Wojnarowski also adds that the Hornets signed Hayward to an offer sheet in 2014 when he was a restricted free agent, but the Utah Jazz matched their offer.

To make room for Hayward on the roster, the Hornets are going to reportedly waive Nicolas Batum and use the league’s stretch provision, per Rick Bonnell of the Charlotte Observer.

The former Boston Celtics forward opted out of the final year of his four-year, $127.8 million deal earlier this week. According to multiple reports, Hayward had received interest from the Indiana Pacers, New York Knicks, along with his former team — the Celtics. The Pacers were a preferred option for Hayward, but the only way that could happen is if Indiana completed a sign-and-trade with Boston, per Marc Stein of the New York Stein.

Last season, Hayward had one of better years in Boston, averaging 17.5 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 4.1 assists in 33.5 minutes per game. He also shot 50 percent from the field and 38.3 percent from three-point range.

The Charlotte Hornets are hoping that Hayward can bring that same type of production over with their young nucleus which now includes LaMelo Ball. However, one does wonder where Hayward fits in their starting lineup as Charlotte has Miles Bridges.

The free agent center is heading back to Sacramento on a one-year deal.

Free agent center Hassan Whiteside is leaving Portland Trail Blazers after one year with the team. The big man is signing a one-year contract with the Sacramento Kings, per ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, and will look to assert himself as one of the better rim protectors in the NBA with a new team.

Portland acquired Whiteside from the Miami Heat last offseason to use him as a temporary Jusuf Nurkic replacement and he thrived during his time as a starter. He was an expensive rental in the final season of a four-year, $98 million deal but averaged 15.5 points and 13.5 rebounds per game while leading the NBA with 196 blocks during the regular season. The Kings could really use the skill set of this double-double machine.

Whiteside was selected in the second round of the 2010 draft by the Kings. He didn’t last in Sacramento though, bolting the NBA for Lebanon and China before making his return. Whiteside was signed by the Heat and turned into one of the premier paint defenders in the League, averaging 2.4 blocks per game in five seasons with Miami. He was dealt to the Blazers and signed that massive deal. Things didn’t totally work out in Portland, however, so Whiteside is landing back where it started.

The Kings needed to bring in a veteran center with little depth on the roster. Alex Len left via free agency for the Raptors and Richaun Holmes is more of a PF than a true 5. So with Holmes and Marvin Bagley III holding down forward, Whiteside has a clear path to playing time at center on a rebuilding SacTown squad. If Whiteside can stay healthy, there’s no reason why he can average a double-double again while being in the top of the NBA in terms of blocks. He’ll retain some fantasy basketball value, if nothing else as a blocks specialist on a weak Kings team.

Sam Amick was the first to say the Kings were leaning toward declining the offer. They had had until midnight tonight to make a decision.
If Bogdanovic indeed ends up with the Hawks, their roster gets even more interesting. Atlanta has had one of the more active free agency periods. The Hawks have signed F Danilo Gallinari, PG Rajon Rondo, G Kris Dunn and drafted C Onyeka Okongwu at No. 6 overall last week. Adding Bogdanovic to a roster that already had PG Trae Young, PF John Collins and C Clint Capela could push the Hawks over the edge and well into the playoff picture heading into 2020-21.

I’m not saying the Hawks are the next Dubs but this roster could be hella close to that type of team in a few seasons. Trae is already mini-Steph. Capela can hold it down in the paint. Collins is your inside scorer, Gallo is the inside-out man. Bogdanovic and Huerter are wings who can knock down open shots off kick-outs from Young.

Ingram was acquired by the Pels in the Anthony Davis trade, the centerpiece of the deal for NOLA. He came through in his first season with the Pelicans, making his first All-Star team after averaging 23.8 points per game. Despite the Pelicans coming short of a playoff berth, life is looking up for Ingram and the rest of the young core.

Ingram is also the latest player coming off a rookie contract to ink an extension. Shams Charania reported earlier that Heat C Bam Adebayo is expected to sign a max extension with Miami. Jayson Tatum and Donovan Mitchell both did the same this offseason coming off rookie deals. All four players are All-Stars, so there’s too much money and incentive to not stick around.

Adebayo is coming off his rookie deal and is eligible to sign the rookie maximum contract of $163 million with the potential to work up to a super max deal of $195.6 million, per Shams.

Adebayo is coming off a breakout season in which he averaged a double-double of 15.9 points and 10.2 rebounds. He also developed into one of the best passing big men in the NBA, averaging 5.1 assists per game. As a result, the Heat were able to make it back to the postseason, going on that memorable run to the NBA Finals in the bubble in 2020. Adebayo was a big reason why Miami was able to shock the Milwaukee Bucks in the second round, providing great post defense on Giannis Antetokounmpo. Adebayo should be a staple in Miami with Jimmy Butler for the foreseeable future.

Adebayo is just one of many All-Stars signing max deals off their rookie contracts. We’ve already seen Donovan Mitchell and Jayson Tatum do the same thing with the Utah Jazz and Boston Celtics, respectively. With how contracts are set up once the rookie deal is up, there’s almost no incentive for All-Star caliber players to test the restricted free agent market. They leave too much money on the table by not being able to sign for five years at the max.

The veteran center had been drawing interest in a shallow center market this offseason. He ends up in Houston with James Harden and Russell Westbrook.

Veteran free agent center DeMarcus Cousins is signing a deal with the Houston Rockets, The Athletic’s Shams Charania reported Monday evening. Cousins had reportedly been drawing interest from multiple teams in a shallow center market. Hassan Whiteside is still out there waiting to be signed, but we’ve seen Serge Ibaka, Tristan Thompson and a few lesser names already sign with teams. The deal is a non-guaranteed, one-year contract, per Shams.

Cousins had been with the Los Angeles Lakers last season but didn’t see the court. He hasn’t played an NBA game since 2018-19 when he was with the Golden State Warriors. The reason being Cousins tore his Achilles and needed plenty of time to recover. Usually it takes about a season or so to recover from this type of injury but it can be longer for players of Cousins’ size (6’10”).

Let’s take a look at how the Rockets look after the deal. For now, we can assume that James Harden and Russell Westbrook aren’t going anywhere. Both have been reported as unhappy and want out of Houston. The Rockets have said they want to hold onto both players and think they can mend the relationship. In an attempt to mend said relationship, the Rockets have added actual bigs. PF Christian Wood was signed to a three-year deal a few days ago and now Boogie enters the mix as a reclamation project of sorts.

So the Rockets — if Boogie is healthy — could enter the 2020-21 season with a starting five of Harden, Westbrook, Eric Gordon, Wood and Cousins. We’ll call it 2.5 All-Stars, a budding young forward and one of the better 3-point specialists in the NBA. Stephen Silas likely won’t play the same type of offense as Mike D’Antoni. That may not be a bad idea with the changes the Rockets have made to the roster. They’ve got some more size and still have two of the best guards in the League.

Jayson Tatum has agreed to sign a max extension with the Celtics.

The Boston Celtics are buckling down by securing their star player for the foreseeable future. Jayson Tatum has agreed to a five-year, $195 million extension with the C’s, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. Tatum is entering the final year of his rookie contract and is eligible to sign the max extension when the window opened up at noon ET on Sunday.

Tatum became an All-Star for the first time in his career last season and led the Celtics in scoring with 23.4 points per game. He helped Boston claim the third seed in the Eastern Conference before tallying team highs in points (25.7) and rebounds (10) per game in the postseason. The 22-year-old wing should remain a vital piece for a Celtics team oozing with talent.

Kemba Walker has three years remaining on the four-year, $140 million contract he signed last season while Jaylen Brown has three years left on the four-year, $115 million extension he signed last offseason. Tatum could be the player who ties it all together for Boston as it looks to reach the NBA Finals for the first time since 2007-08.
