on DraftKings.

Joaquin Niemann, $7,500

Niemann has been playing very well over the past couple of months since his big week at Olympia Fields for the BMW Championship. He was in contention coming down the stretch and ultimately finished T3 to qualify for the TOUR CHAMPIONSHIP the following week. He also posted a T23 at the U.S. Open and put up a solid T13 last week at TPC Summerlin to show he’s still in good form.

Even though the 21-year-old from Chile isn’t the biggest player, he crushes the ball off the tee. He finished just outside the top 25 on the Tour last year in shots gained off the tee and is fourth in driving distance in his limited work this season. His approach game was a little off last week, but he finished 15th in shots gained on approach last season. If his irons are back on point this week, he can definitely go low in this format and has shown he can contend in an elite field.

Bubba Watson, $7,300

Watson also has plenty of length off the tee and has shown he can contend with the top players in the world. He hasn’t teed it up since the U.S. Open, where he posted a T31. He struggled at the beginning of last year but seemed to find good form down the stretch, finishing T18 at THE NORTHERN TRUST and T16 at the BMW Championship.

Since he is a lefty and has such a unique swing, Watson tends to either “fit” a course and always do well or never seems to figure it out. Taking him at a new course like this is high-risk, but it can also be high reward since he has the tools to contend. Watson currently ranks eighth on the season with 1.552 shots games on approach per round, and that is just from his four rounds at the U.S. Open, showing how on-point his approach game was at Winged Foot. If he can have similar success this week, he’ll be a great option to have at under $7.5K.

Mackenzie Hughes, $6,800

Hughes’ stats for this season look ugly at first glance, but it’s important to remember that the only two measured rounds available for him are from his rough week at Winged Foot, where he badly missed the cut at the U.S. Open. He bounced back from that week with a strong showing in Punta Cana, where he finished solo third on that other Fazio-designed course. Since there isn’t shot-tracking data on that course, though, it doesn’t improve his stats at all for this season. If we look back at the 2019-20 season stats, Hughes looks like he could be a good fit here since he ranked in the top 10 in shots gained around the green and top 10 in putting. His weakness is accuracy off the tee, but with wide fairways, there should be some forgiveness at Shadow Creek.

Toward the end of last season, Hughes was on a great roll, producing top-15 finishes at THE NORTHERN TRUST, the BMW Championship and the TOUR Championship. After the restart, Hughes missed the cut in his first event but then reeled off nine straight made cuts with three top-10 finishes even before his third-place finish in the Dominican Republic.

Joohyung Kim, $6,400

Since the event is normally played in Korea, there are extra spots reserved in the field for players from the Korean Tour. One of the players from that group that is sure to get plenty of attention is Kim, who has already been making a name for himself at the young age of 18. Despite his youth, he already has five professional victories internationally, winning three times on the Asian Development Tour and once on the Asian Tour. He also became the youngest player to win on the Korean Tour with his win this past July at the KPGA Gunsan CC Open.

Already this season, Kim has played two events on the PGA Tour with a T67 at the Safeway Open followed by a T33 at the Corales Puntacana Resort & Club Championship, again on that Fazio-designed course. Finding specific stats on the different parts of Kim’s game is a little tricky since many of the events he has played don’t have a lot of tracking data. From the numbers we do have from Asian Tour events in 2019 and in 2020 we can tell he is an above-average putter who can pile up birdies in a hurry. He would have ranked second on the Asian Tour in birdies-per-round if he had enough events to qualify in 2019. While he’s still extremely young, he is a lot of fun to watch and is a player that will be fun to say was in your lineup from early on in his career as he continues to grow and contend.
