Green Bay QB will return for another season despite early playoff exit in 2021.

March 15 update: Rodgers has put pen to paper, per NFL Network. It is reportedly a four-year deal with some dummy years included, per Ian Rapoport. The deal includes $42 million in 2022, $59.515M in 2023, and $49.3M in 2024, with the first two years fully guaranteed, per Tom Pelissero.

Afternoon update: Aaron Rodgers posted on his personal Twitter account, confirming that he’d be returning to play with the Packers in 2022. However, he clarified that he has not yet signed a contract and the terms he and the team reportedly agreed to are incorrect.

While many thought this past season would be it, Green Bay Packers QB Aaron Rodgers is giving it another go. Despite all the turmoil that surrounded the offseason, followed by claiming the top overall seed and losing in the playoffs again, Rodgers has decided to return for at least one more campaign with the Packers. The news is not official yet, but Pat McAfee, who brings Rodgers on his popular podcast regularly, is reporting the news.

UPDATE: Ian Rapoport is reporting Rodgers has agreed to terms on a four-year, $200M deal with $153 million guaranteed.

It’s a bit surprising after everything that went down in 2021, a season that ended with a Divisional round loss to the Niners. Instead of leaving the franchise or retiring, Rodgers will be back for at least one more season.

Rodgers hasn’t really lost a step at QB despite being 38 years old. He’s coming off what will likely be another MVP season. A-Rod threw for 37 TDs and just 4 INTs with 4,115 yards passing over 16 games in 2021. He led the NFL in passer rating (111.9) and QBR (69.3) for a second consecutive year. Rodgers also helped lead the Packers to another NFC North division crown and the best record in the NFL at 13-4.

The return of Rodgers likely means the same for WR Davante Adams, who becomes a free agent this offseason. The Packers most likely move is to franchise tag Adams on a one-year deal and let him walk after this season, giving it another shot at reaching the Super Bowl. The Packers would also have a shot at retaining Adams in free agency if all goes well.

If Rodgers and Adams are gone, the Packers can focus on rebuilding, something that may not be as difficult as it appears. Jordan Love will have sat behind Rodgers for three seasons (sounds familiar?). Love will have a good grasp on the offense and the Packers have both RBs Aaron Jones and AJ Dillon under contract through at least 2023. The defense is young and intact. The offensive line has plenty of talent. The one goal would be developing Love and replenishing the wide receiving core.

With Rodgers and Adams back, the Packers should be among the favorites to win the Super Bowl and NFC North again. The Packers are 12/1 to win the Super Bowl in 2022 with the bulk of the team returning. Green Bay should also be considered a heavy favorite to win the NFC North.

Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers are discussing a short-term contract that would make him the highest paid player in the league, per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. Rapoport also said that Rodgers hasn’t made up his mind on his next move, which seems odd considering this news. It seems the contract negotiations are there in case he decides to stay with the Packers?

However you look at this news, it’s hard not to see it as positive for the Packers in their quest to get Rodgers back for at least another season. The quarterback appears to have a much better relationship with Packers management after last off-season when the relationship was apparently at an all-time low.

The odds at DraftKings Sportsbook are -330 for Rodgers to be the Packers quarterback for 2022 and this report only seems to reinforce Green Bay as the overwhelming favorite to keep their back-to-back MVP in the fold.

It’s no secret A-Rod wasn’t happy with management in Green Bay, but will that displeasure finally come to a head and see him shipped new in 2022

There’s no doubt that Aaron Rodgers is one of the best quarterbacks of all time and the Green Bay Packers have benefitted from his talents for the better part of two decades. But very public frustration with the franchise and a cryptic post on Instagram has speculation stirring about what it means for his future.

While no official move has been made, it seems like Rodgers is the most likely high-profile player to find a new home this offseason. There are plenty of good options of places for him to head to as well. DraftKings Sportsbook had odds on where he would end up next, but those odds were pulled recently. Still, you can keep up to date on odds for several other players' futures, like Russell Wilson and Deshaun Watson, here.

Despite all the speculation and noted animosity between the two parties, the Packers were still the favorite to retain the quarterback’s services into next season (-250). But it wasn’t a heavy favorite. The Denver Broncos (+350) were close behind, which makes sense with the talented wide receiver corps. It makes even more sense after Denver hired former Packers offensive coordinator Nate Hackett, who Rodgers is reportedly very close with, to be the new head coach.

The San Francisco 49ers (+800) are also a real possibility. The team has shown that it can make deep playoff runs and even Super Bowl appearances over the last few years despite mediocre quarterback play. Plug Rodgers into the equation and they’re an automatic Super Bowl contender.

Here’s the list of odds on the chances each of the NFL’s 32 teams add the future Hall of Famer to their roster during the offseason.

News and rumors on Aaron Rodgers’ off season decision

Green Bay Packers quarterback and back-to-back MVP Aaron Rodgers has not yet made his mind up on his future. The Packers are prepared to back up the Brinks’ truck to keep him around, but he could also choose retirement or try to force a trade this offseason The most recent rumors come from NFL insider Jeremy Fowler of ESPN. He reports that a former Broncos player with more than just speculation, believes “it’s only a matter of time before Aaron Rodgers ends up in Denver.”

The addition of ex-Packers offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett as the Broncos new head coach has done nothing to dispel the rumors that Rodgers could end up in Denver. We also know that Rodgers doesn’t want to be part of a rebuild and the Broncos team is full of strong players outside the quarterback position.

It would be interesting to see if Rodgers could take a young, but talented receiving group to the Super Bowl, repeating in some ways what Peyton Manning and Tom Brady did in their last few years in the league.

The Packers face their most important offseason in a long time.

The Green Bay Packers face a difficult situation this offseason with quarterback Aaron Rodgers. It’s been a dramatic year and his status for 2022 is unclear. However, the Packers are making it public that they want to do what it takes to keep him around at least one more year.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported on Super Bowl Sunday that the Packers are willing “to go all in for Aaron Rodgers in 2022.” His sources tell him the team is prepared to “spend[] as close to the cap this year and spreading it into future years as much as possible.”

It doesn’t really help the team that this situation is playing out in public. And it is not a vote of confidence for Jordan Love, who the team moved up in the 2020 NFL Draft to pick in the first round. Rodgers has won two straight MVPs since the pick, but the team has come up short in their bid for another Lombardi Trophy.

They head into the 2022 offseason projected at near $50 million over the estimated 2022 salary cap, per Over The Cap. They have several notable free agents, but none is bigger than wide receiver Davante Adams. The team appears ready to sacrifice future years to try and make Rodgers happy this coming year.

The Saints have been able to get around cap issues for years, although they face a host of questions a year removed from Drew Brees’ retirement. It can work, but the team’s front office has a lot of work in front it the next few weeks leading up to free agency.

This news has already pushed sportsbooks to take down their NFC North and Packers related odds. Nothing is set in stone yet, but the Packers seem to have gotten the message and have been trying their best to get Rodgers back in the fold. Oh, and they will once again have a real shot at winning a Super Bowl.

The Packers report to training camp in a few days. We’ll see if Aaron Rodgers joins them.

The Green Bay Packers report for training camp on Tuesday, July 27, and with only a few days of the offseason remaining, we have our biggest rumor yet around quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

Sportsbooks have made adjustments to their Packers team and Rodgers individual odds, and some have been taking the Packers off the board entirely. SI.com Packers writer Bill Huber reported the Westgate SuperBook “recently closed all its NFC North markets, including projected wins, playoff odds, divisional odds and weekly lines for the four division teams, one oddsmaker at the sportsbook said via a Twitter direct message.”

Huber followed up stating that two other sportsbooks told him they had an expectation that Rodgers would announce his retirement before the Packers’ first practice next Wednesday.

They posted them back in late March after the NFL announced plans for a 17-game schedule, but they came down after.

So what does this mean? Pro Football Talk talked about how sportsbooks “usually know what’s going on” and a source told them “Vegas oddsmakers tend to be pretty sharp.” While that is true, this is also a situation that seems to be in flux. You could jump on some other NFC North teams for divisional odds if you can find them, but that’s still a roll of the dice at this point. Maybe Rodgers retires or sits out the year, but that seems like the least likely result of this situation.

There will be plenty of chatter heading into training camp, but Aaron Rodgers isn’t going anywhere.

Aaron Rodgers is playing football for the Green Bay Packers this season.

That means you can breathe easy if you are a Packers fan or have already picked up a lot of Packers skill guys in best ball drafts.

It also means if you were taking a lot of flyers on some pass catchers in Denver, for example, with the hope that maybe the Broncos could trade for Rodgers, it’s time to go ahead and hope that Drew Lock can show some Josh Allen-like improvement in year three.

My fervent belief in Rodgers playing for the Packers also should be taken into consideration for any of you that are inclined to throw in some season win total bets anytime soon for either the Pack or any of the teams previously rumored to be in the mix for the reigning league MVP.

Why am I so confident? Lots of reasons I suppose but, more than anything, the comments that Rodgers has made himself recently.

Let’s start with “The Match” in Montana on July 6th when Rodgers was asked if he would be playing for the Packers in Week 1.

“I don’t know. We’ll see, won’t we.”

My former player antenna went up immediately because every time I had a teammate that was really upset with the organization, or even just watching other malcontents around the league, their temperament and language were way different than that of Rodgers.

Either personally or through an intermediary, likely a media mouthpiece or their agent, they made it very clear they would never play for the organization again and “demanded” a trade. And even then, they would still come back to the team a decent amount of the time, often with some sort of minor adjustment to their contract.

What about retirement, you say?

Like Blutarsky’s GPA in Animal House (check it out, millennials, it’s amazing), the chances of that happening are 0.0.

First of all, Rodgers would have to pay back $23 million in signing bonus proration and the $6.8 million roster bonus he got earlier this offseason. He’s not doing that. Nobody does that.

Secondly, again, just listen to what he has said publicly on the matter, most recently at the American Century Golf event in Lake Tahoe.

When asked his plans he said he was going to enjoy the heck out of the week in Nevada and then “get back to working out and figure things out in a couple of weeks”.

Guys that are seriously considering retirement don’t proclaim they are going to get back to working out.

That’s not to say he will show up for the first day of training camp. He’s taken it this far and genuinely seems to enjoy the intrigue and attention that stems from his uncertain status. He might decide to take it a little further for multiple reasons.

For one, he doesn’t really need to be there for the first couple weeks of training camp and, according to former Packers executive Andrew Brandt on a recent Ross Tucker Football Podcast, the Packers might not feel like they need him there right away either.

“You know my saying: Deadlines spur action,” Brandt told me, “And somehow I don’t think training camp is the deadline for Aaron and the Packers. What is it? Late August? Early September? He doesn’t need training camp. … I don’t think training camp is the deadline at all. And secretly like (with) minicamp, the Packers wouldn’t mind that because they could give (backup quarterback) Jordan Love real reps.”

There are other, more logic-based reasons to think Rodgers isn’t going anywhere.

He’s smart enough to realize his best chance to get to and win another Super Bowl, which by all accounts is a huge priority of his, is in Green Bay. For all the handwringing over some of their draft picks he still has arguably the best wide receiver in the NFL in Davante Adams, a perennial Pro Bowl left tackle in David Bakhtiari, and one of the top ten running backs in the game in Aaron Jones. Where’s he going right now where the people around him would be better than that?

Plus, he thrived in Matt LaFleur’s system a year ago. Do we really think he believes he has a better chance to win it all this year in a loaded AFC in general and going head-to-head with Patrick Mahomes in the AFC West in particular, while acclimating himself to new teammates in Denver or Las Vegas, two of the much-rumored teams? Of course not.

Besides all that, there is one more very simple reason why Rodgers will play for the Packers this season: he doesn’t really have a choice.

“They’re not trading Aaron,” Brandt told me, “And he can’t trade himself.”

So, then what exactly is the end game here?

“I think he’ll play for the Packers this year … and somewhere else in 2022,” said Brandt. “He’ll make some noise at training camp … there’ll be some kind of acquiescence by the Packers, either financial or adjust his contract so easier to get out next year but something will happen so they kiss and make up.”

And most importantly for our purposes, barring injury Rodgers will play in every game this season for the Green Bay Packers.
