The QB is progressing in his recovery from a foot injury. We break down whether or not he has a shot to return this postseason.

San Francisco 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo has been sidelined for most of the second half of the 2023 season due to a foot injury. He hasn’t played since Dec. 4 but ESPN’s Adam Schefter is reporting some good news as the Niners head into the Divisional Round against the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday. We’re going to take a look at the report and update you on Jimmy G’s status for the postseason.

Jimmy Garoppolo injury updates

Sunday, January 29 update — Garoppolo won’t be active for the team’s NFC Championship matchup with the Eagles, per Ian Rapoport. However, if they advance Rapoport is reporting he is “finally at a point where practicing is possible.” He won’t start ahead of a healthy Brock Purdy if the 49ers advance to the Super Bowl, but he could be available as a backup.

Monday, January 23 update — The 49ers beat the Cowboys in the Divisional Round and will travel to face the Eagles in the NFC Championship Game. Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo was inactive once again and head coach Kyle Shanahan said he will get another x-ray on his foot on Tuesday, per Cam Inman. Shanahan said he would be “very surprised” if Garoppolo could be activated for the Eagles game, but there’s some speculation that he could be available to back up Brock Purdy if the 49ers advance to the Super Bowl.

Saturday, January 21 update — According to head coach Kyle Shanahan, there’s an “outside chance” that Jimmy G can return for the NFC Championship game if the 49ers advance past the Cowboys on Sunday.

The more likely scenario is that Garoppolo can return for the Super Bowl if the Niners make it that far. Seeing as Brock Purdy has filled in nicely, it would be a pretty tough call for Shanahan to turn to Jimmy G after Purdy got you that far. It would be a nice insurance policy in case Purdy does struggle down the stretch and Garoppolo is healthy.

Purdy’s first test will be against the Cowboys after a convincing win over the Seattle Seahawks in the Wild Card round. He threw for 332 yards and three TDs against Seattle. Dallas has a much better defense and pass rush, which should be able to pressure Purdy. We’ll see if the Niners can get by the Cowboys and how Purdy performs. If Purdy struggles, but the San Fran D holds up, we could see Jimmy G down the road.

That was certainly a choice the Cowboys made while needing 70+ yards to tie the game.

So football alignment rules are weird, but here’s the gist: You’ve got to have seven players on the line of scrimmage when the ball is snapped, and five guys with a number between 50-79 on the field to start every play. Those five are “ineligible,” which means they can’t catch a forward pass, but they can run the ball or carry it after someone else on the team catches a pass. They just can’t be the original receiver.

So we kind of see what Mike McCarthy was going for with five seconds remaining in the Dallas Cowboys-San Francisco 49ers NFC Divisional Playoff game on Sunday evening. But that doesn’t mean it was a good idea!

If you’re familiar with the Emory & Henry formation Steve Spurrier made famous, it appears to be a version of that where the linemen are split out wide to confuse the defense and give multiple options. But this is certainly one way to end your season!

Our best guess is someone catches a ball underneath, laterals to Elliott, and then one of the best RB’s in the NFL follows a mass-humanity parade behind as many teammates as he can trail blocking for him downfield.

But once San Francisco sees this formation, they call timeout to assess how to defend it. And it appears they wisely chose “blow up Zeke Elliott ASAP, then kill the man with the ball.”

Someone will have to ask McCarthy what exactly he was going for here. And there are no good options to get more than 70 yards in one play when the defense only has to keep that exact thing from happening.

The Dallas Cowboys are in Santa Clara facing the San Francisco 49ers and they have a headache to deal with that could get bigger in a hurry. Kicker Brett Maher struggled last week with four straight extra point misses and word out of Levi’s Stadium is things have not been getting any better.

Things have settled down for Maher, but until he comes out for his first kick attempt, Cowboys fans are going to be slightly nervous. Dallas signed Tristan Vizcaino to the practice squad earlier this week but elected to not activate him for Sunday’s game against the 49ers. That leaves Maher operating without a safety net.
We go over who would replace the 49ers’ starting QB if he’s injured.

You would be hard-pressed not to have heard of San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy. A former last pick in the NFL Draft, Purdy has been the third starting quarterback for San Francisco this season. He finds himself in the Divisional round, continuing to make news headlines with his impromptu season. With San Francisco having to go so far down their depth chart with Purdy, who is serving as his backup?

Purdy is backed up by NFL journeyman Josh Johnson. He has been in the league in some capacity since 2008. Johnson has played for or been a practice squad member of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Cleveland Browns, Cincinnati Bengals, New York Jets, Indianapolis Colts, Buffalo Bills, Baltimore Ravens, New York Giants, Houston Texans, Las Vegas Raiders, Washington Commanders, Detroit Lions, and Denver Broncos.

Throughout his illustrious career, Johnson has played in a total of 39 games. He has completed 58% of his career passes for 2,280 yards with 13 touchdowns and 16 interceptions. Johnson has never been a dual-threat guy and only has 78 career rushing attempts for 425 yards and a touchdown.

Johnson played his college ball at San Diego. He finished with 9,699 passing yards with 113 touchdowns and 15 interceptions. Johnson ran plenty in college and added 1,864 career yards on the ground with 19 touchdowns. He was drafted in the fifth round of the 2008 NFL Draft.

Jimmy Garoppolo is on the team’s 53-man roster but is inactive while recovering from a foot injury. There is speculation he could be available if the team advances to the NFC Championship Game, but it’s not set in stone.

We don’t have the official inactives report yet as it is released an hour and a half before kickoff, but we know which players are definitely not playing. CB Ambry Thomas (ankle) and QB Jimmy Garoppolo (foot) have both been ruled out for Sunday’s game against the Cowboys. We will get the full list of inactives around 5 p.m. ET, but for now, here is what we know about players in question.

The 49ers will be without Ambry Thomas and Jimmy Garoppolo, but nobody else has been ruled out ahead of the action. DL Samson Ebukam (ankle), WR Jauan Jennings (ankle), and DL Javon Kinlaw (knee) were limited in practice this week, but are expected to play.

The Cowboys will be without T Jason Peters, who has been ruled out with a hip injury. Safety Jayron Kearse is listed as questionable with a knee injury and was limited in practice, but is expected to be available for Sunday evening’s game.
