At times Tyson showed flashes of his old self. He wasn’t the terrifying 20-year-old that won the heavyweight championship of the world via first-round knockout, but he still had some power and quickness despite being eligible for a discount when buying matinee tickets at the movie theatre.

The two legends came out even in the end.

The boxing world was on display late Saturday evening, and we got to see two legends duke it out. Former undisputed heavyweight champion Mike Tyson fought former pound-for-pound champion Roy Jones Jr. over eight rounds in a fight that ended with a split decision.

The fight was an exhibition so it does not count toward either fighter’s career record. However, the WBC provided scoring with three boxing Hall of Famers. Christy Martin had it 79-73 for Tyson, Chad Dawson decided it was a 76-76 slate, and Vinny Pazienza had it 80-76.

Both fighters came out of the event healthy thanks to rules that prevented anybody from getting too hurt. The California State Athletic Commission wanted to ensure this was a clear exhibition of ring skills, rather than a battle to knock the other fighter out, and that’s what they got.

Below is some video and pictures from the event. Whether we see either extensively fighting in the future, this one brought back some memories even with both fighters advancing in age.

Boxing legends collide in an exhibition fight on Saturday, November 28th, live from Los Angeles, California. Mike Tyson and Roy Jones Jr. headline a seven-fight card coming to us from STAPLES Center. Six of the seven fights are legit sanctioned fights with traditional boxing rules, while Tyson vs. Jones is a sanctioned exhibition fight with some limitations in the rules.

The event is expected to get underway at 8 p.m. ET with the main card starting up at 9 p.m. Given the four fights on the main card and general boxing timelines, Tyson vs. Jones should get started sometime around 11:30 p.m.

The three-time NBA Slam Dunk Champion looked unprepared for the bout, and was knocked out cold by the Youtube star.

Content creator Jake Paul knocked out former NBA star Nate Robinson in the second round of their fight on the undercard of the bout between Mike Tyson and Roy Jones Jr. on Saturday night in Los Angeles on the Legends Only League card.

Robinson charged forward whenever he could, but showed no boxing skill or any desire to defend from distance with a guard. Paul knocked Robinson down in Round 1, and Robinson was holding the back of his head for so long he couldn’t even touch his gloves together for the referee.

Robinson in Round 2 walked into a right hand and went down in a heap, but got back and seemed a little disinterested. But just several seconds after the ref restarted the fight, he was knocked out cold.

It was good to see Robinson get up to his stool after that punch, because it looked pretty scary, but he was on his stool and lucid as the ring announcer read the decision.

After the bout, Paul said to ringside interviewer Jim Gray the following: “Conor McGregor, Dillon Danis, I’m going to knock both of them out.” Ok, Jake. Settle down.

But with the win, Jake “The Problem Child” Paul does move to 2-0 as a professional boxer. And Nate Robinson, who played college football for the Washington Huskies and tried out for the Seattle Seahawks before a 11-year NBA career, might want to put a bit more focus in technique before getting back in the ring again.

Pro boxing returns to STAPLES Center Saturday evening in a card highlighted by Mike Tyson meeting Roy Jones Jr. in an exhibition fight. The main card gets going at 9 p.m. ET, but a little over 24 hours before, we got the weigh-in for the event. Tyson and Jones weighed in for their heavyweight fight, and we also got the weigh-in for Jake Paul vs. Nate Robinson.

Paul and Robinson are meeting in a cruiserweight fight and both made weight. The cruiserweight class in boxing used to be 190 pounds, but is currently at 200 pounds. Paul weighed in at 189 pounds while Robinson weighed in at 181 pounds. Robinson is a couple inches shorter than Paul, so the size difference will be something to watch when they meet Saturday evening.

Below we’ve got video of the weigh-in as well as some posing the two did after the weigh-in. At one point Paul looked like he wanted to have a traditional face-off, but Robinson seemed to be inclined to turn and walk away.

We get some high profile boxing this weekend, even if it’s questionable how good it will be. Mike Tyson and Roy Jones Jr. top a seven-fight card at STAPLES Center in Los Angeles on Saturday, November 28th. The event starts at 8 p.m. ET, with the main card getting underway at approximately 9 p.m.

Tyson and Jones tops the card, but the penultimate fight on the card will bring a curiosity factor in its own right. YouTube personality Jake Paul is fighting his second career professional fight, and third overall fight, when he takes on former three-time NBA Slam Dunk champion Nate Robinson in a six-round cruiserweight fight.

Paul fought fellow YouTube personality Ali Eson Gib at the beginning of the year, winning via first round TKO in his pro debut. Robinson has never fought in a boxing match before, although he has said he did some boxing training as part of his NBA workouts. He’s been training since, but is still about to have his very first career boxing match.

Mike Tyson and Roy Jones Jr. will meet on Saturday in a heavyweight exhibition fight. On Friday, they weighed in and we’ve got the results and video.

Mike Tyson and Roy Jones Jr. square off on Saturday in an exhibition fight, and Friday afternoon brought us the official weigh-in. Tyson weighed in at 220 pounds, while Jones weighed in at 210 points.

Tyson is actually relatively close to what he weighed for fights in his prime. He’s obviously built a little differently now than he was in his hey-day, but it’s notable that he is not overweight, relatively speaking.

Jones is heavier than he was during his boxing career. At his peak, he fought in the light heavyweight division and weighed in the 165-178 range. When Jones stepped up to heavyweight to face John Ruiz, he weighed in at 193 pounds. Speed was a key to his game, so it will be interesting to see how the weight gain impacts him.

After the two fighters weighed in, we got the customary stare-down as well. Check out video below of all three events.

YouTube personality Jake Paul is fighting Nate Robinson in his second career professional fight. We’ll see if it leads to something bigger.

YouTube personality turned professional boxer Jake Paul takes on former NBA Slam Dunk champion Nate Robinson in a cruiserweight bout Saturday evening at STAPLES Center in Los Angeles. It marks Paul’s second career professional fight and Robinson’s debut at any level of boxing.

The California State Athletic Commission sanctioned the fight and it will operate under traditional rules. There will be six rounds with 10 ounce gloves and no head gear. The exhibition main event featuring Mike Tyson and Roy Jones Jr. could reportedly be stopped if either fighter suffers a cut, but Paul-Robinson will not be operating under those kinds of exhibition rules.

Paul has talked about wanting to pursue a pro boxing career in recent years, but if you have not followed him on YouTube, you probably view this matchup as a bit of a joke. Robinson is a great athlete and has been training to fight, but if Paul wanted to develop a pro career one would think he would go a more conventional route, working his way up through club fighters and the proverbial tomato cans that could help him build his skills and work his way up.

This week, Paul spoke with our friends at The Verge about everything from his YouTube career to his boxing career. In describing Saturday’s fight, he put on the sell job in promoting Robinson as a serious opponent in the ring.

For me, it’s a perfect fight because everyone thinks I’m just this YouTube pretty kid. And everyone thinks that he’s this buff NBA athlete. But on Saturday, people are gonna see how serious I’m taking the sport and how good I am at the sport. And I plan on knocking out him in the first round.

He hasn’t faced legit professional boxers in his two career fights, and he gave a bit of a sideways answer when asked if he wanted to “get in the ring with people who are pro boxers.”

I want to. I want to bring MMA fighters from the UFC over into the ring and go head to head with them. I want to prove myself, and prove how good I am at this sport. In sparring, I’m fighting pro boxers all the time. WBA champs, WBC champs. And I’m going head to head with them. So, you know, these YouTubers and celebrities and all these people can get the smoke first, and then it’s on to professional fighters for sure.

He says he wants to get in the ring with pro boxers, but quickly pivots to talking about bringing over MMA fighters. That’s a step up from fighting the likes of Robinson and fellow YouTube personality Ali Eson Gib, but it’s still not the traditional type of skilled boxer.

Clearly Jake Paul has not taken a traditional path to professional boxing, so it should surprise nobody his pro career will feature as much curiosity factor as anything else. His comments about his career suggest a fighter more interested in the spectacle than the sport.

In July, he tweeted about becoming “one of the biggest prize fighters in the world” and said “gimme 36 months.” In his interview with The Verge, he was asked about that and he said his progress is “going good” in part because “the pay-per-view is on pace to be one of the biggest.” While plenty are going to buy this PPV, I think we can all agree it’s because of Mike Tyson vs. Roy Jones, Jr. and not Jake Paul vs. Nate Robinson.

Good luck to Jake Paul in his pro career, but until he starts facing legitimate boxers, we’ll hold off on assuming this is anything more than a chance to build his brand and make some money. There’s nothing wrong with doing that, but let’s not pretend it’s what it’s not.
