The Panthers have decided to hire Frank Reich as their next head coach. We break down what it all means.

The Carolina Panthers will hire ex-Colts head coach Frank Reich as their head coach, per Adam Schefter. Reich was let go by Jim Irsay and the Colts after a poor start to the 2022 season. He will now move on to Carolina to guide a Panthers team that played well under interim head coach Steve Wilks after they fired head coach Matt Rhule during the season.

Reich was the Panthers first ever quarterback when they became an expansion team in 1995, where had three starts and no wins. After a Week 4 bye week, Reich was replaced by Kerry Collins. Of course, Reich was never a true starting quarterback and didn’t really shine until he got into the coaching ranks.

The pinnacle, so far, for Reich was as the offensive coordinator of the Eagles, who led the league in points scored and beat the Patriots in the Super Bowl. That win led him to become the Colts head coach, which had a great Andrew Luck at the helm, at least for one season. But, even with Luck retiring after one season with Reich, the Colts still managed winning records while being in quarterback hell.

Reich managed a 40-33-1 record with Sam Ehlinger, Matt Ryan, Carson Wentz, Philip Rivers, Jacoby Brissett, Brian Hoyer, and Andrew Luck as his starters, and we know Ryan and Rivers were on their last legs.

The Cowboys final play against the 49ers was not something Steve Smith wants to see in Carolina.

Ex-Panthers standout receiver Steve Smith was not a fan of the Cowboys final play against the 49ers in the Divisional Round. If you missed the play, it did appear comical, as running back Ezekiel Elliott lined up as the center and the only player on the offensive line, with the rest of the team lined up out wide in hopes to score in improbably touchdown with time running out.

Moore has interviewed for the Panthers HC job and probably has at least a fighter’s chance of landing the position. How much this single play can tell you about an offensive coordinator that has had Top 5 offenses the last two seasons is unclear, but it is a data point I suppose. Smith is never shy about voicing his opinion, and it may carry some weight with the Panthers organization, but probably not. His tweet is funny and just another reminder of how totally crazy the last play was.

We discuss whether an NFL team will hire 49ers defensive coordinator Demeco Ryans and which opening fits him best.

The San Francisco 49ers have had a great season and are one of the favorites for the Super Bowl. Defensive coordinator Demeco Ryans has played a major role in that as they have the best defense in the NFL. It has been that way since he took over in 2021. Below we’ll take a look at whether or not he will get a chance as a head coach next season.

Who is 49ers defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans

Ryans was a second round pick from Alabama in the 2006 NFL Draft. He played in the NFL for 10 seasons and had a great career. He won Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2006, was a First Team All-Pro in 2007, and made the Pro Bowl in 2007 and 2009. A little over a year after retiring, Ryans was hired by the 49ers as the defensive quality control coach. The next year after that, they promoted him to inside linebackers coach.

The following season, after Robert Sales took the head coaching job with the Jets, Ryans was promoted to defensive coordinator for the 49ers. After 2021, he landed a head coaching interview with the Minnesota Vikings, but declined a second interview choosing to stay with the 49ers. His defense has been stellar once again this season and their success could play a big role in him getting a head coaching job this offseason.

Why would he make a good head coach?

Everything Ryans has shown as a defensive coordinator looks like he will be a successful NFL head coach. While his defense has had talent, he has gotten everything out of his players. He’s had great schemes and hasn’t struggled with adjustments. His players seem to enjoy being around him and he’s always energized on the sideline. He’d be great taking over in a situation where they want to change the culture.

I would expect him to be the top option this offseason and many teams looking for a coach to do whatever they can to add him as their head coach. Many weren't expecting him to have as much success as Saleh did, but he did a great job filling his shoes. Saleh has had success in New York, and I would expect Ryans to have a bit of the same.

Which teams are interviewing him?

Denver Broncos

Update 1/12- Ryans will officially interview with the Broncos in Los Angeles next Tuesday. This will come two days after the 49ers’ Wild Card round matchup against the Seahawks and his ability to potentially hit the ground running with the job obviously hinges on how far the Niners make it un the postseason.

Ryans’ ability to maintain one of the best defenses in the league despite a slew of injuries makes him a great candidate for the Broncos. With the likes of Patrick Mahomes, Justin Herbert, and Davante Adams in the AFC West, going with a defensive guy would be a wise move. The only question is the offensive coordinator and how they would help mitigate the decline of quarterback Russell Wilson.

The Broncos have requested permission to interview Ryans as one of their top candidates. Considering how successful the 49ers pass rush has been under Ryans’ leadership, pairing him with an elite defender like Bradley Chubb would be a wise move.

Houston Texans

The Texans have also requested permission to interview Ryans and it would be a homecoming for Ryans as earned All-Pro status with the franchise in 2007. However, it has been reported that Ryans will not pursue the job given the dysfunction of the franchise and the fact that he once filed a lawsuit against them.

Carolina Panthers

The Panthers finished the season strong, but need to build talent on both sides of the ball. They have the ninth overall pick in the draft and nobody would be surprised if they drafted a quarterback. Ryans would want to bring in a strong OC option if he was hired, but the Panthers’ issues on both sides of the ball mean going for a defensive- vs. offensive-minded head coach shouldn’t make a huge difference.

Arizona Cardinals

The 49ers confirmed Ryans received an interview request from the Cardinals. Arizona had a disaster of a season and a massive regression on offense. Ryans would help upgrade their defense and one of Arizona’s most important questions would likely be who Ryans would look to bring in as offensive coordinator and QB coach for working with Kyler Murray.

Indianapolis Colts

The Colts submitted a request to interview Ryans on Monday, January 16. Ryans continues to employ a stout defensive front as the 49ers make their way through the NFC playoffs. He has been a popular choice for interviews, and the Colts' defense and the overall team could benefit from his creativity and play calling. He would likely be paired with a new quarterback to enter into a new era in Indy.

The Pats are trying to keep their inside linebackers coach in Foxborough, MA, longterm.

New England Patriots inside linebackers coach Jerod Mayo is a rising head coaching commodity in the NFL and the franchise is doing what it can to keep him in Foxborough, MA.

The Patriots announced on Thursday that they are in negotiations to keep Mayo on staff long term. This came just hours after the news that the Carolina Panthers had requested permission to fill their open head coaching vacancy. The team also announced that it will begin interviewing offensive coordinator candidates next week.

The former All-Pro linebacker for the organization has played a huge role in the Patriots maintaining a strong defense for the past few seasons, which has kept them as a playoff contender in the post-Tom Brady era. This year, the unit created tons of havoc with 30 turnovers and a league-high seven defensive touchdowns. Mayo been heavily involved in the play-calling process on defense, a responsibility he had during his playing days with the organization. It’s not a surprise that the organization wants to keep him around.

It’s a bit out of the ordinary for an organization to publicly announce that it is in negotiations with a sitting assistant coach. One could perhaps speculate the Patriots are officially enacting a succession plan for head coach Bill Belichick’s retirement in the future.

We discuss whether an NFL team will hire former head coach Jim Caldwell, and which opening fits him best.

As coaching vacancies open up across the league, we take a look at potential options to fill the position to turn struggling teams around. Former Detroit Lions and Indianapolis Colts head coach Jim Caldwell’s name has been thrown around, and he’s even landed a few interviews.

Who is Jim Caldwell?

Caldwell has been a coach on two Super Bowl-winning teams who began his tenure in the NFL in 2001. Previously, he had played at Iowa in the 1970s and made his way around the NCAA in various assistant and position coaching roles before coming on as the head coach of Wake Forest, where he remained from 1993 to 2000.

He then joined the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as a quarterbacks coach for a year under Tony Dungy, and followed Dungy to the Colts the next season, where they won a Super Bowl in 2006. Caldwell was promoted to the head coaching position in 2009 and brought the Colts all the way to the Super Bowl, though they lost to the Saints in the final.

Fired from Indianapolis after a disastrous third season, Caldwell was quickly hired and promoted to offensive coordinator at the Baltimore Ravens. As OC, he helped lead Baltimore to a Super Bowl win. Between 2014 and 2017, he was the head coach of the Detroit Lions, and went 36–28. He had a short stint with the Dolphins in 2019.

Why would he make a good head coach?

It’s been a few years since Caldwell was in the league, but his track record as an offensive coordinator and as a head coach speak for themselves. He led the Colts to a Super Bowl in his first year as a head coach, and he made the playoffs in four of his seven years as a head coach. He’s a highly experienced offensive mind, and he would be a safe option for any team looking to start turning things around.

Which teams are interviewing him?

Carolina Panthers

The Panthers have some solid tools at their disposal and will likely draft a quarterback in the first round of the 2023 draft. This could be a similar situation to his time with the Lions after Jim Schwartz left, when he turned them quickly around to a winning season.

Denver Broncos

Caldwell could potentially be the answer to the Broncos’ challenges. His experience as a QBs coach would be valuable to a team struggling to click with their quarterback. The Broncos have spent quite a bit of money on Russell Wilson and will be looking for an immediate return on their investment, and Caldwell is a safe and proven bet there.

We discuss whether an NFL team will hire Giants offensive coordinator Mike Kafka and which opening fits him best.

The New York Giants got back to the playoffs for the first time since 2016 behind a stout defense and strong running game. The ground game was largely powered by running back Saquon Barkley, but quarterback Daniel Jones also showed off his mobility and rushed for 708 yards and seven touchdowns. Giants offensive coordinator Mike Kafka was instrumental in the evolution and development of Jones and should draw interest as a head-coach candidate this offseason.

Who is New York Giants offensive coordinator Mike Kafka?

Kafka, a college quarterback at Northwestern, struggled to make much noise for three seasons before delivering a solid senior season with 3,430 yards and 16 touchdowns. He also rushed for eight scores. After his college career, Kafka bounced around the league for a bit as a backup quarterback and practice squad player. He joined Northwestern’s coaching staff as a graduate assistant and eventually worked his way up in the NFL ranks with the Kansas City Chiefs. This was his lone season as the Giants' offensive coordinator.

Why would he make a good head coach?

Any experience around the Chiefs seems to be good, especially when it is on the offensive side of the ball. Kafka has seen Andy Reid operate with the best quarterback in the game, and he’s definitely been able to elevate Jones without some of the weapons quarterbacks usually need to do well. Whether he has the overall vision for a football team and organization remains to be seen, but he’s got the offensive IQ to successfully groom quarterbacks. That’s the most important position in the game, and sometimes anyone who can get the most out of the quarterback can get past other shortcomings.

Which teams are interviewing him?

Houston Texans

This is not an ideal situation for a first-time head coach, with the Texans looking for their third head coach in as many years. The upside here is Kafka could get an opportunity to help hand-pick his quarterback given the Texans problems at the position. The interview could be as much him interviewing the organization given their numerous problems.

Carolina Panthers

Similar to the Texans, the Panthers will be looking for a quarterback this offseason and have a high draft pick with which to do so. Panthers owner David Tepper backed up the Brink’s Truck for Matt Rhule and it will be interesting to see how he looks to approach his second run through the hiring process. Carolina has more talent than Houston, providing a chance at a quicker turnaround.

The Panthers will interview their interim head coach after an impressive close to the season.

The Carolina Panthers have begun their search for a new head coach, and one of the first interviews will be in-house. Interim head coach Steve Wilks will interview for the job on Tuesday, per Joe Person.

Wilks took over as interim head coach after owner David Tepper fired Matt Rhule following a 1-4 start to the season. The Panthers went 6-6 after Wilks took over and had a very real shot at the AFC South title heading into Week 17. They lost to the Bucs, but it was an impressive run for a team that had dealt away Christian McCaffrey and Robbie Anderson in what was looking like the start of a rebuilding process.

Jim Harbaugh is reportedly interested in the job as well, and there will be other candidates. And yet, it makes sense to turn the permanent job over to Wilks. He struggled in his first head coach job, with his Arizona Cardinals team going 3-13 before he was fired. He did not get an extended opportunity, but this time around we saw a team that played some inspired football after he took over. The NFL is hardly fair, but if the league wants to pretend it’s a meritocracy, Wilks has earned the job.

We discuss the best candidates to get a new head coaching job in 2023.

Each offseason, there are head coaching opportunities that open up around the NFL. This season, we have already seen Matt Rhule and Frank Reich lose their jobs, and there are likely more firings coming. With Steve Wilks and Jeff Saturday serving as interim head coaches, there are at least two jobs that will likely hold a head coaching search ahead of the 2023 season. Here is an overview of some of the top candidates that should be getting interviews for head coaching gigs.

Best Options

Sean Payton

It didn’t take long for Sean Payton to want to come out of retirement and get back to coaching. He has said that he prefers to coach in New Orleans or Los Angeles, but if a team needs a new coach, Payton is likely at the top of the list. There are two problems with Payton that a prospective team has to figure out. The first is that he is likely going to require the most money to hire, and some analysts are thinking it could take the largest coaching contract in history to make it happen. The second is that the New Orleans Saints still have the rights to Payton, and it is expected that if he goes to coach for another team, they will need to trade a first-round pick to New Orleans to “acquire” Payton.

Eric Bieniemy

There is usually one reason or another that teams are giving for not hiring Bienemy. Even if he isn’t the primary play caller for the Kansas City Chiefs, he is still the offensive coordinator that has been in charge of an offensive unit that apparently didn’t get worse from losing Tyreek Hill. In the past, if offensive coordinators have shown the continued success that Bienemy has, they likely get shots at being a head coach. Sure, there are times we see Patrick Mahomes arguing with him on the sideline, but that happens with everyone, and it doesn’t take away from the team’s success. He will certainly receive more interviews this offseason, but will he finally get his deserved shot?

Time to See What They Can Do

Kellen Moore

Moore snagged an interview last season with nearly every team that had a coaching opening. While he didn’t get any of the jobs, he has another year of experience under his belt as the Dallas Cowboys’ offensive coordinator. Moore helped the offense not miss a beat when quarterback Dak Prescott suffered an injury, meaning that Cooper Rush had to take over. It seems like only a matter of time before he gets his shot, so why not see what he can do?

DeMeco Ryans

Ryans has been the brainchild behind the San Francisco 49ers' dominant defense for the last few years. When former DC Robert Saleh was hired as the new head coach for the New York Jets, Ryans was promoted and hasn’t looked back. He may not get hired this cycle, but he is one of the several young coaching candidates that have already proven themselves and have a bright future.

Ken Dorsey

Dorsey is the Buffalo Bills current offensive coordinator. He joined the team in 2019 as their quarterbacks coach and then got promoted to passing game coordinator in 2021. This is his first year as OC, which could be a knock on him, but the fact is that he has worked with Josh Allen for the last four seasons, a.k.a. when Allen took a noticeable step froward in his game play. Dorsey is going to have some risk associated with him whenever he does get a head coaching gig, but his ability to build a relationship with his quarterback should serve him well.

Second Chances

Frank Reich

Reich got a bad rap this season for the Colts. It seemed like Indy was a quarterback away from competing deep into the postseason, and that wasn’t the case. The QB they went with was Matt Ryan and he has now been benched multiple times. With injuries and a worse offensive line than expected, Reich was the casualty from a slow start to the season. In his five years with the team he managed a 40-33-1 record with two postseason appearances. He should get another shot.

Dan Quinn

Speaking of second chances, the Cowboys could be losing both of their coordinators this cycle. Quinn was last the head coach for the Atlanta Falcons from 2015-2020. He totaled a 43-42 record with a division title and a loss in Super Bowl LI to the New England Patriots. Quinn nearly was hired as a head coach last year after only one season as the Cowboys OC. With another year under his belt and another solid defensive unit, Quinn is likely to be a head coach next year.

Jim Harbaugh

I mean good luck getting him away from Michigan, but Harbaugh has been getting some interest from teams in the NFL. He interviewed for some jobs in the 2021 offseason, but came out of them saying he was closing the door on the NFL. While he is focusing on building the program at Michigan, it is hard to think that the door to the NFL is every fully closed for him.

Brian Flores

Flores has spent this season under the radar. He filed a class action lawsuit against the NFL claiming racial discrimination, but has been working as the Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker coach and senior defensive assistant. Flores coached the Miami Dolphins from 2019 to 2021. He amassed a 24-25 record, and helped Miami finish in second place in the AFC East, narrowly missing out on the playoffs in 2020. Put Flores in charge of a team with an established offense, and watch his defensive mind go to work.

Let’s Not But Say We Did

Hue Jackson

Jackson has been reported as saying that he wants another head coaching gig in the NFL. He has been a head coach twice in the NFL. First, he coached the then-Oakland Raiders to an 8-8 record in 2011. He then coached the Cleveland Browns from 2016-2018 and had a 3-36-1 record. Since then, he coached Grambling State to a 3-8 record in 2022. His tenure in Cleveland will likely keep him away from a head coaching gig this year as it likely should.

Josh McCown

McCown had his name floated around when the Houston Texans were looking for a head coach last year. They ended up going with Lovie Smith and that has turned into a 2-12-1 record. McCown played all over the league during his career, but hasn’t had a coaching position yet. Vaulting him all the way up to a head coaching gig is a mistake if a team decides to make it. I’m not saying that McCown doesn’t have what it takes to be an NFL head coach, it just sets a bad precedent to have him take over a team with no prior coaching experience other than being a perennial backup.
