The co-main event of UFC on ESPN 9 this Saturday is a classic gatekeeper vs. prospect matchup as Ovince Saint Preux faces Alonzo Menifield live on ESPN+ from Las Vegas.
This bout was supposed to happen two weeks ago but Saint Preux tested positive for Covid-19, and it gives this UFC card quite the bout not on the main card.
Saint Preux has earned a Performance of The Night bonus in his last three UFC victories. The light heavyweight stalwart is 24-14 in his career, with a UFC mark of 12-9. He has 11 KO’s and eight submissions in his career, and fought Jon Jones for a UFC Championship in 2016.
He lands just 2.60 significant strikes per minute and 1.27 takedowns per fight, and his last outing was a split decision loss to Ben Rothwell in Jacksonville during the UFC’s return to action post-Covid-19 on May 13th.
Menifield at 9-1 and 2-1 in the UFC is still an up-and-comer, though he lost his last bout against Devin Clark via unanimous decision on June 6th for his first loss. It was the first fight of his career to reach a third round, and he was gassed at the end.
All nine of the wins for the 32-year-old from Dallas, Texas are via stoppage, eight of them by knockout. After dominating his first two UFC opponents with first-round KO’s, Clark landed more significant strikes 79-39.

This is as good a co-main event as you’ll see, but it’s a gatekeeper vs. prospect. Don’t expect this to go very long, and that means Menifield is likely the play here. At below average value, his KO ability is as elite as any fighter on the roster. Play him.
