With a massive wreck on the last lap, by NASCAR rule the driver in front when the yellow flag comes out wins.

Michael McDowell got through the traffic of a massive crash on the last lap unscathed, and he is the winner of the 2021 Daytona 500.

It’s the first win of Michael McDowell’s NASCAR career in 357 career starts. He had three career Top 3’s finishes, and only 88 laps led in 13 years and one start of NASCAR Cup racing.

McDowell was 80-1 at DraftKings Sportsbook to win the race as the green flag dropped.

NASCAR rules state that when the caution flag comes out when there’s a wreck on the last lap, the car that’s in front when the caution comes out is the winner. McDowell in the #34 was in third place on the final lap, but his fellow Ford drivers Brad Keselowski and Joey Logano in front of him wrecked, leaving McDowell to win the race.

In a race where single file racing was mostly the norm, drivers weren’t able to find a groove outside the high line of the track. It made passing on the low side more difficult, and kept the racing from truly being open. While Denny Hamlin led 82 laps and seemed to have the best car all day, he fell back after his final pit stop and was unable to find the track position to recover.

The Great American Race kicks off at 2:30 p.m. on Fox, and we’ll be here covering all the action for the Super Bowl of stock car racing.

12:30 a.m. Michael McDowell was +8000 to win the race at DraftKings Sportsbook. Which makes sense since he’s literally never won a NASCAR Cup race in 357 starts. He’s only got three Top 5’s and had only led 88 career laps!

12:20 a.m. ANOTHER BIG ONE! Logano, Keselowski, Preece, Elliott, Kyle Busch, fall out... and Michael McDowell just won the Daytona 500. For his first career win. Are you kidding me??

12:10 a.m. 10 to go on the beach. Four Fords (Logano, Harvick, Keselowski, McDowell) and a Chevy (Dillon). The big question now is do we get a caution or overtime? Otherwise Ford will win Daytona most likely.

12:00 a.m. Did we wait until midnight to post this on purpose? Oh indeed. It’s some #WeirdNASCAR for you baseball fans out there.

Denny Hamlin had a great stop, but his fellow Toyotas in Bubba Wallace and Kyle Busch couldn’t get out as fast. Wallace also had a loose wheel vibration out of the pits, and if you don’t have friends you don’t have a chance at Daytona.

There’s five Fords at the front right now: Logano, Harvick, Custer, Keselowski, and McDowell.

11:42 p.m. We’re coming up on the fuel window, which should be around Lap 170-174 depending on team strategy. Right now it’s Hamlin, Harvick, and Logano up front with plenty of single file racing, but there’s been a decent amount of passing throughout this race.

It might come down to the impending pit stop to come, which is about seven laps from right now...

11:13 p.m. We’re 70 laps from Denny Hamlin needing a statue outside the gates of Daytona International Speedway. He takes the second stage with an assist from the car he owns driven by Bubba Wallace. Could we be looking at the first three-peat at Daytona tonight? It’s possible.

Here’s the Top 10 from Stage 2:

Meanwhile Denny Hamlin comes back from caution in the lead with 13 to go in Stage 2.

10:58 p.m. Another wreck! So much for going easy! It’s Christopher Bell (again, he’s not making friends out here), Ricky Stenhouse Jr., and maybe some others.

If you had “Ricky Stenhouse wrecks at Daytona” on your Bingo card, you’re cheating because you already have a free space. But this doesn’t look like it was his fault, as Bell just lost a left front tire (that he didn’t change during his pit stop). Kyle Larson, Corey Lajoie, Kaz Grala, and Jamie McMurray are involved as well.

10:45 p.m. It’s been a ton of green flag, single file racing in Stage 3, likely because these drivers are as tired as the people watching and they don’t want anything crazy to happen either. Some cars are starting to pit around Lap 40 of the 65-lap stage.

And we’ve crossed 100 laps, which means no matter what, the race will be official tonight. If the weather comes again, everyone will race to the line as that might be the official end.

10:08 p.m. Less than two hours from midnight, Denny Hamlin gets across the line first to win Stage 1 after 65 laps of racing.

Ryan Preece and Austin Dillon pick up 2nd and 3rd respectively, and the first stage points of the season go to the two-time defending champion of this race. Could we see a three-peat at 3 a.m.?? Jamie McMurray gets the free pass and will make up a lap here under caution.

Here’s the Top 10 after Stage 1

Denny Hamlin
Ryan Preece
Austin Dillon
Kyle Larson
Austin Cindric
Christopher Bell
Bubba Wallace
Joey Logano
Ross Chastain
Cole Custer

9:40 p.m. And speaking of cautions: Quin Houff and Chase Briscoe get tangled. They were running in 22nd and 23rd position, but that means the yellow flag is back out. This race might end by March if we’re lucky. Houff said he hit the quarter panel from William Byron that fell off as he got back on the track.

9:35 p.m. The green flag finally drops on Lap 30, and look at that Denny Hamlin is in the lead at the Daytona 500. 29 cars remain on the track, and 24 are on the lead lap. Jamie McMurray, Tyler Reddick, William Byron, Martin Truex Jr., and Kurt Busch will all be looking for the free pass under the next caution: They’re all two to four laps behind.

9:15 p.m. Here’s who’s out: Anthony Alfredo and Matt DiBendetto couldn’t get the car fixed in six minutes or less, so they’re done. Add them to Aric Almirola, Alex Bowman, Daniel Suarez, David Ragan, Ryan Newman, Erik Jones, and the previously eliminated Derrike Cope.

9:00 p.m. Well here we go! All the cars that have wrecked are on pit road, and the damage vehicles will be worked on from the pit boxes as we restart here. It’s going to be a late night, and we’re probably ending after midnight no matter what happens from here on out.

8:15 p.m. We’ve got a time! NASCAR says we’ll be back racing at approximately 9 p.m., and the dryers continue to take laps of the track. No matter how long it takes, we’ll be here to cover the race when it restarts.

6:05 p.m. Carl Spackler might say “I don’t think the hard stuff is coming down for awhile.” But yeah, this might take quite a bit to get settled.

3:15 p.m. The weather is going to be a factor today, as once any rain hits the track all the drivers will head to the garage until the track is dried. And it looks like we might be delayed here sooner rather than later.

The Great American Race takes place Valentine’s Day this year. We’ve got the full racing order for Sunday’s Daytona 500.

Raceday update: Bubba Wallace has been moved to the back of the field after twice failing pre-race inspection. He was previously set to start sixth. He joins the nine below at the back of the pack.

Saturday update: The starting lineup will see some changes heading into race day. The following drivers are being moved to the back of the starting lineup due to a variety of reasons. Martin Truex Jr. is moving back because of a radiator/oil cooler change, Erik Jones is moving back because of an engine change, and the rest are moving back because they are moving to backup cars. We’ll update the starting lineup once it’s made official.

Brad Keselowski
Chase Briscoe
Kaz Grala
Anthony Alfredo
William Byron
Cole Custer
Ross Chastain
Erik Jones
Martin Truex Jr

The 2021 Daytona 500 will have a limited crowd, but if the racing from the Duel races on Thursday night is any indication, there won’t be much room on the track at all.

Alex Bowman of Hendrick Motorsports is scheduled to start on the pole, but his engine looked to have problems during Duel 1, and if it’s replaced he’ll be forced to start from the back of the field. His teammate William Byron was supposed to be on the outside of Row 1, but he got in wreck with four to go in Duel 2, and his car looked torn up enough where he might be in the back as well.

Aric Almirola won Duel 1, keeping the streak of Tampa Bay winning everything in a pandemic world still intact. A great piece from driving from Austin Dillon moved him under Bubba Wallace just yards from the checkered flag, and he gets the win in Duel 2. And with the issues above, that might be enough to put him on the front row for the Great American Race.

Here is the full lineup for Sunday’s 2021 Daytona 500 as of now, but this is subject to change if cars or engines are needed to be changed.

The starting lineup is set for The Great American Race. We break down how odds changed from opening to Friday.

Update February 14th 2:20 p.m. Just 10 minutes before the broadcast starts, here are the complete odds to win the Daytona 500 at DraftKings Sportsbook:

The Daytona 500 starting lineup is officially set. The first row was settled on Wednesday and the remaining 38 spots were finalized on Friday. Alex Bowman and William Byron will start the race on the front row, and Austin Cindric and Kaz Grala will start the race on the back row.

The finalized starting lineup brings with it some shifting odds at DraftKings Sportsbook. Starting position does not guarantee anything in The Great American Race, but it can influence bettors. We have not seen huge changes, but there has been some movement since Denny Hamlin opened as a +700 favorite.

Hamlin is going to start the race in the 25th position. His odds to win took a hit, moving from +700 to +800, but his odds to finish top 3 improved from +230 to +225. Hamlin has won the last two races and no driver has won three straight Daytona 500s.

Although Bowman and Byron will start on the front row and likely will get some laps led under one or both of their belts, their odds to win took a hit. Bowman opened at +1800 and is now +2000, while Byron opened at +1400 and is now +1600. This is Bowman’s second Daytona 500 pole and fourth straight year he’s opened the race on the front row. the past three years he has finished 24th, 11th, and 17th. This is the second time in three years Byron has opened on the front row at Daytona. He finished 21st in 2019 when he had the pole position.

Joey Logano saw the biggest boost at the top of the odds board. He opened at +1100 and tied for third best odds, but is now +900 and has the second best odds. He won the Daytona 500 in 2015.

We go over who the public is backing to win the Daytona 500 at DraftKing Sportsbook.

Sports bettors are placing their wagers for the Great American Race, as the 2021 NASCAR Cup Series Daytona 500 is set to run on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. ET. Wanna know who the public is backing? Let’s go over the betting splits for drivers that bettors are heavy on at DraftKings Sportsbook.

It’s not surprising that Denny Hamlin (+750) is the people’s champ. The favorite has won two straight Daytona 500s and three of the last five. He commands 21% of the handle and 16% of the total bets on Daytona 500 winner wagers. Only one other driver cracks 10% of the handle or total bets.

Chase Elliott (+1000) has the second-best odds to win and is expected to follow up his 2020 Cup Series Championship with a strong start. Wagers on Elliot make up 14% of the handle and total bets. He’s never won the Daytona 500, but that could change this year. He’s trailed by Kyle Busch (+1400). He managed just one win in 2020 despite having won the championship in 2018. He kicked off the 2021 season with win a win at the Busch Clash, and the public believes he has a shot at securing another victory on Sunday. Busch wagers make up 8% of the handle and total bets.

The top five is rounded out by Joey Logano (+1200) and Ryan Blaney (+1200). Logano won the Daytona 500 in 2015 and commands 6% of the handle and 7% of the total bets. Blaney hasn’t won the Great American Race yet controls 7% of the handle and total bets.

He’ll start from behind, sitting in 25th on the grid to start. Hamlin has won three Daytona 500s in the last five years and can use his experience to his advantage, though. Last year’s Cup Series champ, Chase Elliott, has the second-best odds (+1000) but has never won the Daytona 500. Joey Logano won the race in 2015 and has odds even with Elliott’s. Alex Bowman (+2000) is the pole sitter at the Daytona 500 for the second time in four years.

We get you caught up with all the action from Daytona International Speedway and the Duel 125s to set the field for the Great American Race.

12:53 a.m. With plenty of cars torn up, this grid likely won’t hold, but as of now here’s the full grid for the 2021 Daytona 500. But it seems like both drivers scheduled to be on the front row, Richard Childress Racing teammates Alex Bowman and William Byron, might both be in the back of the field instead. Bowman’s power issues might be enough where he’s forced to replace his engine and start in the back by rule, and Byron’s car got pretty torn up with four to go in Duel 2.

Austin Cindric and Kaz Grala join Ryan Preece and David Ragan as the non-chartered drivers in the race.

12:24 a.m. What a move by Austin Dillon on the last lap, who goes under Bubba Wallace attempting to block in the last straightaway, and he takes the Twin.

Bubba got a tremendous push from Kyle Busch underneath, and Kevin Harvick gave to Dillon on the high side, but it forced Wallace to try and block which just left him exposed. Nothing he could do.

12:22 a.m. We’re going green-white-checker in NASCAR Overtime to finish it. It’s Truex Jr, Wallace, Kyle Busch, Dillon, and Kurt Busch as they take the green.

12:13 a.m. Weird racing after midnight, and we got a big one in a little race! Garrett Smithley comes down off the high line, Brad Keselowski was coming up, and they met in the middle of the infield.

About eight cars are involved, but five appear to be done, including William Byron who was set to be on the outside pole. He’ll likely have to replace his car before the race, so now he’ll start in the back of the field. Ross Chastain is done, Noah Gregson is done, so that means it looks likely Kaz Grala will be in the Daytona 500 as a non-chartered driver as well.

11:57 p.m. Anthony Alfredo has waved the white flag and is behind the wall. The rookie will be at the back of the field on Saturday likely in 38th position. B.J. McLeod was out earlier.

Will be 20 to go and everyone will have fuel when we the green flag drops again.

11:55 p.m. Just ahead of the pit window on Lap 36, we’ve got a wreck! Chase Briscoe either got loose on the high line in two wide, and he slid towards the infield taking Kaz Grala, Anthony Alfredo, and Garrett Smithley with him.

Grala and Smithley are two of the cars trying to transfer in to the race. The third attempting to find a spot, Noah Gregson, is currently in the middle of a long pit stop. It’s going to be whomever survives to get the last spot in the field for the Great American Race.

Harvick, Byron, Blaney, Keselowski, and Truex Jr. come out of the pits 1-2-3-4-5 under caution.

11:15 p.m. We are back. The green flag drops on the (eventually) dry race track and we are under way!

8:50 p.m. We are in a rain delay at Daytona, and it looks like it might not be subsiding soon. We’ll holler once we’re back on the surface, but it does look like they’ll get the race in this evening despite the weather.

8:25 p.m. We now know half the grid for the 2021 Daytona 500. Here it is in order:

1 Alex Bowman
3 Aric Almirola
5 Christopher Bell
7 Ryan Newman
9 Joey Logano
11 Ryan Preece
13 Kyle Larson
15 Daniel Suarez
17 Michael McDowell
19 Jamie McMurray
21 Ricky Stenhouse Jr.
23 Matt DiBenedetto
25 Denny Hamlin
27 Cole Custer
29 Tyler Reddick
31 Austin Cindric
33 Erik Jones
35 Quin Houff
37 Cody Ware
39 Josh Bilicki

8:07 p.m. Aric Almirola takes Duel 1! He actually got passed by Joey Logano on the last lap, but a push from the #20 of Christopher Bell got him back in the lead just ahead of the tri-oval, and he flew across the line first for the checkered flag. The driver from Hillsborough High School in Tampa becomes another winner for Tampa Bay this year.

Austin Cindric, despite taking a pit penalty, will end up in the field. While Ryan Preece was the highest-finishing non-chartered driver, he was already qualified from last night’s pole qualifying, therefore Cindric advances to the 500.

7:57 p.m. Good news for Bowman is he’s back on the track even though he’s basically in testing mode right now.

The bad news is Duel 2 looks like it very possibly will be delayed due to weather.
