The Field

This is another full-field event which will feature a regular cut after Friday’s round. The Houston Open used to be a feature stop on the PGA TOUR as the event directly prior to the Masters in April, but it was moved into the Fall swing two years ago. Now in its second year in its Fall slot, it’s again playing as the warm up to Augusta due to this year’s COVID-adjusted schedule.

With the November Masters providing good motivation for the top players to get in more competitive reps before the year’s last major, this year’s Houston field once again has some bigger names attached to it. Brooks Koepka ($10,600) is back after returning at The CJ Cup two weeks ago, and he was part of the redesign team for this week’s new venue at Memorial Park. Dustin Johnson ($11,500), Hideki Matsuyama ($10,000), and Jason Day ($9,000) are also all in the field here giving it some needed star power after most of the top 50 players skipped last week. Tony Finau ($10,900), Scottie Scheffler ($9,600), Adam Scott ($9,200) and Viktor Hovland ($9,800) round out the top end of this field which features plenty of players who will be at Augusta in a week’s time and will be looking to use a solid result here for a run at the big prize next week.

The Course

Memorial Park Golf Course—Houston, Texas

par 72, 7,432 yards; Greens: Bermuda

This year marks a change in venues for the Houston Open as they are moving on from the Golf Course of Houston and will instead be hosted by Memorial Park Golf Course, a public links course that was recently renovated by the city of Houston and will be hosting this event for the first time since 1963.

The complete redesign of this course was completed in 2019 by Tom Doak, who brought in PGA TOUR pro Brooks Koepka as an advisor. The venue is a pure parkland course but was modified significantly from its old layout. Water is now in play on four holes and natural hazards like ravines now come into play as well. Elevation changes to greens and fairways also occurred while the redesign also decided to eliminate much of the sand that was on the course, as only 19 bunkers now are in play. The course was given a variety of different/new tee boxes as well, allowing the course to set up to play at various lengths, including ultra-long for the pros. If you see previews with different yardage markings this week, this is likely the reason as the course will likely set up longer this week than it ever does for public play.

As for the setup, there have been conflicting reports about how exactly Memorial Park will play but it looks as if it will play as a par 72. From the course’s site, Memorial Park does contain five par 5’s and five par 3’s, making it quite unique from a regular par 72 setup—which generally only features four of those types of holes. Three of the par 5’s do stretch over 570 yards in length so not all of them will necessarily be massive birdie opportunities, but the added length might also play into the hands of bigger hitters. The par 4’s here run the gamut, as there is a driveable par 4 (the 13th), but also four that play well over 450 yards in length.

A lot will depend on how high they set the rough, although with Memorial being a public links course, we likely shouldn’t expect crazy-hard scoring. A solid comparison for this week may be the site of the PGA Championship this year at TPC Harding Park, which was also quite lengthy and was also a public links course in a parkland setting. Memorial will likely offer far more birdie opportunities but could also emphasize good Off the Tee and Tee to Green given its length.

2020 Outlook: It is Texas, so realistically, we should prepare for almost anything. With that said, the forecast for the lead up to the Masters this year looks near perfect. Highs will be in the high-70’s with mostly sunny skies and essentially zero rain in the forecast. Wind can often be a factor in Texas—those who remember the massacre at Valero in 2015 knows this as fact—but it looks like we’re getting a calm Fall in Texas, in that regard. Winds are not expected to rise much past 8-9 mph on the first two days with Thursday looking the calmest of the bunch. We could see gusts approach 12-14 mph on the weekend, with Sunday slated to get the most wind. Early weekend starters could get a small edge for you this weekend in Showdown contests, if that forecast holds, but otherwise don’t expect weather to play much of a factor.

· Griffin was playing for the fifth time in five weeks when he won here last season and the heavy Fall schedule certainly benefited him, as it did many last year who brought good form into these events.

· The American was an emblem of consistency prior to winning here too, as he’d made 11 cuts in a row prior to his win here.

· Griffin had gained +5 or more strokes tee to green in his last four starts on the PGA TOUR before winning in Houston and was also riding an insanely hot putter, which had gained him +4 or more strokes in three of his previous four starts.

· Last year’s second-place finisher Mark Hubbard also followed a very similar path to Griffin, as he’d played in all four of the prior Fall events and had posted T13 and T10 finishes before nearly closing here.

· Co-runner up Scott Harrington had also played in three of four prior Fall events and was coming off one of his best PGA TOUR finishes, a T23 at the Safeway Open.

DRAFTKINGS DFS STRATEGY

Cash Games: With the Masters looming next week and some question marks surrounding the top players in the field here, going with a balanced approach to start your DraftKings lineups this week isn’t the worst idea. Scottie Scheffler ($9,600-see below) and Viktor Hovland ($9,800) are both playing quite well and should have plenty of motivation to go after the win in Houston to secure their world rankings for next year. After them, mid-range targets like Cameron Davis ($8,100) and Si Woo Kim ($8,300) deserve some consideration for how well they score on DraftKings and their consistency of late. Other potential cash targets to include here include the likes of Sam Burns ($7,500), Matthew NeSmith ($7,000) and Mark Hubbard ($6,800).

Tournaments: Tony Finau ($10,900) being priced up as the second-highest player in this medium strength field may actually keep his ownership down this week. He played well in his return from a COVID-19 diagnosis and could really benefit from the five par 5’s in play this week from a DraftKings scoring perspective. At $8K, James Hahn ($8,000) also brings in really good form but given some of the names he’s priced around it seems doubtful his ownership will get out of control either. Further down, Aaron Wise ($7,400) also makes for a solid GPP pivot as he’s shown better consistency of late and remains cheap for the talent he possesses. Other potential big-field tournament targets here include Russell Knox ($7,200), Ollie Schniederjans ($7,100), Charl Schwartzel ($6,700) and Kevin Tway ($6,200).

Recent Form

1. Russell Henley ($9,400, Recent finishes: T4-T3): Henley has been on a tear for most of the summer, mixing in solid finishes with several top 10’s or better. Recently he came close to winning in both of the limited field events in L.A. and Vegas, and even entered Sunday with the 54-hole lead at The CJ Cup. He ranks first in TTG and APP stats over the last 50 rounds.

2. James Hahn ($8,000, Recent finishes: 6th-T13): Hahn has found something in his game over the last couple months, recording three top 10’s in a row coming into this week—including a top five from the Shriners three weeks ago where he gained +6.7 strokes on APP. He’s been off for a few weeks now, but his run of good play has been backed by solid ball-striking, so expect to see more good stuff from him here.

3. Sergio Garcia ($9,100, Recent finishes: T21-T43-win): Garcia won last month at the Sanderson Farms Event where he putted with his eyes closed the whole week. The veteran has struck the ball of late and ranks first in OTT stats in this field. His putting remains a week-to-week mystery, but he’ll be looking for one more good effort here prior to Augusta.

4. Tyrrell Hatton ($10,300, Recent finishes: T3-T27): Hatton bounced back nicely from a missed cut at the U.S. Open with a T3 finish at The CJ Cup last month, where he led the field in approach stats. He ranks out 5th in SG Approach stats and 3rd in DraftKings points gained over the last 50 rounds in this field.

5. Wyndham Clark ($7,700, Recent finishes:2nd-T13): Clark has started to put together some big results in the Fall swing, posting a T13 at the Shriners before his playoff loss in Bermuda last week. The talented 26-year-old is showcasing some of the potential he showcased while in college and should be one to watch in the remaining Fall events as we close out the season.

MY PICK: Scottie Scheffler ($9,600)

Despite missing out on the U.S. Open due to a COVID-19 diagnosis, Scheffler will in fact be making his fifth Fall start this week. This run puts him nicely in line with last year’s top finishers at this event, who had all been active in the Fall as well. The American hasn’t put up any massive results since returning to the PGA TOUR in the Fall, but you are starting to get the sense another big week is just around the bend. The T17 at the ZOZO Championship saw him in contention going into Sunday before some lackluster putting led him to an even par final round and just a T17 finish.

Scheffler actually led the field in Strokes Gained: Off the Tee stats at the ZOZO and also ranked 4th in SG: Tee to Green stats, so his game seems to be shaping up nicely as we get closer to the year’s last major. The 24-year-old has produced some solid results on similar parkland style settings, including a T4 at the year’s first major at TPC Harding Park, and the longer driving holes here—which includes five Par 5’s— should really benefit a player who is in such good form with his driver. A Texas native, who also attended school in the state, Scheffler should feel right at home this week and sets up as a solid DraftKings play in the mid-$9K range. He should have a great shot at bringing home his first win this week.

MY SLEEPER: Matthew NeSmith ($7,000)

NeSmith comes into this week’s event playing solid golf. The 27-year-old flashed some good form around this time last year too and comes into 2020’s version of the Houston Open with T17 and T8 finishes over his last two starts. NeSmith ranks fourth in this field in Strokes Gained: Approach stats over his last 50 rounds, a statistic that should automatically get him on our radar for DFS purposes. The fact he’s also putting well though makes him an even higher-end target for me. The South Carolina native has now gained +3 or more strokes putting in each of his last two starts and seems far more confident with that club of late after enduring a prolonged slump on the greens in the late summer.

Over his last three starts, NeSmith has ranked 1st-23rd-26th in birdies made and is clearly feeling confident rolling into what will be his fifth Fall swing event. This is a player who has shown promise and the ability to compete in these weaker field events—when the best players are either lacking top form or simply not out in droves—and should be able to keep up with the bigger hitters here even if the course does play a little longer. Good weather and likely manageable rough means he may even have a shot at taking down his first win here, and at $7K flat on DraftKings, he rates out as great DFS value for me.

Reid Fowler provides his top PGA TOUR golf bets on DraftKings Sportsbook for the Vivint Houston Open.

We have one more tournament to build the bankroll before The Masters next week. Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka, Tyrell Hatton and Tony Finau headline the Vivint Houston Open in the first year at Memorial Park GC. The course follows the CJ Cup at Shadow Creek and the ZOZO Championship at Sherwood as relatively new courses, making it a little challenging to find the golfers who fit the course. Like the previous weeks, relying on ball-striking will be important this week and backing the golfers with the highest skill set in said category should rise to the top.

Memorial Park GC is a public golf course with 60,000-plus rounds played annually, so these guys may have a field day here. Still, Memorial Park has some complicated green complexes and holes that provide more risk than reward providing challenges the guys will need to navigate.

Scottie Scheffler to Win +2200

Scheffler is in the range where you could easily bet a few of these guys and feel pretty good about your card this week. Scheffler’s ball-striking is superb and he’s played golf in Texas throughout all stages of his life, growing up in Dallas and playing his college golf at the University of Texas. Narrative street aside, Scottie is 26th in Approach, 15th in opportunities gained and second in SG: Off-the-Tee. Scheffler played great golf two months ago and may find this week is just what he needs to get back there.

Sungjae Im to Win +3300

Sungjae should always garner interest when the course is on bermuda, and especially when the course is on bermuda AND when he’s hitting it well. Im’s game is coming around and he’s striking the ball similar to earlier this year when he rattled off a win at the Honda Classic, followed it up with a third at API and a top 10 at the Charles Schwab Challenge, the first tournament back from the shutdown.

Cam Davis to Win +7500 | Top 5 +1200

There’s a strong correlation with Australian’s playing well in Texas with Marc Leishman, Adam Scott and Aaron Baddeley winning or recording a top 5 in the Lone-Star State. Davis is a great driver of the ball and plays exceptionally well on bermuda, ranking third in SG: Total over the last 36 rounds. I wrote more on Davis (and Sunjgae) in my DraftKings article if you want more reason(s) to play them.

Reid Fowler previews the Vivint Houston Open and gives his picks for your DraftKings PGA TOUR fantasy golf lineups.

The PGA TOUR heads to Texas for one last tune-up before the Masters with the Vivint Houston Open at Memorial Park Golf Course. The course will play as a par 72, measuring 7,432 yards, and it will be played on bermuda greens again this week.

STRATEGY

Dustin Johnson ($11,500) and Adam Scott ($9,200), who were both out recently due to COVID-19, will be in the field looking to dust off the rust and get some last minute work before heading to Augusta National next week. Other golfers like Tony Finau ($10,900), Scottie Scheffler ($9,600) and Sungjae Im ($9,300) will embark on the recently renovated Memorial Park Golf Course, which hasn’t hosted a PGA TOUR event since 1963 (Houston Open). The Vivint Houston Open will be the first PGA TOUR event designed by Tom Doak, and we should expect a course that’s different than what we’re used to in Texas and one that may have some similarities to next week. A 2019 Golf Advisor article alludes to a faint resemblance to Augusta National in that “much of the golf course will be opened up, especially the back nine, which Doak compared to Augusta National in the sense that spectators should be able to see several holes at once”.

The fairways will slope toward hazard areas, and the green complexes will be challenging; golfers will need to be steadfast in their plan to navigate the course tee-to-green. Like Pete Dye and Donald Ross, Doak uses sightlines off-the-tee to entice aggressive golfers to take risks for the potential reward. With that said, the margin for error if you miss is more penal than playing conservatively. Hole number 13, a driveable par 4, is a prime example of one risk/reward opportunity golfers will face. The hole seems relatively benign with no hazards, but the green is very narrow and steeps severely on both sides to challenging up-and-down collection areas, bringing in the potential of big numbers. The 2019 renovations also included adding a par 5 this week (five total), which will be a big factor in scoring this week. There will be 19 sand traps and two water hazards that come into play on four holes.

Doak routinely mentions golfers will need to ‘think’ their way through this course and that it’s not just a long track the players can overpower. Lineup stacking with golfers who have similar styles should be a good strategy this week, especially on a new course with no previous knowledge of how it will play. Pairing Brooks Koepka ($10,600), who consulted during the renovations, with other long-hitters like Sam Burns ($7,500), could be viable. Rostering shorter-hitters shouldn’t be overlooked as well. Brian Harman ($8,500), Russell Henley ($9,400) and Denny McCarthy ($7,900) all rank outside the top 100 in Driving Distance but inside the top 13 in Strokes Gained: Total over the previous three months.

Viktor Hovland ($9,800)

Hovland looks like he’s returning to his game from earlier this summer, gaining an average of 5.6 strokes tee-to-green over his previous three starts. Hovland is one of the best drivers of the ball, ranking 20th in Strokes Gained: Off-the-Tee, and should take advantage of the five par 5s, ranking eighth in par 5 efficiency over his previous three months.

Sungjae Im ($9,300)

Sungjae’s streak of seven made cuts is due primarily to six straight events of positive Approach and Off-the-Tee splits dating back to the TOUR Championship. Sungjae is also much better putting on bermuda, gaining in seven of his last 10 rounds. Since the restart, Im is fourth Off-the-Tee, 24th with his irons and inside the top 25 in par 5 efficiency.

Cameron Davis ($8,100)

Davis has been one of the best bermuda putters over the previous three months, ranking third in the field. Mix his putting prowess with his ability Off-the-Tee and we should have a solid play in this range to pair with some of the top-priced studs like Brooks Koepka ($10,600) or Viktor Hovland ($9,800). Like Sungjae, Davis has been great on the par 5s, ranking fifth in par 5 efficiency since late July. Davis may also be able to pick up a few strokes on the short par 4s, ranking 14th in eagle rate and seventh in par 4s measuring 350 to 400 yards over the last three months.

Wyndham Clark ($7,700)

Last week was tough to watch if you backed Wyndham Clark. He played fantastic throughout the week and hit 17 of 18 greens on Sunday. Brian Gay ($6,600) just caught a heater in the final round was marvelous with his putter on Sunday. Hopefully, this keeps people off of Clark this week, who should fit this course nicely with how well he plays par 5s, ranking 14th since the restart.

Zach Thompson sifts through the golf bargain bin and provides his top DraftKings value options for the Vivint Houston Open.

The PGA TOUR is back on U.S. soil after a week in Bermuda, as players get ready for the Masters next week with a warm up tournament this week at the Vivint Houston Open. It’s a pretty solid field of entrants for this week’s event as some of the top golfers tune up their games for Augusta, so expect another fun week of DraftKings fantasy golf. This event has been a regular stop on the PGA TOUR and was typically played the week before the Masters for many years. Last season, it was moved to the fall but will return to its setup spot the week before Augusta in this year’s modified schedule. Despite the fact that it’s a long-running tournament, we don’t have course history to work with, since the tournament will be returning to the Memorial Park Golf Course for the first time since 1963.

The field is expected to feature the returns of Dustin Johnson ($11,500) and Adam Scott ($9,200), who both tested positive for COVID-19 in recent weeks. Other big names back in action this week after skipping the Bermuda Championship last week are Tony Finau ($10,900), Tyrrell Hatton ($10,300), Hideki Matsuyama ($10,000) and Viktor Hovland ($9,800). There are also past winners of the Houston Open in the field, including defending champion Lanto Griffin ($8,900) and previous winner Russell Henley ($9,400), but their wins both came at the Golf Club of Houston, so their success may not translate to this new course.

Set your DraftKings fantasy golf lineups here: PGA TOUR $350K Resurgence [$100K to 1st]

While the PGA TOUR will be playing its first tournament on this version of Memorial Park Golf Course, the course has been around for a long time, originally being designed as a nine-hole course for use by convalescent soldiers from the nearby military hospital at Camp Logan in 1912. It hosted this event from 1951 to 1963, but it recently underwent a major renovation led by Tom Doak with Brooks Koepka ($10,600) serving as the PGA TOUR player consultant. Koepka is in the field this week, so it’ll be interesting to see if his thorough knowledge of the course helps him find his form, which has been inconsistent and limited by injury lately. This will be the first PGA TOUR event held on a Doak designed course, but he’s very highly regarded as a course architect.

What can we expect from the remade course this season? There are only 19 bunkers on the course, and instead the layout utilized tight grass slopes and contours to repel shots around the green complexes. The course is also designed to inject excitement into the finishing stretch with short holes at 13-through-15, followed by a par 5 16th that has plenty of water in play with no place to bail out. The seventeenth can be set up as a drivable par 4, with a lengthy carry over more of the reservoir if the tees are adjusted to put that in play. The final hole is a long, 501-yard par 4, which will also likely result in a variety of scores and plenty of drama on Sunday.

The course will play as a par 72 with about 7,432 yards depending on setup. There are five par 5s and five par 3s on the official setup with two par 3s between 150-175 yards and two between 200-225 yards. This course looks to be a course that values accuracy off the tee to set up shots from the correct side of the fairway, but it will mostly be a second-shot course where proximity will be key. Shots gained on approach will definitely be one of the focuses in DraftKings lineup building this week along with leaning more into recent form and overall game since course history isn’t a factor to be considered.

As the big names start to return, you’ll need to blend the right stars with the correct value plays. There are some nice affordable options, who I think can pay off with a good week at a very affordable salary. Let’s take a look at who stands out this week from the options available for $7.5K or cheaper on DraftKings.

Sam Burns, $7,500

Burns has made the cut in three of his four events this season after starting the year with a top 10 at the Safeway Open in Napa. Burns finished in the top 35 at the Corales Puntacana Resort & Club Championship and the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open as well, and could have had a much better finish at Shriners if it wasn’t for a tough final round 70. Burns has been very good off the tee so far this season, gaining .991 shots per round off the tee and another .402 shots per round putting. He ranks ninth on the PGA TOUR in driving distance and is in the top 40 in Driving Accuracy Percentage and Greens in Regulation Percentage. Last season, he also finished in the top 10 in driving distance and gained significant strokes both off-the-tee and putting.

While his approach game and work around the green can sometimes let him down, he has several strengths which should play to this venue. He ranks in the top 25 on the PGA TOUR on birdie or better scores on par 5s and also plays above average on the longer par 3s in the 200-to-225 yard range. Burns is also twelfth on the PGA TOUR with an average of 4.929 birdies per round, and he has shown the ability to contend when the scoring goes low.

Scott Stallings, $6,900

Stallings has been up-and-down in the early going this season but had two strong showings sandwiched around a MC at the Shriners. He finished T6 at the Sanderson Farms Championship and T26 last week in Bermuda. In Jackson, he ranked sixth in the field in Shots Gained: Approach and seemed to find his mid-range game again last week at Port Royal, although ShotLink data is not available for the event. In the 12 rounds he has played with ShotLink data, he ranks No. 14 on the PGA TOUR with 1.102 shots gained on approach per round. Unlike Burns, he doesn’t mash it off the tee, but compensates for it with his irons and approach game.

Last year, Stallings put together a similar statistical profile and made 15 of 20 cuts while notching two top-10 finishes and three top 25s. Stallings missed the cut last year at this event on a different course, but should be poised to play the weekend if he can stay dialed in with his irons.

Austin Cook, $6,900

Since the restart, Cook has been rounding into form and has made the cut in 10 of his past 11 tournaments. He made it into the playoff at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open a few weeks ago before losing to Martin Laird ($7,300) and finishing T2. It was Cook’s best finish since he won the RSM Classic back in 2017, his rookie year on the PGA TOUR. In his three events this season, Cook has gained .796 shots per round on approach and an impressive 1.280 shots per round tee-to-green. Last season, he was an above-average putter but has struggled a bit this season.

He seemed to find his groove, though, in the final round of the Shriners and will look to build on that success this week in Houston. The Arkansas alumnus should be at home in this part of the country on this style of course. He did make the cut and finish T17 at the Golf Club of Houston last season, and he will try to translate that success to Memorial Park this season.

John Huh, $6,300

Huh has only played one tournament since late February, so we’re dealing with a very small sample size for this high-risk, high-reward play in Houston. A few weeks ago, Huh looked sharp at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open in his return after the restart finishing T19 after firing four rounds under 70.

While Huh’s flat-stick needs a lot of work after the long layoff, he was locked in with his approach shots, gaining 1.675 shots per round, which is the third-best mark on the PGA TOUR. He also ranks in the top 10 in Shots Gained: Tee to Green, so if he can knock the rust off his putting game, he could be set up for success this week. He had made five cuts in a row before missing the cut at The Honda Classic and heading into his extended hiatus. Huh has made the cut in 6-of-8 trips to this event in the past with a pair of top-25 finishes, but all that was on a different course. On this track and with such limited recent sample size, Huh is a wild card, to be sure, but I do like his upside and his very affordable salary. Including him as a punt play and getting solid production will enable to you pay up for some of the top names on the salary structure.
