Alabama quarterback Mac Jones is a Heisman finalist and is looking to lead Alabama to the national title. We’ll track his performance throughout the Rose Bowl.

The Alabama Crimson Tide face the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in the 2021 Rose Bowl. Quarterback Mac Jones closes out a potential Heisman Trophy campaign with a chance to advance Alabama to the College Football Playoff National Championship Game. We’ll be tracking his performance in the Rose Bowl.

Jones was one of the most successful quarterbacks in America in 2020, finishing the regular season with 3,739 yards and 32 touchdowns against just four interceptions. With a 76.5% completion rate, he guided one of the most lethal offenses in college football this season.

Final

Mac Jones finished 25-30 for 297 yards and four touchdowns, while also having six carries for 18 yards. If he does win the Heisman it would be a bit of an upset, but he would certainly be a worthy winner after his regular season and performance today.

After third quarter

It’s all over but the trophy presentation. Jones is 22-26 for 283 yards and four touchdowns, as well as having four carries for 20 yards scrambling. He’s played terrific today, and deserves his Heisman candidacy.

Update: 4:58 third quarter

Jones throws for his fourth touchdown of the day, and is 20-23 for 258 yards. But to be fair, when you’re throwing to DeVonta Smith... a lot of quarterbacks could do this.

The heavily favored Alabama Crimson Tide easily dispatched Notre Dame Fighting Irish in a Rose Bowl semifinal as DeVonta Smith cemented his status as the nation’s top player.

ARLINGTON, Texas — The No. 1-seeded Alabama Crimson Tide easily dispatched the No. 4 seeded Notre Dame Fighting Irish 31-14 during a Rose Bowl semifinal displaced by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The Crimson Tide cruised to the victory on the back of Heisman favorite DeVonta Smith, who hauled in seven passes for 130 yards and three touchdowns.

The game opened ominously for Notre Dame, who entered as the largest underdog in the history of the College Football Playoff. Returner Chris Tyree fumbled the opening kickoff and set up the Fighting Irish inside their 10-yard line. Quarterback Ian Book threw a backward pass out of bounds for another fumble two plays later, effectively dooming the drive and handing over a possession Alabama in the process.

From there, the Crimson Tide laid into the Irish. The first of Smith’s touchdowns capped off seven-play drive that never saw a third down. Alabama forced a punt on the following possession and responded with a 97-yard drive, 53 of which came on a magnificent run from running back Najee Harris who hurdled Notre Dame defensive back Nick McCloud in the open field.

At that point, the Fighting Irish finally sprung back to life. Book and running back Kyren Williams sparked a 15-play drive that finished in the end zone and cut the Crimson Tide lead to a single score.

But the swing proved to be short-lived. Alabama quarterback Mac Jones ran or threw on every snap of a six-play drive, completing the series with a 34-yard connection with Smith to re-establish a two-possession lead. The Irish would never come within 14 points the rest of the way.

With the semifinal in the rearview mirror, Alabama can turn its attention to a national championship game that will also feature the winner of a Sugar Bowl matchup of the Ohio State Buckeyes or Clemson Tigers. Should the Tigers emerge victorious, it would mark the fourth time they will face the Crimson Tide for the national championship in the last six years.

Did Alabama find a cover in the Rose Bowl? Did the total come in? We check on everything that happened from an odds perspective here.

Ian Book’s touchdown with 56 seconds remaining may have been academic for the outcome of the Rose Bowl between Alabama and Notre Dame, but his one-yard rushing score certainly made a lot of money move at DraftKings Sportsbook and beyond.

Notre Dame closed as a 19.5-point favorite at DraftKings, and the late TD made the final score 31-14 which made the Irish the winner if you had them against the spread. The line didn’t move too much from the open until kickoff, so basically everyone that had ND came away a winner because of the 14-play, 80-yard drive that took 5:32 off the game clock.

It’s not surprising that this had many people on social media both happy and sad.

For those Heisman voters who did not select DeVonta Smith, they might want to reconsider because he put on another incredible performance in the Rose Bowl. Currently listed as the Heisman favorite according to DraftKings Sportsbook, Smith could be the first at his position to win the award since 1991 with Michigan’s Desmond Howard.
Notre Dame quarterback Ian Book will need a big game to stick with the Alabama offense. We’ll be tracking his performance during the Rose Bowl.

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish are squaring off against the Alabama Crimson Tide in the 2021 Rose Bowl for a spot in the national title game. Notre Dame quarterback Ian Book will likely need a big-time performance to stick with Alabama in this game. He put together a good season, but we’ll see if it will be enough to hang with an offense like the Crimson Tide. We’ll be tracking his performance throughout the game.

As a senior, Book put together a productive season running the Notre Dame offense, highlighted by a 47-40 double-overtime victory over Clemson earlier this year. Coming into this game, Book completed 64% of his passes for 2,601 yards with 15 touchdowns and two interceptions.

12:45 fourth quarter

Book re-enters the game at quarterback and takes over down 31-7. He is 13-17 for 105 yards and an interception so far today.

4:25 third quarter

Book appears to have been injured on a play and came off the field hurt after taking this sack. Drew Pyne replaced Book at quarterback for the next several plays.

After second quarter

Book helped lead ND to their first score of the game via a 15-play, 75-yard touchdown drive that took 8:03 off the clock. But he’s at just 10-13 for 84 yards so far. His most impressive feat so far today might be not turning the ball over in the face of all this Alabama pressure.

After first quarter

There wasn’t much Book could do with Crimson Tide defenders smelling his breath on every down, but the quarterback admirably went 2-4 for 33 yards in the first quarter. He also carried the ball four times for eight yards, mostly by running away from massive and talented young men not wearing his jersey.

True freshman Drew Pyne entered the game at quarterback for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and finished off the drive, completing one pass for seven yards.
