It’s not a sand save, it’s a drowning save on No. 13 at Augusta.

On the Par 5 13th hole, Billy Horschel found the water. But no problem, as he just got got barefoot, rolled up his pants, grabbed a wedge and bombed it out from underwater to put it on the green. And he saved par!

It didn’t start as the best move, as the famously slick greens of Augusta National also apply to the slope in the second cut as well.

Masters week is upon us at Augusta National Golf Club. Covid-19 resulted in a seven month delay, but the biggest tournament on the golf calendar is here. Having it happen during the college football and NFL calendar might just be a cherry on top. Or maybe you think it will mess up your Saturday and Sunday viewing schedule. Either way, the Masters is here.

The second round of the tournament will tee off on Friday at 7 a.m. ET at August National Golf Club. Friday coverage opens via live stream at ESPN+, Masters.com, and the Masters App. Golf Channel picks up televised coverage at 8 a.m. and ESPN takes over at 1 p.m.

The morning starts at 7 a.m. with Justin Harding, Shugo Imahira, and Nick Taylor teeing off at #1. Sung Kang and Erik van Rooyen open the morning at #10. The final group tees off at #1 at 12:22 p.m. and includes Si Woo Kim, Nate Lashley, and Graeme McDowell.

Tournament favorite Bryson DeChambeau tees off at 11:38 a.m. at Hole #1 with Louis Oosthuizen and Jon Rahm. Defending champion Tiger Woods tees off at noon at the 10th hole with Shane Lowry and Andy Ogletree. Woods is back as defending champion. He’s had a rough go of it for much of this year since golf returned, but he’ll look to bring back some of the magic.

We break down the weather forecast for this week’s Masters Tournament at Augusta National. There is significant rain in the early forecast due to Tropical Storm Eta.

Thursday update: First round play is scheduled to resume at 10:22 a.m. ET, per PGA Tour Comms.

Thursday AM update: The Masters has suspended first round play as of 7:37 a.m due to inclement weather. There is no word yet on when the round will resume.

The Masters was moved from April to November due to Covid-19, and that move could bring some weather complications this week at Augusta National Golf Club.

Tropical Storm Eta is making its way into Florida and moving north. It is not expected to create too many problems in Georgia, but there is a good chance of rain. The PGA Tour’s official website along with the National Weather Service forecast rain being most likely on Thursday, but still a decent chance through the weekend.

The National Weather Service has an 80 percent chance of rain on Thursday, 40 percent on Friday, 30 percent on Saturday, and 40 percent on Sunday. Here’s the full forecast for Augusta during the tournament.

Reid Fowler provides his top PGA TOUR golf bets on DraftKings Sportsbook for the Masters Tournament.

The 84th Masters Tournament will be unlike any other. Usually played in the first full week of April, the PGA TOUR, in conjunction with the Masters Tournament officials, rescheduled the Major for this week due to COVID-19.

The course may play different, and the weather could play a factor in how the course runs. The weather report shows rain in the forecast throughout the tournament, but as always, it’s best to check the forecast up until tee off Thursday morning if you’re looking to play some weather draws.

Augusta National is the ultimate test of golf. At over 7,400 yards, this artistic layout is easy on the eyes but tough on the scorecard. There are grueling stretches of holes like 10 through 12, arguably the most formidable trio on the PGA TOUR. There will be an excess of sidehill lies in the fairways and dramatic undulations on these fast, bentgrass greens.

Since 2015, past winners’ average odds are just under +3900. Danny Willett had the longest at +6600 in 2016, and Jordan Spieth was the shortest in 2015 at +1100. The Masters Tournament has seen longshots like Willett and Charl Schwartzel (+9000 in 2011) win, and there are some positive expected value (+EV) bets down the board this week. Still, this year shouldn’t be different from the five previous, and most of my betting card will consist of golfers at the top this week.

Justin Thomas to Win +1300

Thomas ranks near the top at second in Approach over the previous 36 rounds, but backing JT is as simple as this: he wins. Thomas won the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational earlier this season, which was one of the tougher fields since the restart, and just lost in a playoff to Collin Morikawa at Muirfield Village, a course that has some similarities to Augusta. Already a major winner, Thomas competes and wins when the competition and course are tough. His 13 wins span from WGC events to Majors to another demanding course like the 2018 Honda Classic. He’s progressed each year at Augusta and mentioned in his post-tournament presser last season that he should’ve won - this is the mindset I want to back this week. A 12th place at Augusta isn’t terrible for many golfers, but JT wants to win and knows he’s got the game that can.

Tony Finau to Win +3300 | Top 10 +250

Finau recorded a top 10 in his first trip to Augusta National back in 2018 and followed it up with a top five last season. Finau has the game to be successful at Augusta National, and it’s evident with how well he’s done in just two starts. With Finau, we all know the story. He’s hasn’t recorded a win since the 2016 Puerto Rico Open. Although his win equity isn’t significant, he’s been fantastic in the Majors. He’s finished no worse than eighth in his last three dating back to the 2019 Open Championship, where he finished third. His ball-striking is superb, and his putting has been solid, gaining 2.5 strokes on the greens in back-to-back tournaments. An 11th at the ZOZO Championship as well all point to him recording a high finish at another Major. Usually, I stay away from top 5 or top 10 bets at this short of a number, but it’s necessary with Finau, and so is backing him at a course that suits his game.

Si Woo Kim Top Korean Player +250

If you’re bullish on Kim like I am, he’s +20000 to win and +3000 to finish top 5 this week. While those are both longshots, him finishing as the top Korean player isn’t. Sungjae Im (+125) is the favorite in the group, and while he’s been great and getting back into form, Si Woo has the experience here that Sungjae doesn’t. Si Woo has two top 25s in the last two years and is no slouch either when it comes to ball-striking, ranking 27th over his previous 24 rounds. What also puts me on Kim’s side over Im this week is Si Woo’s short game. Over the last 36 rounds, he ranks second in SG: Around-the-Green to Sungjae’s 80th place ranking over the same time frame.

Geoff Ulrich gets you set for The Masters with winning trends and his picks for your DraftKings fantasy golf lineups.

The Masters is one of the most unique fields of the year. The regulars on the PGA TOUR take a lot of pride in just getting an invite to Augusta as simply having a solid year doesn’t ensure attendance. Winning a PGA TOUR event, being a top 50 player in the world or having a big finish at another major — or making the Tour Championship field — are usually the only ways in. That is unless, of course, you have already won the tournament, then you have an invitation back for life.

The field this year looks set at 92 players, with 16 past champions in the field and 26 first-timers teeing things up. With COVID-19 pushing this event back on the schedule, there are actually quite a few high-ranked players missing out on the event this year. Daniel Berger (13th ranked in the world) didn’t get an invite and neither did Harris English (33rd) or Viktor Hovland (23rd). All three men were ranked outside of the top 50 when the final cutoff occurred in the spring.

While those players will be missed, the good news is that there are no major injuries to report for 2020 as Brooks Koepka ($9,700; knee) has recently returned back from injury and looked fine competing last week in Houston. As always, there could be breaking news anytime regarding COVID-19, so make sure you check in on the DK Live app periodically this week or by following DK Live on Twitter at @dklive.

One final note for DFS purposes: The cut line for this event is also unique. The cut still takes place after Friday, but only the top 50 plus ties will play the weekend. Getting all six of your golfers through the cut line will be especially crucial this week as over 50% of the actual field will get a chance to play the weekend.

Course Details

Augusta National Golf Club, Augusta, Georgia

Par 72, 7,400-7,500 yards depending on setup

Augusta National was built on the site of an old tree sanctuary and every one of its holes has a name associated with its natural surrounding (usually a tree, bush or flower, how quaint!). At its most basic, Augusta is a standard par 72 course that has four par 5s, four par 3s and 10 par 4s. However, there truly isn’t anything standard about the setup of the holes or the course. Augusta is one of the hilliest tracks on Tour and the elevation changes and slopes mean experience playing the course can really pay off. The slick bentgrass greens offer up their own challenge too, and missing an approach here on the wrong side of the green can often bring big numbers into play.

The course was redesigned back in 2002 to catch up with modern technology and now plays quite long, but has still seen winning scores ranging all the way from +1 (Zach Johnson in 2007) to -18 (Jordan Spieth in 2015). In 2016, poor weather really affected scoring as Danny Willett won at just 5-under-par, while the course has played somewhat neutral the past two years with winners posting 15- and 13-under-par scores.

As far as the individual holes go here’s a brief breakdown of what will await the player’s this week:

Par 5s 550-600: 2

Par 5s 500-550: 2

Par 4s over 500: 1

Par 4s 450-500: 5

Par 4s 400-450: 3

Par 4s under 400: 1

Par 3s over 200: 1

Par 3s 150 – 200: 3

Augusta’s par 5s are often the “action holes” where you’ll see most of the birdies and some eagles. All of the par 5s are reachable in two and can yield Eagles to those who hit two quality shots coming in, which makes huge swings possible on Sunday. This is where elite ball-strikers can take advantage and past champions like Bubba Watson ($9,000) and Tiger Woods ($9,100) have made their living killing these holes over time. Solid driving of the ball and mid-to-short iron play is essential on these holes and the longer par 4s.

The true teeth and test of this course, however, lie in par 4s, and there are six that range over 450 yards in length. There are no true “birdie holes” among the 10 on the course — although long drivers like Bryson DeChambeau ($11,200) could certainly change that for 2020 — as even the short par 4 No. 3 challenges players with a wicked green contour, and it often yields as many bogies as birdies during the week. The par 3s can be taken advantage of, but require fearless shot-making and these holes (specifically No. 12) are often where we see a huge mistake by one of the leaders on Sunday.

2020 Outlook: The good news is that it doesn’t appear like temperatures for this week will be all that cold. Highs for all four days are firmly in the low-to-mid 70s which should keep things relatively pleasant. The bad news is that there is a lot of rain expected this week. Starting Tuesday, the course is expected to get drenched and Thursday has rain and T-storms in the forecast for most of the morning and mid-afternoon. It is possible things start to clear up Friday afternoon, though, and the Friday afternoon wave could see the best weather of the first two days. The weekend still has the possibility of rain, but mostly just cloudy skies in the forecast. Expect a wet course that may play longer than normal due to the lack of roll and slightly cooler temps.

· His solid irons also led him to a great week on the par 3s, as they tend to be some of Augusta’s toughest holes. So playing them well under-par likely made the difference for him.

· Tiger didn’t overpower Augusta, he simply played smart off the tee and let his irons and putter do the work for him, very similar to how players like Jordan Spieth and Patrick Reed have found success here recently.

HORSES FOR COURSES

1. Jordan Spieth (best finish: win-2015, T2-2016, 2014 T3-2018): Spieth has accomplished more in six starts at this event than most will accomplish over their entire golfing careers. He’s placed second here (twice) and won the event by tying the scoring record of Tiger Woods (-18) in 2015. In 2018, he shot a brilliant 64 in the final round to vault him into solo third place. His form may not be great, but don’t ever doubt his mastery of this course.

2. Tiger Woods (best finish: win-2019, 2005, 2002, 2001, 1997): Woods broke a long dry spell at Augusta last year by notching his fifth green jacket. The win capped an epic comeback and may have acted as the final act on a great career. His course history is unmatched here, but his recent form suggests he’s likely not worth paying up for. It’s cool to look at all those wins though

3. Rory McIlroy (best finishes: T4-2015, T5-2018): Rory may not have a win at Augusta, but he’s been through the wringer here as far as experiences go. He was the leader going into the back nine in 2011 before he slid to T15 and also went off in the final pairing in 2018 before losing out badly to Patrick Reed. He’s finished T10 or better here in five of the past six seasons and seems likely to break through at this event one day.

4. Dustin Johnson (best finish: T2-2019, T4-2016): Johnson has been inching ever closer to a green jacket in the past few seasons. Last year marked his best-ever finish at Augusta, as a Sunday surge left him just one shot short of getting into a playoff with Tiger. Now sporting the best form of his career, seeing DJ grab a second major seems very possible.

5. Rickie Fowler (best finishes: 2nd-2018, T9-2019): Fowler has compiled an excellent record at Augusta over his career. Rickie has now finished T12 or better in four of his past five appearances at this major with a career-best second-place finish coming in 2018 when he came up one shot short of chasing down Reed. There’s no discounting his recent form — which is terrible — but perhaps for one week he can shake off the yips and put together a solid week for DFS players.

DFS STRATEGY

Cash Games: There’s little doubt that Dustin Johnson ($10,000) is a near must-play in these formats. DJ’s price got depressed a bit after a COVID-19 layoff, but he proved he’s still in top form last week with a T2 finish at the Vivint Houston Open where he also finished second in SG:TTG stats. He’s too cheap as the fifth-most expensive player on DK. Further down, you could also make a case that Hideki Matsuyama ($8,700) is also slightly underpriced given his consistency of late. He’s fifth in SG: Total at Augusta over the past five years. If you’re looking for value, Shane Lowry ($7,300) should also be on the radar, as the Irishman was in contention recently at the BMW PGA Championship in Europe and was a solid T11 last week. The likes of Louis Oosthuizen ($7,900) and Tony Finau ($8,800) can also be considered here.

Tournaments: It’s likely the ownership of the top players will be pretty flat due to pricing, so looking below them for lower-owned players may be key. Tyrrell Hatton ($9,400) will be playing Augusta for just the fourth time and has never finished better than T44, which may make people skeptical enough to stay away. He’s in top form right now though, posting a T7 last week in Houston and had a win last month in England. Paul Casey ($8,000) hasn’t done much in between, but his performance at the year’s first two majors has been terrific. He has multiple top-6 finishes at Augusta and his wealth of Open Championship experience to draw on the weather could play to his favor here. Other targets for this format include the likes of Jason Day ($8,400), Lee Westwood ($7,200-see below), Brandt Snedeker ($6,900) and Matt Wallace ($6,800).

Recent Form

1. Justin Thomas ($10,700, Recent finishes: T2-T12): Thomas comes into this event off of a near miss at the ZOZO Championship. The American finished T2 there and gained +5-strokes putting. Thomas hasn’t finished worse than T12 in his past four starts and was T8 at the last major, the U.S. Open at Winged Foot.

2. Jon Rahm ($10,500, Recent finishes: T2-T17): Like Thomas, Rahm came up just short at the ZOZO Championship, landing himself a T2. The Spaniard played excellent there, gaining +10-strokes TTG but simply couldn’t sink enough putts to keep up. He has three top-5 finishes now in his past five starts — including a win at the BMW Championship two months ago.

3. Tyrrell Hatton ($9,400, Recent finishes:T7-T28-T3): Hatton maintained his solid form last week when he landed a T7 at the Vivint Houston Open. The Englishman finished T3 at the CJ Cup a few events back and also won the BMW Championship last month. He’s in as good of form as anyone right now and looks to be peaking at just the right time for Augusta.

4. Bubba Watson ($9,000, Recent finishes: T4-T7): Watson is playing excellent golf right now. The two-time Masters champion finished T4 and T7 in his last two starts at the ZOZO and the CJ Cup, where he was in beast mode in the tee to green department, gaining +11 and +7.9 strokes TTG at those events, respectively. He’s someone who could challenge the top-5 players this week.

5. Patrick Cantlay ($9,600, Recent finishes: win-T28): After a long stretch of middling finishes, Cantlay looks like he’s finally put everything together as he comes in off a win at the ZOZO Championship in his last start. The American gained +2 strokes in every major category at the ZOZO and looks like his game is as sharp as ever heading into his fourth Masters.

MY PICK: Xander Schauffele ($9,800)

Schauffele is one of the few elite players that have yet to take home a title in 2020. It hasn’t been from lack of opportunity though. The American has arguably been the most consistent player on the planet since the restart, playing 13 times since the Tour began its revised schedule and landing five finishes of T6 or better in that span. Schauffele’s game has been so consistently good that he hasn’t finished outside of the top 25 now in any of his past 11 starts and landed runner-up finishes in two of his past four starts coming in. His bevy of close calls does call to mind the run-up of form in past major winners, too, as the likes of Patrick Reed (2018 Masters) and Gary Woodland (2019 U.S. Open) both had similar run-ups prior to their major titles.

Schauffele is certainly ready to win a major, as he’s now finished T10 or better in seven of the 14 major championships he’s entered. His work around and on the greens has evolved to the point where he’s now one of the best scramblers in the game and ranks sixth in both SG:ATG and PUTT stats in the field over the past 50 rounds. With the course playing soggy and conditions less than ideal, it feels like Schauffele’s stellar all-around game will have more impact this week and his busy and fruitful lead-in means he’ll also be better prepped for whatever Augusta does end up throwing at the players this week. While players like Dustin Johnson ($10,000) and Justin Thomas ($10,700) all possess slightly more firepower than my pick, with the course likely to play sloppy this week, short games and simple grit could perhaps become more of a factor. I like the chances for Schauffele — one of last year’s runner-ups at this major — to get things done this week.

MY SLEEPER: Lee Westwood ($7,200)

Westwood comes into this year’s Masters pushing 47 years of age. While it may seem silly to target players who are only three years off from qualifying for the Champions Tour, Westwood really hasn’t been showing any signs of slowing down of late. The Englishman has been busy for most of 2020 and will have made starts in eight of the past 11 weeks coming into this major. He actually grabbed a win in Abu Dhabi early in the year on the European Tour against a decent field and posted a solid T13 at the U.S. Open in September, which marked his first U.S. start since the COVID-19 restart began.

From a recent form perspective, it’s hard to do much better than Westwood at this price, as he’s now finished inside the top 20 in six of his past eight starts. The experience factor is also huge here, as we’re getting a player who has racked up six top 10s at the Masters over his career and been in contention numerous times, finishing runner-up at Augusta in both 2016 and 2010. The rain and sloppy course will bring lots of unknowns, but for a player with a ton of Open Championship experience and success, who also excelled here in poor conditions back in 2016, you would have to think the rain and a sloppy course might actually work in his favor. In the low $7K range, look for Westwood to post a solid week here and potentially be a huge difference-maker in GPPs this week on DraftKings.

Reid Fowler previews the Masters Tournament and gives his picks for your DraftKings PGA TOUR fantasy golf lineups.

A tradition unlike any other holds new meaning this year as the PGA TOUR travels to Augusta, Ga., for the Masters Tournament. Removed from its usual post of the first full week in April, The Masters got rescheduled to this week due to COVID-19, which also means (barring any changes) we’ll have two Masters Tournaments played in six months. The course is a par 72, measures 7,475 yards and will be played on bentgrass greens.

STRATEGY

Augusta National hasn’t seen a ton of changes except a few revisions made between 1999 and 2006. Before the 2019 edition of The Masters, the course added 40 yards to the fifth hole, making it a par 4 just under 500 yards, totaling six par 4s that’ll play at or over 450 yards. The course has little to no rough and the regular four par 5s, all of which play as the four easiest holes, but Augusta National is far from easy. The golfers will start each round on the second-hardest hole and end it with the fifth toughest. If that wasn’t enough, the 240-yard par 3 fourth hole is no easy task. Last season, it surrendered a 29 percent bogey rate, and if that’s where you think it ends, you’re wrong. The next hole is the 495-yard par 4 fifth hole, which recorded less than an 8 percent birdie rate and a 25 percent bogey rate in 2019. Those who navigate the tough test this week will join past winners like Tiger Woods ($9,100), Patrick Reed ($9,200), Danny Willett ($7,000), Jordan Spieth ($8,200), Bubba Watson ($9,000), Adam Scott ($8,900) and Phil Mickelson ($7,500).

If you’re hoping to have the million-dollar lineup, you’ll need to have all six players on your roster not just make the cut this week but place high. The field consists of only 93 golfers, and the cut will be top 50 and ties, the first time the tournament has changed the cut rules since 2013. Augusta National is a course that usually rewards those with experience and course knowledge; there hasn’t been a first-time winner since Fuzzy Zoeller back in 1979. The top 5 in Strokes Gained Total since 2015 are Jordan Spieth ($8,200), Rory McIlroy ($10,200), Justin Rose ($7,700), Dustin Johnson ($10,000) and Hideki Matsuyama ($8,700).

Augusta National also doesn’t allow green-reading books, which will be tough for first-timers on these fast, bentgrass greens. Greens will be averaging 13.5 on the stimpmeter and will sport massive undulations where Approach into the correct quadrants is of the utmost importance. The top 5 in Strokes Gained: Putting on fast bentgrass greens over the previous 36 rounds are Rickie Fowler ($8,100), Kevin Na ($6,700), Andrew Putnam ($6,200), Webb Simpson ($9,300) and Kevin Kisner ($7,100).

Along with some course history and a hot putter, they’ll also need to have an elite Approach game and distance off the tee this week, especially if the weather softens the course. All six golfers in the winning million-dollar lineup ranked 35th or better in Strokes Gained Approach over their previous 36 rounds heading into Augusta. In 2018, all six golfers were inside the top 46 in Approach over the same timeframe.

Rostering golfers who have a top-tier around-the-green game should also work to your benefit. In an ESPN article, McIlroy recently mentioned that “the greens are exactly the same as they always are (in April). But for the fairways, it just hasn’t been cold enough for the bermuda to die off. That’s going to make things very interesting around the greens. Chipping will be a lot trickier.”

Course history is more important this week than others, but it shouldn’t overtake your entire process. Patrick Reed lost strokes in 50 percent of his prior 12 rounds before winning, and both Danny Willet and Jordan Spieth only had one start before their wins.

Dustin Johnson ($10,000)

Johnson has been spectacular at Augusta National, ranking fourth in Strokes Gained: Total since 2015. Johnson led the field in Strokes Gained: Off-the-Tee last week in Houston and was top 15 in putting, gaining 3.5 strokes with the flatstick. Johnson’s wedges have also been elite, ranking sixth in proximity from 100 to 125 yards over the previous 36 rounds. His mix of power with the driver and precision with his wedges makes him a contender at Augusta every year. Aside from missing The Masters in 2017 with an injury, Johnson hasn’t finished worse than 10th and recently came in second at the Vivint Houston Open last week, gaining just above 7.5 strokes Tee-to-Green over the weekend.

Jason Day ($8,400)

A 1-over on Sunday tempered a hot start in Houston, where Day finished seventh, gaining 7.44 strokes Tee-to-Green. He was able to gain just under two strokes through Approach this week, which is precisely the positive splits, after losing strokes in five straight tournaments, you want to see coming into Augusta National. Day ranks 20th in putting on bentgrass greens and third in Strokes Gained: Around-the-Green over the previous 50 rounds. Day’s record at Augusta since 2015 has been no worse than T28 and should be in a great position to win his first green jacket.

Rickie Fowler ($8,100)

Few have been better than Fowler on these bentgrass greens. Ranking sixth in Strokes Gained: Total here, Rickie is always someone to consider when Augusta National is next on the PGA TOUR schedule. Fowler’s been in the penultimate group twice here and has a scoring average of 71.5 in his starts at The Masters. Other than a missed cut in 2016, Fowler hasn’t finished worse than 11th here since 2014. His current form is nothing to be confident in, with his best finish being a 15th place coming back in August at the WGC St. Jude Invitational. Still, if you’re prescribing to course history over current form, then there are few better than Fowler at his favorite course.

Cameron Champ ($7,100)

Bryson Dechambeau ($11,200) will get all the publicity about his distance, but don’t forget about Champ, who ranks second to only Bryson in driving distance over the previous six months. Champ struggles on bentgrass greens but is hitting his irons well, gaining 8.7 strokes total through Approach over his past two tournaments. This is Champ’s first appearance at Augusta National, so winning may not be in his range of outcomes, but he’s got some recent history playing well in a major with a 10th-place finish at the PGA Championship back in August.

Si Woo Kim ($6,800)

Kim plays some of his best golf when the stakes are the highest, winning THE PLAYERS back in 2017, a recent top-13 finish at the PGA Championship in August and no worse than a top 25 over the past two years at Augusta National. Kim’s ball-striking has always been tremendous and he’s hitting it well right now, ranking 24th in Strokes Gained: Off-the-Tee and 12th in Approach over the previous 36 rounds. Kim is also elite around the greens, ranking second in Strokes Gained: Around-the-Green over the past six months.

Field: 93 Players | Cut: Top 50 and Ties after 36 Holes
First Tee: Thursday, Nov. 12
Defending Champion: Tiger Woods

At last year’s Masters, Tiger Woods tapped in for par, embraced his son just paces off the 18th green — causing upper lip gyrations of varying magnitudes; stiffness was lacking — then entered Butler Cabin to don sports’ highest sartorial honor. The comeback of the most dominant athlete of the 21st century was complete. Tiger Woods, sporting the green jacket over the customary Sunday red Nike apparel, was a mouthful of memberberries. It was the rare nostalgia moment without backlash; almost unanimously, everyone wanted it to happen. But now that too feels like a distant memory. It’s like Tiger’s triumph was a decade ago. It wasn’t, it only been 18 months.

Get the link to the PME Masters NO RAKE DraftKings Contest HERE

Pushed from its annual Easter-adjacent slot on the calendar, the 2020 Masters has shifted from the year’s first major to its last. As evidence by the drive up Magnolia Lane looking less like a majestic entrance to a hidden oasis and more like the creepy drive up to the house in “Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.” The winds will blow in different directions, no patrons, a weather shift, the azaleas will be less in bloom and more, you know, dead, but one thing remains unchanged. The field lock was the end of March. Well, actually, there are two things. Jim Nantz will issue the reminder that he and you are friends.

Despite two majors, the FedEx Cup playoffs, a WGC and 23 total events on the PGA TOUR since the restart, the four players to grab invitations based on their World Golf ranking from March 17 will remain the last four players in the field: Collin Morikawa, Scottie Scheffler, Christiaan Bezuidenhout and Graeme McDowell. The Masters lucked out with Morikawa earning one of those spots. It would have been an awful look if the PGA champion wasn’t at Augusta. Not that they care about what you think.

Still, despite posting a win and currently sitting at No. 13 in the world rankings, Daniel Berger will have to monitor Rae’s Creek on the dedicated stream to the 12th hole — Golden Bell. Ditto for Norwegian wunderkind Viktor Hovland. Now 10 spots ahead of Tiger at No. 23, the poor guy can’t even fly back to Oslo without having to self-isolate for two weeks.

After positive COVID-19 tests have taken Sergio Garcia and Joaquin Niemann out of the field, along with past Masters champ Angel Cabrera withdrawing with a wrist injury, the 2020 Masters field is set at 93 players. And those 93 players will encounter slightly different rules than Masters past.

With the November time slot, The Masters broadcast is fighting two enemies this week — daylight and the NFL. CBS does not want the live broadcast upending its 4 p.m. ET NFL game. The highest-rated Masters won’t even compete with the NFL in terms of TV ratings. Additionally, it gets dark early in November. So, two changes have been made to the Masters rules for 2020. First, the cut line will now only be the top 50 players and ties after 36 holes. The former rule of top 50 along with any player within 10 strokes of the lead is done. Just the top 50. Also, after getting a taste of it to avoid nasty weather in 2019, The Masters is switching to split tees the first two rounds. All of this is done to speed each round. Does it bother me? No. Will it bother the old men yelling at clouds? Most definitely.

It’s doubtful it will have much of an effect on the results, however, the spilt tees could lead to an interesting live betting opportunity. Maybe the sportsbooks are savvy to it, but it usually takes them a cycle or two to adjust properly. Holes No. 10-12 are typically far more difficult than No. 1-3, while all players will eventually get to Amen Corner, having it occur at the beginning of the round may drop some of the highest-end favorites a few points before they get the chance to make it all back with two par 5s in the next three holes. It may be a small difference, but at the top of the betting board, the difference between +900 and +1300 is gigantic.

2020 Masters: Strategy

Augusta National’s a Par 72, which plays longer than its 7,435 yards in a normal year because of the incredible amount of elevation shifts across the course. Now, the elephant in the room is the November weather versus the April weather. Presumably, it’s going to be colder for the 2020 Masters than in a normal year. Not so fast. While the forecast is always a changing variable, Augusta, Ga., appears like it will be rather temperate, hovering between 70-80 degrees (20-23 Celsius for the Non-Americans out there) every day. That’s no issue at all. Now, some of the early morning tee times could be a bit cooler before the day really heats up, but it’s not the temperature that should be of concern, it’s the rain.

A wise man once said, “Moisture is the essence of wetness, and wetness is the essence of beauty,” and the storms should have Augusta looking its usual green. But the damp conditions may make the course play even longer than most years. Driving distance and strokes gained off the tee are always heavily emphasized at The Masters, but adding carry distance with the driver may be necessary depending on the actual amount of precipitation that actually hits the course. It’s one thing to smash it with the smoke wagon and let it roll to infinity. It’s another to when the ball eases up in the soft conditions. Although three of the past five leaders in Strokes Gained Approach have found themselves in Butler Cabin, the degree of difficulty on hitting approaches from 200 yards is much higher than from 165 yards like we see in a regular year.

Driving is ultra-important, but accuracy not so much. Look at some of the recent past champs: Sergio Garcia, Adam Scott, Bubba Watson (twice), Danny Willett, Tiger Woods. Even Patrick Reed punched well above his usual baseline at Augusta in his victory, gaining +3.35 strokes with his driver. He’d only gained more than that in two starts in the previous two years before the victory (2017 Travelers and 2017 Memorial) and only three times since (2018 BMW Championship, 2019 NORTHERN TRUST and 2020 Wyndham Championship). A hot putter is always going to factor into the outcome, but positioning off the tee leads to easier iron shots, which results in shorter putts. They say “drive for show and putt for dough,” but that’s really the opposite of how money is made in professional golf.

There are 41 bunkers, six water hazards and a whole lotta pine straw scattered across the grounds. Unless there’s an untimely tree in the way, however, the pine straw isn’t the end of the world. As long as there is a clear path to the green, pine straw has never held anyone back.

The bentgrass greens are around Tour average in size; the major difference is the wild undulations. These are some of the hilliest and fastest putting surfaces the players will encounter all year. The speed and bumps are one of the big reasons course history plays a more significant factor at Augusta than every other course. That’s not anecdotal either. Course history on a week-to-week basis holds very little predictive value at most events, despite the prevailing narrative, but The Masters is an outlier in that regard. The dampness may cause the putting surfaces to run a tad slower than usual, but don’t expect it to be by much. Knowing the undulations isn’t really indicative of someone making a bunch of 15-foot putts for the week, but understanding the speed is critical for lag putting and avoiding extra strokes on the greens.

With the “within 10 strokes of the lead” rule abolished, the Masters DraftKings strategy remains relatively unchanged. Whereas the U.S. Open has 156 players in a normal year, the Masters will still have the highest percentage of the field see the weekend of any major with only 93 players on the grounds. At a minimum, 53% of the field will make the cut. But in reality, it’s actually much higher. Scanning to the bottom of the pricing, where the amateurs and former champs are congregating, reveals a bunch of players with no hope. By my count, there are 14 dead in the water players in the field, and that’s not including the CT Pans of the world. Of those 14, let’s be generous and say four make the weekend. Well, all of a sudden, it’s really like having 83 players in the field, raising the minimum cut rate to 60%.

I harp on this only to show how critical picking the winner is to your DraftKings lineup. Especially in a tournament like the Millionaire Maker. I understand that’s a “well, DUH” statement, but it’s important to your roster construction. It’s fun to take Fred Couples. He may even make the cut. But he’s not going to win. So, what you’ve done is allocate one of six roster spots to someone with no win equity. Since even the best prognosticators don’t know who is going to win, you may as well at least give yourself six viable shots at getting lucky instead of wasting a few of those bullets. Crossing players off the list for any reason, even frivolous ones, narrows your options. You can’t just pick everyone.

In a normal DraftKings golf week, the goal is to get all six players through the cut. Doing that at the Masters isn’t going to guarantee your lineup returns a single cent. Most weeks that’s more than enough to get at least minimum cash, just not here. If two or three popular names are slamming their trunk and hitting the private charter out of Augusta on Friday evening, sure, all the six-of-six lineups are doing great, but if we knew who those players were going to be we’d already be millionaires.

2020 Masters Picks

Bryson DeChambeau $11,200

Dustin Johnson did every Bryson backer a huge solid in Houston by looking great. Initially, paying up for Bryson as the most expensive player was going to be the most popular option. While Bryson, as the betting favorite, certainly won’t be overlooked, it’s much easier to start your rosters with the No. 1 player in the world at just $10,000 on DraftKings. It’s actually a pretty good argument. Pricing at the top doesn’t really matter, though. If you think one of the top five players is going to win, you’re going to need that player in your lineup. I think Bryson is going to win, so I’m picking Bryson. Projecting ownership is critical to make sure you don’t have the same lineup as everyone else, but you need that winner, so don’t let anything talk you off your position if it’s firm. Bryson has simply been preparing for this Masters the entire year. The increased distance, improved short game and lack of focus on short irons all screams Augusta. His game has gotten so good that he picked up a major win along the way. You may have to get creative with the rest of your roster, but making Bryson your anchor is how you should start.

Bubba Watson $9,000

It all boils down to one thing: Can Bubba putt this week? If he does, Bubba enters the week hitting better than any other time in his career. Per Fantasy National, over the past three months, he rates out tops in the field in Strokes Gained: Ball Striking (SG: OTT + SG: APP). Even his short game is clicking at the moment, a rare feat from Bubba. Already a two-time Masters winner, he’s very difficult to pass up at this price when he’s in such great form.

Si Woo Kim $6,800

Don’t let recency bias impact your decision making at the bottom of the pricing. All these are guys are wildly inconsistent and are going to periodically blow up. DraftKings players loaded up on Kim at the Houston Open only to see his irons tank and get him sent home from weekend golf. It’s Si Woo Kim, this is what happens. But now no one wants him. Even in two rounds, the former PLAYERS winner still managed to gain +2.2 strokes off the tee, giving him at least two strokes gained off the tee in each of his past three starts. And Kim’s not as short off the tee as you may think, he’s 30th in this field in driving distance over the past three months. He’s finished top 25 at Augusta the past two years, and while inconsistent, actually possesses the game to make a deep run on Sunday. With people filling out conservative DraftKings lineups at the Masters, you should embrace the volatility and gambling on Si WOOOOOO’s upside.
